Donald Trump has reportedly postponed a planned speech on immigration this week amid questions over whether he no longer stands by one of the core proposals of his candidacy.

The Republican nominee was due in Colorado to deliver a speech in Denver on Thursday as part of a weeklong focus on immigration as well as to attend a $25,000-per-couple fundraiser in Aspen the same day.

Lydia Blaha, a spokeswoman for the campaign in Colorado, confirmed Monday to The Denver Post that the event would not take place as scheduled, and the campaign emailed supporters explaining that "the speech he was planning to give is still being modified."

He also reportedly cancelled a rally scheduled for Friday in Las Vegas.

The cancellations come as the Trump campaign pushes back on reports he was "flip-flopping" on his plan to deport the more than 11 million immigrants in the U.S. illegally. Trump first announced his support of mass deportation last August, and along with his proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border it became the centerpiece of his campaign and a major source of his support.

At a meeting with Hispanic leaders over the weekend, Trump reportedly suggested his plan for a deportation force was potentially up for reconsideration, raising their hopes he planned to find a solution "that respects border security but deals with this in a humane and efficient manner," immigration lawyer Jacob Monty told Buzzfeed News after the Saturday meeting.
And Univision reported the planned Thursday speech would introduce a new immigration proposal that would include a path to legalization for immigrants without proper documentation.

Newly installed campaign manager Kellyanne Conway on Sunday suggested some wiggle room in Trump's plan, saying it was "to be determined" if he would still support the creation of a "deportation force."

"What he supports is to make sure that we enforce the law, that we are respectful of those Americans who are looking for well-paying jobs, and that we are fair and humane for those who live among us in this country," Conway said.

Conway's comments set off a firestorm of speculation that Trump was shifting to a more general election-friendly message. But on Monday, Trump insisted he had no intention of changing his stance.

"I'm not flip-flopping," Trump told Fox News. "We want to come up with a really fair but firm answer."

But as the campaign confirmed the postponement of Thursday's event, other campaign representatives who attended Saturday's meeting were less clear.

Helen Aguirre Ferre, the Republican National Committee's director of Hispanic communications, on Monday afternoon declined to answer whether Trump was changing his tune.

"He never said the word 'deportation' and he never said the word 'legalization,'" Ferre told MSNBC on Monday. "He was there to listen and learn. He didn't give any indication one way or another as to what he would be doing."

"They're working on their policy at this point in time, it has to be very strong and very firm, and has to be fair or humane," she added.

And on Monday, Conway said the plan to deport 11 million people was never set in stone.

"Even Sen. Jeff Sessions [R-Ala.], who was one of the first to endorse Donald Trump and is known for the immigration issue, he doesn't deport 11 million people in his plan," Conway said on CNBC on Monday. "In other words, what Donald Trump says is we need a fair and effective way to deal with the 11 million here who are here who live among us, at the same time protecting American jobs and American workers and also securing our borders obviously. But what he's saying is immigration is a very complex issue with a very complex solution."

But even as Trump has evolved on his other headline immigration plan – at first calling for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S. to now saying he supports barring travel from terrorism-stricken countries – he has remained consistent about his support for mass deportation since last August.

Donald Trump to Delay Immigration Policy Speech Amid Criticism of Flip-Flopping

Donald Trump is trying to balance his previous stance with gaining new followers.

By Allen McDuffee (Patch Staff) - August 22, 2016 5:49 pm ET

Donald Trump is expected to delay a highly anticipated speech on immigration that was set for later this week following days of confusion about where the Republican presidential nominee stands on the issue — one of the major pillars of his campaign that attracted many supporters.
Trump, who is scheduled to attend a fundraiser on Thursday in Colorado where he was supposed to deliver a major speech on immigration, said on Monday that he wants a plan that is "really fair" to address the millions of undocumented immigrants now in the U.S. but that the speech he was "planning on giving is still being modified."

What Trump may see as fine-tuning, others are seeing as a flip-flop on his early campaign stance where he called for the mass deportation of 11 million undocumented immigrants by a special force in the United States.

Trump, however, denied on Fox News early Monday that he was "flip-flopping" on his immigration proposals following a meeting with Hispanic leaders.

"We want to come up with a really fair but firm answer. It has to be very firm," he said. "But we want to come up with something fair."

On Sunday, new Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway declined to clarify whether or not the New York businessman backs his earlier stated plan.

"What he supports is to make sure that we enforce the law, that we are respectful of those Americans who are looking for well-paying jobs, and that we are fair and humane for those who live among us in this country," Conway said on CNN.

When pressed in the interview as to whether or not a deportation force was still on the table as a potential measure, Conway deflected: "To be determined."

During the primary season, Trump denounced his Republican rivals for being too weak on immigration.

"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best; they're not sending you," Trump said in his announcement speech. "They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

In recent weeks, Trump has delivered several carefully scripted speeches as his team attempts to regain some semblance of control in the race following weeks of plummeting poll numbers.

In Colorado — once considered a swing state — Clinton has held a double-digit lead over Trump in multiple recent state polls.

In recent national polling, Clinton leads head-to-head match-ups against Trump, with the Democrat holding 47 percent support compared to 41.5 percent for the New York businessman, according to averages compiled by RealClear Politics.

Don't fall for a lie started by an immigration lawyer and spread through Univision. KellyAnne is incompetent to have handled her interview the way she did adding fuel to an arson fire.

STOP IT!! Until the words come out of Donald Trump's mouth, keep your panties on and trust him. He's already had to come out today and defy KellyAnne and claim he's not flip-flopping. He's not going to "legalize" illegal aliens. He's going to have a deportation force and get them out of here. Will some come back at some point? Well, isn't that the law? Some in 3 years, some in 10 years. It's the law.

So get ready for success. Stop falling for the media lies of Univision, stop falling for the lies of immigration lawyers lining their pockets representing illegal aliens, stop falling for the GRAND STUPIDITY of a former Cruz pollster named KellyAnne Conway who is clearly an open borders nut.

This is a real pickle at the moment for Donald Trump and no matter what he does he will likely anger a big group of people. Maybe immigration should have been left as it has been previously discussed in his security speech and other comments.

I doubt that any Hispanic at the meeting over the weekend supports anything less than amnesty. And we know that Illegal Aliens will vote democrat no matter what is said or promised by republicans. There is power in their numbers if allowed to remain.

Chris Collins, Trump supporter, saying that he thinks deportation is meant to be "rhetorical", where you go in one room, get papers and a social security number, then exit with legalization should disturb those who have fought illegal immigration for years. Visiting Consulates has been mentioned as if we should trust them.

Kellyanne Conway has supported amnesty through her polling for Mike Pence (Touchback Amnesty) and others. Her comments this past week certainly didn't give support to Donald Trump's past statements on deportation. Fairness but firmness seems to favor the illegal aliens over the unfairness that illegal immigration has cost the nation and its citizens.

The illegal aliens have shown such disrespect and lack of appreciation that granting them amnesty insults us again and rewards them again. Replacing the illegal population with those who are literate and can speak English would help even more to stop the ongoing theft of taxpayer dollars for interpreters and all of the other needs that come with a foreign low skilled and uneducated people. Schools will still be impacted with high costs.

Where is the amnesty door for millions of Americans who have committed crimes, the door they can enter to be absolved of past illegal acts? Granting amnesty for illegals does nothing to reverse the demographic changes to small towns and states that have been creeping toward majority Hispanic.

Visa overstays should be given a short period of time to leave. Start with the newer ones. But why haven't they been asked to leave before now? If these individuals are working under their names why haven't they been told your time is up. Why haven't employers been told they are not authorized to stay or work or be in school if the visa is expired?

Somewhere these other countries and their citizens have to start making progress in their own lands.

But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Exactly. KellyAnne was speaking for herself not for Trump.

Stephen Miller said in February (Daily Caller) that the Trump Immigration plan revolved around 3 principles.

    1) A nation without borders is not a nation.

    2) A nation without walls is not a nation, referring to laws and the enforcement of those laws.

    3) "The last principle of the three is that a nation that does not serve its citizens is not a nation, which is to say that the social contract of the country is that the interest group that is served is not special interests, or lobbyists, or transnational corporations, or citizens of other countries. It is the citizens of this country, the United States," he added.

    Stephen Miller gets it.

IMO, Mr. Trump should avoid meetings with hyphenated groups. He should speak to all Americans. Pandering can get you into trouble.

Donald Trump is on with Bill O'Reilly now. Bill is going straight to the deportation issue.

Bill just fans the flames saying you will have to hire a lot more people and round them up in detention centers. Trump says no detention centers and we will do it fairly and humanely. Criminal illegal aliens are the agreed upon target for first deportations.

I do believe that Mr. Trump knows what is best and that he wants to do what is best for the country and for the American people in regards to illegal immigration and the presence of the illegal aliens. He must navigate against powerful lobbying forces and others. I hope he thinks " "America First" as he crafts his thinking and plans because we have heard the words " think Mexico first" far too many times.
