WASHINGTON, Feb 22 (Reuters) - A modest job-creation bill advanced in the U.S. Senate on Monday as the chamber's newest Republican bucked his party and sided with Democrats on a $15 billion package of tax cuts and highway spending.

Republican Scott Brown joined four other Republicans, 55 Democrats and two independents to overcome a procedural hurdle that sets up a final vote later this week.

Brown was widely hailed as a conservative hero after his surprise victory in Massachusetts last month gave Republicans enough seats to block most Democratic legislation.

His election prompted President Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats to call for increased bipartisanship, and an earlier version of the bill was written with Republican input.

But key Republicans withdrew their support after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid scaled it back.

Brown said the bill was not perfect but would help put people back to work.

"I hope my vote today is a strong step toward restoring bipartisanship in Washington," he said in a statement.

The bill includes a tax credit for businesses that hire unemployed workers, subsidies for state and local construction bonds and $19.5 billion to shore up a highway-construction fund.

Much of the cost is offset by a crackdown on offshore tax shelters.

Oh you're most welcome, TopSecret10. Keeping up with these stupid politicians and all their wicked ploys to bankrupt our nation is more than any of us can do alone. That's one of the reasons ALIPAC is such a GREAT TEAM!

Scott Brown Was Harry Reid's First Yes Vote on Jobs Bill

We are learning more about Scott Brown’s vote yesterday. Apparently, Brown was Harry Reid’s first yes vote yesterday for stimulus II, the jobs bill Obama demanded. After casting his vote, Brown left the halls of the Senate quickly in hopes of not facing the Republicans that supported him during his battle against Martha Coakley. He then went and faced his new friends in the media.

Yes, according to reports in the Senate yesterday, this is how it went down according to Dana Milbank. Now here is the scariest part of this. Scott Brown says he voted for the bill because it’s the first step to creating jobs. Wait a minute Mr. Brown, wasn’t the original $787 billion stimulus bill the first step to create jobs. It didn’t work, and now you are proving to be quite the idiot throwing more taxpayer dollars in hopes the Senate creates jobs with even more money. Geez, Mr. Brown, have you lost your frickin’ mind that quickly after moving to Washington.

Oh, I am not surprised though Mr. Brown. Now your only job is to get reelected, you are going to pander to the unions with these job bills that are going to do little but provide more work for service union employees. My gosh, you might as well put a D behind your name Mr. Brown. You have already been suckered into believing the government can create jobs, and I thought your resume was that of a small business man who knew what it take to create jobs. Geez, we were duped. It’s no wonder they are calling you Scott Coakley today.
