Schumer's Marketing Lesson for 'Comprehensive Reform'

Schumer's Marketing Lesson for "Comprehensive Reform"

By Jerry Kammer, June 25, 2009

A powerful Senate advocate of "comprehensive immigration reform" legislation Wednesday offered some marketing advice to those who want to help him get the bill passed: Call illegal immigration by its name.

"When we use phrases like 'undocumented workers,' we convey a message to the American people that their government is not serious about combating illegal immigration, which the American people overwhelmingly opposed," said Sen. Charles Schumer, chairman of the Judiciary immigration subcommittee. "If you don’t think it’s illegal you’re not going to say it. I think it is illegal and wrong and we have to change it."

Speaking at the Migration Policy Institute’s Sixth Annual Immigration Policy Conference at the Georgetown Law School in Washington. the New York Democrat said Congress will not be able to pass the legislation "until the American people are convinced that we will stop future flows of illegal immigration.

Schumer also provided an outline of what he called "seven principles" to form the framework of a bill that could receive broad congressional support. He made it clear his approach to changing illegal immigration consists largely in directing it to vastly expanded channels of legal immigration.

This description of Schumer's seven principles is taken verbatim from his speech:

Illegal immigration is wrong. A primary goal of comprehensive immigration reform must be to dramatically curtail future illegal immigration.

Operational control of our borders, through significant additional increases in infrastructure, technology and border personnel must be achieved within a year of enactment.

A biometric-based employment verification system with tough enforcement and auditing is necessary to significantly diminish the job magnet that attracts illegal aliens to the United States and to provide certainty and simplicity for employers.

All illegal aliens present in the United States on the date of enactment of our bill must quickly register their presence with the United States government and submit to a rigorous process of converting to legal status and earning the path to citizenship, or face imminent deportation.

Family immigration is a cornerstone value of our immigration system. By dramatically reducing illegal immigration, we we can create more room for family immigration and employer-based immigration.

We must encourage the world’s best and brightest individuals to come to the United States and create the new technologies and businesses that will employ countless American workers. But we must discourage businesses from using our immigration laws as a means to obtain temporary and less expensive foreign labor to replace capable American workers.

We must create a system that converts the current flow of primarily low skill illegal immigrants into the United States into a more manageable and controlled flow of legal immigrants who can be absorbed by our economy.

Schumer insists that the country's borders have been secured. So I send him official news releases from ICE and CBP that show THAT THEY ARE NOT!! Of course with an arrogant prig like Schumer who knows how long it will take before he understands.

Ah, I knew there had to be a catch. In other words, we will hurry and give them all legal status the minute the bill is passed. I don't think so, Schumer. Go sell your crooked marketing somewhere else.

This marketing strategy will backfire on Schumer. People will ask, if he believes illegal immigration is wrong, then why does he want to reward them with legalization. After all, making them legal will give them access to gobernment services.

Didn't the last amnesty exclude illegals that had only been here for a year or two? Hmmm.......now it seems they want to open the flood gates! How many hopefuls are going to hear this and come running, swimming, jumping, and climbing for their free citizenship?

Sounds like the same old story, Chuckie. You're not serious about border security, you're just trying to convince us that the border will be secured when in essence, all you are doing is throwing a buck or two at the border. How about a manned double-layered fence fence eqipped night vision technology and anything else that would enable our good Border Patrol personel do their job? Or do you really want this to work? I don't trust you, Chuckie, just last month, you tried to convince us that the border was already secured. You'd sell your mother for a vote, wouldn't you! Quit thinking about pandering and coodling hispanics and start doing what is right in the interests of the American citizens NOW! Yep, don't like the way you think. Your too damn concerned about keeping your job rather than doing what is right.

What a lying ratbastard! NYC and NYS became 'sanctuaries' in 88! Just 2 years after the 'One and Only Amnesty'. I can't think of ONE major politician in NYS or from NYC that has ever taken a stand against Illegal Aliens. NOT ONE!

Kirsten Gillibrand perfectly exemplifies what goes on here. As a minor rep she could believe what she wanted (what I admired) but to become a major player she was forced to flip.

A word of advice to all here: Never trust a politician from NY! They don't even represent New Yorkers, they have all been put in place by special interests.

Maybe we should adopt a counter marketing strategy that targets the cutting edge sensibility of the uber trendy liberal crowd, e.g. Amnesty is so 2007. All we would need to do is brainwash one influential Democrat, and the concept would catch on like wildfire.

I actually believe this is the level of shallowness that exists among many.

Now thats really scarey. Does Schumer really think illegal aliens CARE if they face IMMINENT DEPORTATION because thats what they have been facing all along!

NO "PATHWAYS TO CITIZENSHIP!" Enforce our laws and deport the lawbreakers NOW.
