Late Sunday night, I alerted you to the possibility of an introduction of Rep. Shuler's SAVE Act. I suggested that some of you might want to start calling your Representative to ask them to take a look at the bill.

By late Monday morning, Shuler's office was being pounded with phone calls from other congressional offices in the Capitol.

The staffers were asking Shuler's staffers, "What is this immigration bill that our constituents are calling us about this morning?"

Most of them hadn't heard a thing about Shuler's SAVE Act to keep illegal aliens out of U.S. jobs. So, they were really startled when NumbersUSA members started calling them as soon as they arrived at the office Monday and kept calling all day.

After three days of tens of thousands of faxes and thousands of phone calls, every office in the U.S. House (if not every staffer) has now heard about the SAVE Act from NumbersUSA constituents.

You have achieved your first task of moving this into the radar of nearly every office.

I'm sure your calls helped create more receptivity among Republicans who discussed the bill at their big meeting today.

Now, we have to help push your Representative to sign the bill (if he/she hasn't already).

REPUBLICANS BEGINNING TO GET EXCITED ABOUT THE DEMOCRATIC 'SAVE ACT'

Many Republicans have been cautious about a Democratic "Enforcement-Only" bill being promoted by Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) and gaining dozens of Democratic original co-sponsors before its introduction next week.

With nearly all the top leaders of the Democratic Party promoting amnesty and other rewards for illegal immigration, the question among Republicans has been whether the "SAVE Act" that comes from mostly lower-level Democratic Members of Congress can be trusted to truly combat illegal immigration?

Key Republican leaders of the anti-illegal movement have been giving the SAVE Act close scrutiny this week.

Doubts began to melt with the enthusiastic endorsement of the SAVE Act by California Republican Brian Bilbray, who earlier this year replaced Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) as chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus (when Tancredo began running for President).

Bilbray promoted the SAVE Act at a key meeting of House Republicans today. And Rep. Tom Feeney (R-Fla.) was reported to have received a strongly positive reception from his fellow Republicans after walking them through the details of the bill.

Our Capitol Hill Team has been in the offices of our best Republican allies against illegal immigration all day. The report from the team is that these Republicans, after looking it over, believe in Shuler's bill.

So do dozens of Democrats whose offices we've visited recently.

The fact is that this is becoming an incredible bi-partisan bill that represents the will of the American people to finally turn the tide on illegal immigration.

We are not allowed to tell you the names of all the original co-sponsors until the bill is introduced next week. But if your U.S. Representative already has officially signed up as a co-sponsor, you will find a 'thank you' fax on your Action Buffet corkboard.

And we CAN tell you that your faxes and phone calls are really making a difference on the Hill. It is beginning to look like this bill could be introduced with more original co-sponsors than any immigration bill ever.

The bandwagon is on a roll.

I received the same thing in my email. I STILL don't trust anything yet. I honestly believe Shuler has a trick up his sleeve. I bet they are going to make some kind of deal in exchange for the illegal aliens already here. And that won't be good enough for me. ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS NEED TO GO! And I don't mean "touch back". They all need to eventually go home on their own and the ones left over should be deported. AND, NO MORE ANCHOR BABIES! I would take back the "automatic citizenship" given to any child born to an illegal alien parent, dating waaaaay back.

Well I can understand your skepticism, however, Numbersusa and Roy Beck have been in this fight for 16 years. I trust numbers. Also, you have to remember that OK is a fairly conservative state. Most Democrats in that state are what we call blue-dog Democrats. In other words, they tend to be conservative Democrats. Also, Rahm Emanuel's statement this week was also interesting in that he said "immigration has become the new third rail of politics. Right now the Democrats are on the wrong side of the immigration debate." Emanuel is the Democratic leader who helped get the Dems back in power this last election. He's also the one who said to the OBL lobbyists that they couldn't really do anything until the SECOND term of a Democrat President. This guy isn't dumb.

Shuler is from North Carolina, not Oklahoma.

Shuler is not an illegal immigrant supporter. His hand in the bill is not what really worries me. What does worry me though is the amendments his liberal buddies will attempt to attach to the bill, and Lord knows what nasty things the Senate will do to the bill (should it get that far).

For the first time since I joined Numbers USA 2years agoI feel some doubt in a bill they are supporting.I myself will never support any bill going through Congress until they start to REALLY enforce the laws we already have.Any law that passes will be amended to death and watered down to favor illegal aliens.How in the world can any member of Congress expect citizens to support a new bill when current ones are not being really enforced?I probably will wait before I support a new law and will probably not encourage my Representative to co-sponsor.JMO .I have written Numbers saying what I have posted here.

You are right it could be the amendments that could be a problem. However, if the Dems really want to put themselves on the back burner election time, this is a good way to do it. Like Newt said today, they have been on the wrong end of this issue, so if they keep this up their new referendum will be "How stupid do we think the American Public Is?"

He's right. IF they keep it up we'll just keep saying "You really do think we're stupid, well we'll show you just how stupid we are November 2008.

I've belonged to numbers USA for over 2 years too. And I don't doubt Roy Beck feels good about this one. But like you, I am afraid of what kind of amendments they will try to attach to it to form another "Grand Compromise" thingie. I just want BILLS THAT HAVE BEEN ON THE BOOKS FOR YEARS NOW, ENFORCED! Then maybe, I'll start believing.

The bill is very promising AS WRITTEN. If it comes to the floor, any amendments that would compromise the bill's intent will need to be voted down (with ALIPAC's determined outcry, of course) or if the do get attached, we mount a major campaign to torpedo the whole thing.

I can't help but feel worried as by the time the amendments get to the floor it is alittle to late to fight. I do not trust them!!

I do trust Numbers but I hope they they are very careful with this!!
