Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick warned during a recent interview on Fox News that sending federal agents to confront the Texas National Guard on the Mexican border would be a major error on the part of President Joe Biden.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has demanded border access, but Texas Governor Gregg Abbott refuses to back down. A recent Supreme Court ruling allows federal agents to dismantle a razor wire fence erected by Texas along Eagle Pass, which is a common entry point for illegal immigrants.
Abbott, who installed the fence in 2021, vowed to defy the ruling, emphasizing his duty to protect constituents amid perceived federal immigration law enforcement failures. (Related: BORDER DEFENSE: America protects US-Mexico border with barbed wire and verbal warnings.)
The governor said his state is operating within its constitutional right to protect citizens and the country.
Patrick cautioned against the Biden administration confronting law enforcement or the National Guard, stating it would be a significant mistake.
He stressed that Texas is fulfilling the job desired by the American people and accused Democrats of being willing to challenge a state exercising its constitutional right to border protection.
In response to a letter from the DHS, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has been instructed to remove razor wire and grant unrestricted access to agents along Shelby Park.
The Texas National Guard has blockaded this 2.5-mile stretch providing access to the border.
Patrick accused the administration of trying to provoke a confrontation, emphasizing Texas' commitment to protecting the border and American lives.
Border Patrol encountered over 300,000 illegal immigrants in December, marking an all-time high for a single month. Since Biden assumed office in 2021, over 7.5 million people have entered the U.S. illegally, surpassing the population of Arizona.
Republicans back Abbott

The conflict between Abbott and the Biden administration over the installation of razor wire along the Texas-Mexico border has garnered increased support from a growing number of Republicans.
In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government has the authority to remove the razor wire installed by the Texas National Guard as part of Operation Lone Star – an anti-immigration initiative by Abbott.
Abbott, undeterred by the court ruling, maintains a defiant stance. He contends that the state's authority supersedes any federal statutes to the contrary and continues to share updates, emphasizing the Texas National Guard's commitment to "hold the line."
Several prominent Republican governors, including Ron DeSantis of Florida, Glenn Youngkin of Virginia, Brian Kemp of Georgia and Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma, have expressed public support for Abbott's adversarial position.
Congressional Republicans, such as House Speaker Mike Johnson, Texas Representative Chip Roy and Louisiana Representative Clay Higgins, have also endorsed Abbott's defiance.
Recent video footage shows the Texas National Guard installing additional razor wire, underscoring Abbott's commitment to maintaining a strong border presence.
Responding to Abbott's continued actions, Representative Joaquin Castro, a Democrat from Texas, has urged the Biden administration to establish sole control of the Texas National Guard if non-compliance with the court's ruling is identified.
The situation is escalating, with Abbott's hostility toward the federal government finding resonance among Republicans and conservative extremists.
Calls for "civil war" and "secession" have emerged online, raising concerns about the potential for violence.
The volatile situation underscores the complex and contentious nature of immigration policies and their enforcement at the state and federal levels.
