Dems Showcase College Kids Of Undocumented Immigrants
By Martin Kady II
Oct 23, 2007
(The Politico) Democrats have not been shy about showcasing children during the children's health care debate, so they've decided to highlight the stories of three college-age kids of illegal immigrants in their push to pass an immigration measure.
Democratic leaders are pushing the DREAM Act, which would allow a limited number of children of illegial immigrants to become permanent residents, receive college aid and serve in the military, and have promised a procedural vote in the Senate tomorrow.
In an effort to humanize the issue of what happens to children of immigrants who came to the country illegally, Democrats plan to introduce Tam Tran, a 24-year old Vietnamese graduate student, Marie Gonzalez, a 21-year old Costa Rican college student, and Manuel Bartsch, a college sophomore from Germany. All three young adults, who will be introduced at an afternoon press briefing, have been in the United States for years, but their parents entered the country illegally.

Tancredo: Arrest the immigrant students at press conference
Democrats knew they were embracing the touchy subject of immigration when they planned an afternoon press conference with three college students whose parents came to the United States illegally .
But they were stunned when Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.), a presidential candidate who has made a name for himself as a hard-liner on immigration, called for the three students - all of whom have been in the United States for over a decade - to be arrested.
The Democrats are promoting legislation known as the Dream Act, which would give permanent residency status to certain children of illegal aliens, but only if they came to the country before age 16 and had graduated from high school. Supporters say the measure, which will see a vote tomorrow in the Senate, is very narrowly tailored.
Tancredo has obviously seen a political opening with the situation.
"I call on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency to detain any illegal aliens at this press conference," said Tancredo, who claims to have alerted federal authorities about the well publicized press confrence. "Just because these illegal aliens are being used for political gain doesn’t mean they get immunity from the law. If we can’t enforce our laws inside the building where American laws are made, where can we enforce them?â€

Tancredo issued a news release saying he had called federal immigration officials to warn them that illegal immigrants might show up at Durbin's meeting promoting the DREAM Act.
That bill would create a path to legality for illegal immigrants, who plan to attend college or join the military and who came to the United States with their families before they turned 16.
"Just because these illegal aliens are being used for political gain doesn't mean they get immunity from the law," Tancredo said.
Even if immigration officials had showed up, the three immigrant children at his meeting have been allowed to stay in the country temporarily by the Homeland Security Department, Durbin said.
This means that Tancredo did not really do his homework about who these three young people are. Tam Tran actually cannot be deported because Germany does not offer birthright citizenship (her parents are from an Asian country, also which refuses to take Tam in). I think Tancredo should have first looked into the nature of these cases before calling ICE on them. After all our own Homeland Security has given them the right to stay in the country!
