    Roof Snipers Appear In Odessa

First Kiev, now Odessa? The answer to the question of who is doing the shooting and who is being shot at will need to wait until another Victoria Nuland phone recording is released.

Will this weekend be a repeat of Kiev from late February? Judging by the violent reaction in gold, to some at least the answer is a definitive yes.

Ukraine's "Anti-Terrorist" Operation Turns Deadly In Odessa - Live Feed

Submitted by Tyler Durden on 05/02/2014 10:37 -0400

The earlier Ukraine "anti-terrorist" operation in Solvyansk has resulted in the death of at least 2 servicemen and now tensions are roiling in Odessa as the Ukraine government tries to live up to the IMF's demands or "fight or no money". Violent clashes have broken out at a pro-Ukraine rally in Odessa and at least one person is dead. As the live feed below shows, things are getting out of control fast. Ukraine's acting president adds:

    • *TURCHYNOV SAYS OPERATION PROGRESSING SLOWER THAN GOVT WANTED
    • *TURCHYNOV URGES SEPARATISTS TO LAY DOWN WEAPONS AND SURRENDER
    • *UKRAINE REBELS HIDING BEHIND HOSTAGES, CIVILIANS: TURCHYNOV

Ukrainian authorities have also banned Russian air companies from making flights to the eastern Ukrainian cities
; and, perhaps ironically to some, Russia has called for an emergency UN meeting to discuss Ukraine's actions.

The initial operation started in Solvyansk...

    • UKRAINE'S ACTING PRESIDENT SAYS OPERATION IN EASTERN TOWN OF SLAVIANSK WAS COMPLICATED BY THE USE OF HUMAN SHIELDS, DID NOT PROGRESS AS QUICKLY AS HOPED FOR
    • UKRAINE'S ACTING PRESIDENT SAYS OPERATION IN SLAVIANSK CONTINUES, CALLS ON PRO-RUSSIAN SEPARATISTS TO LAY DOWN ARMS, FREE HOSTAGES
    • *SLOVYANSK REBELS SUFFERED `SIGNIFICANT' LOSSES: TURCHYNOV

    Then they moved to Odessa:

    • *CLASHES BREAK OUT AT PRO-UKRAINIAN RALLY IN ODESSA

"There are at least 10 injured, have shrapnel wounds, there is a traumatic injury from a weapon. At the moment, both sides are building barricades in different areas of the city center, some of the streets has captured one side, some - other "

According to local media, the site of the collision are fifteen hundred aggressive young people, many of whom are armed. Gathered chanting: "Glory to Ukraine!", "Death to the enemies", "Moskal knives." In the course went firecrackers, smoke grenades, batons. Fighting used stones from the dismantled bridge, there were "Molotov cocktails". People continue to arrive.

    With Molotov Cocktails flying...

    As Ukraine bans Russian flights:

Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency stated on Friday that Ukranian aviation authorities have unilaterally banned Russian air companies from making flights to the eastern Ukrainian cities of Donetsk and Kharkiv starting from today, Russian news agency Itar-Tass reports.

Russia's claimed that this ban was unprecedented violantion of international air traffic agreements, but said Moscow would not respond with similar measures

    Just sayin ..

Russian bombers, fighter jets 'seen over Crimea'

Simferopol (Undefined) (AFP) - Several dozen Russian planes including what appeared to be strategic bombers and fighter jets have been spotted in the sky above the Moscow-controlled peninsula of Crimea, witnesses and experts said.

According to Russian media, President Vladimir Putin is poised to visit Crimea on Friday after overseeing the main military parade on Red Square when Russia celebrates its victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

A local aviation expert told AFP on Sunday that he had sighted a number of planes over the peninsula's main city of Simferopol on Saturday, including supersonic heavy strategic bombers and heavy military transport aircraft.

The expert, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he had also seen refuelling tankers and MiG-29 jets.

Another expert, Alexei Savich, who was shown footage of the aircraft, said a Sukhoi Su-34 fighter jet could be seen among the planes.

He also identified the tankers and military transport planes.

Many local residents have also seen the aircraft rumble over the peninsula including in Simferopol and the neighbouring town of Bakhchisarai.

"It was a bit scary," local resident Arzy Khaibulaeva told AFP. "Children were frightened."

She said the planes were flying low and some were seen re-fuelling in mid-air.

The Russian defence ministry declined to comment on Sunday.

Savich suggested that Moscow might be moving "some serious military aircraft" to the peninsula.

"Russia is most likely ramping up its military presence on the peninsula," he told AFP.

In March, Putin sent troops to Ukraine's Russian-speaking peninsula claiming he had to protect the local population after a popular uprising ousted Ukraine's Moscow-backed president.

    Ravenous Russia? Thirsty Crimea.
By Oleg Shynkarenko 14 hours ago The Daily Beast

As violence rages in eastern Ukraine, the chaos of downed helicopters, urban combat and OSCE (among other) hostages in Slovyansk may soon solidify into a concerted Russian military campaign. If the Russian tanks and thousands of troops cross Ukraine’s eastern border in the regions of Slovyansk, Donetsk and Kharkiv, don’t expect them to roll like thunder toward Kiev, /Their first move will likely be a quick drive through Zaporizhia and Kherson toward… Crimea. There are several reasons for this: one obvious one being that military assets in Kremlin-annexed Crimea currently are inaccessible to Russia by land. But there is another more basic reason: resources.

Crimea may be formally and theoretically part of Russia at this point, but it still relies on the Ukraine mainland for the most basic of necessities such as water and electricity. Thus Russian forces may soon resort to an armed southern invasion to take control of the pipelines that feed Crimea, and once that bridge is crossed, as it were, the military campaign could stretch all the way to Transnistria, the breakaway eastern province of Moldova.

READ MORE North Korea: ‘The U.S. Is a Living Hell’

The amount of the water currently flowing through the North Crimea Channel into the peninsula is less than 60 percent of what it was before the Russian occupation. Crimea relies on the Ukrainian mainland for 80 percent of its local water supply, and much of Crimea is farmland. A lack of water could influence dramatically this year’s harvest and could potentially render the Crimean peninsula an agricultural wasteland. So much for the dreams of security and prosperity that were part of Moscow’s psy-ops. As millions learned under the Soviets, propaganda doesn’t grow beans.

The government in Kiev says that Crimea is not paying for the water the peninsula is consuming and that the peninsula has accrued a debt of nearly $200,000. (This echoes, of course, Moscow’s insistence that Ukraine pay more for Russian gas.) Kiev calls this “the practice of unauthorized water intake” or to put it simply, Crimea is stealing our water: more than four million cubic meters worth. Self-declared Russo-Crimean authorities, on the other hand, claim that Kiev’s price of $1 USD for a cubic meter is too expensive.

READ MORE The US Marine Who Disappeared in Syria

At first the water war was primarily a legal dispute with each side accusing the other of contractual violations. But self-declared “Crimean parliament chairman” Vladimir Konstantinov has responded to Kiev’s tightening of the taps with rage and threats of retaliation. “The North Crimea Channel was built by Crimeans, it is our channel, and they grabbed at that pipeline valve with both hands,” he claimed. Konstantinov says he hopes that “common sense” will prevail (no irony there), but if it does not, he warns ominously, “We know what to do.”

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has suggested two implausible solutions to Crimea’s water problem: building a water supply system directly from Russia (about a 200 kilometer stretch) or building a desalination plant. A similar desalination plant already has been operating for half a year in Crimea and it produces only 80 cubic meters (at $1.2 USD per cubic meter) of fresh water a day. Just to compare: the North Crimea Channel pumps 82 cubic meters a second. The weakest aspect of Medvedev’s projects is the time necessary for their completion.

READ MORE 'In Cold Blood' in Ukraine

Meanwhile Crimean farmers say that they have just days before this season’s sowing process fails. Of course, if we can mix our classical references, Russia has its Sword of Damocles to cut this Gordian Knot. Putin’s army waits at the Ukrainian border and if the Kremlin officially affirms the need to “protect” Russian-speaking Ukrainians’ rights, those forces already have their target.

The Kremlin’s rational: Why should Moscow worry about solving the logistical problems of freshly-seized lands (like Crimea) if it can simply just seize more? If Ukraine refuses to provide water at a convenient price then why not just take the whole pipeline?

READ MORE Today in 45 Seconds

Water isn’t the only issue. Crimea has similar difficulties with electricity. Recently the local Crimean branch of the Ukrainian DTEK company declared that it could switch off the energy supply to local inhabitants because of the mounting energy debt, which has reached $74.1 million. There were some rumors that Russians “suggested” that the owner of DTEK Rinat Akhmetov sell his business, but he refused. Regardless, Crimea doesn’t have its own independent energy supply and as of now it remains dependent on the Ukrainian mainland.

If Putin decides to resolve some old problems with an armed invasion, he will only find new ones—Western sanctions and Ukrainian resistance will be hard to ignore and even harder to overcome. The kinds of practical problems that now face Russia as it holds on to Crimea will multiply if it tried to occupy still more territory.

Bank Torched To The Ground As Ukraine Expands Military Operation In East

Submitted by Tyler Durden on 05/03/2014 21:24 -0400

A day after over 40 anti-government protesters died brutally in Ukraine's Black Sea town of Odessa, and Kiev resumed its "anti-terrorist" military offensive in Slavyansk and Krematorsk in what now even Ukraine officials admit is essentially a civil war, Ukraine has escalate its operation against pro-autonomy activists in the city of Mariupol, southeastern Ukraine, as well as the town of Konstantinovka, according to local self-defense activists.
According to RT, the troops have moved into Mariupol and have surrounded an administrative building held by anti-government protesters. There are a few hundred activists inside the building. They told RT that the army is warning them that if they do not leave the building in the coming minutes, they will be fired at and the building will be seized.
“Special forces units are in the city center. Mainly, they are deployed in yards and make warning shots from there,” Mikhail Krutko from the self-defense headquarters told Interfax news agency. “Residents are unarmed, they blocked roads in the city center, built up barricades from tires and other things not to let hardware pass. They set tires on fire,” Krutko said.

People on the ground told RT’s Paula Slier that there are 300-500 anti-Kiev protesters there and they are unarmed. There have so far been no reports of injuries. At the same time, a convoy of Ukrainian APCs has forced its way through self-defense checkpoints near the Donetsk Region town of Konstantinovka. Shots and alarm can be heard inside the city.

There are reports that at least two people have been killed, Paula Slier says. The TV building has reportedly been seized by the army and all transmissions are currently off-air, she adds. Self-defense units earlier seized the security services headquarters in the town.
The location of the latest military escalation: clearly the proximity to the Russian border is concerning.

The overnight events are hardly the end of the Kiev government's attempt to regain the east: National Security Council secretary Andrey Parubiy has said that Kiev is planning to begin special military operations in other regions of Ukraine after it completes its current operations in Slavyansk and Kramatorsk.

Over the past few days, Ukraine has stepped up its military operations in southeastern Ukraine against pro-autonomy activists. The main opposition strongholds include Kramatorsk, Slavyansk, Lugansk, and others.
Naturally, as the IMF made it quite clear last week, unless the acting government manages to supress eastern militias and activists, any Ukraine bailout money could be halted, the government's crackdown against its people is understandable. Just as understandable would be Russia's inevitable retaliation against Ukraine's crackdown, as the civil war become a full blown conflict between two nations.
But for now, perhaps the most dramatic footage of the night, is this clip from Mariupol, where a branch office of PrivatBank has just burned down to the ground. At this point US bankers are slaying various animals to their assorted idols hoping nobody in the US is watching this clip and getting any ideas.

China, Russia Military Ties Deepen With Naval Drill In East China Sea

Submitted by Tyler Durden on 05/02/2014 22:09 -0400

Submitted by Zachary Zeck via The Diplomat,

On Wednesday, China announced that it plans to hold joint naval drills with Russia in the East China Sea later this month.
“These drills are regular exercises held by China and Russia’s navies, and the purpose is to deepen practical cooperation between the two militaries, to raise the ability to jointly deal with maritime security threats,” China’s Defense Ministry said in a statement published on its website.
Voice of America reports that the joint naval drills will be held in late May off the coast of Shanghai. This is significantly north of the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands that have been the source of ongoing tensions between Japan and China in recent years. Russia also has an ongoing territorial dispute with Japan over the Kuril Islands located even further north off the far eastern coast of Russia.
Few details have been released about the scope of the naval drills at this time.
Still, the announcement is not surprising, and is not likely aimed at Japan in particular. As China’s Defense Ministry noted, Russia and China have a history of holding joint naval drills, and their military ties have grown stronger in recent years. For example, last July, Moscow and Beijing held a massive naval drill with live firing exercises off the coast of the Russian city of Vladivostok. According to Chinese media reports at the time, the drill was the People’s Liberation Army’s largest ever with a foreign country.
The New York Times reported that China’s Navy sent “seven warships, including a guided-missile destroyer with Aegis-type radars that track and guide weapons to destroy enemy targets, and missile frigates with antisubmarine abilities” to last year’s drill. These vessels were from China’s North Sea Fleet and the South Sea Fleet. Beijing also deployed three helicopters and a special warfare unit to last year’s drill. The Russian Navy, on the other hand, deployed a kilo-class submarine and the guided-missile cruiser Varyag, which is the flag ship of the Russian Pacific Fleet.
“This shows unprecedented good relations between China and Russia,” Professor Wang Ning, director of the Center for Russian Studies at the Shanghai International Studies University, told the New York Times about last year’s drill. “It shows that the two countries will support each other on the global stage.”
Indeed, the joint naval drills are merely one example (and result) of the stronger bilateral ties Russia and China have enjoyed since President Xi Jinping took over the Chinese Communist Party in November 2012. China began a new charm offensive towards Russia early in Xi’s tenure. This was demonstrated by, among other things, the fact that Xi Jinping chose Russia as the destination for his first official foreign trip as China’s president in March 2013. He returned later in the year for the G-20 summit, and was back again earlier this year to attend the opening ceremony of the Sochi Olympics.
The close relationship between the two leaders has yielded some notable results, as well. Besides the unprecedented naval drills mentioned above, Russia has signaled a greater willingness to sell China advanced defense technology during Xi’s tenure.
Around the time of Xi’s first trip to Russia last March, there were reports that China and Russia were negotiating their largest ever defense agreement. The deal would reportedly include Russia selling China as many as four Lada Class air-independent propulsion submarines as well as 24 Su-35 multirole fighter jets. The Su-35 fighters, in particular, would greatly enhance China’s ability to project air power in the South China Sea. More recently, there have been reports that Vladimir Putin has approved the sale of Russia’s most advanced air and missile defense system, the S-400, to China.
Perhaps of more lasting importance, Russia and China have been significantly boosting their energy ties, which could solidify a more long-term relationship between them. Most notably, in June of last year Rosneft, Russia’s state-owned energy giant, agreed to double its oil exports to China. Under the deal, which was worth an estimated $270 billion, Russia will ship 365 million tons of oil to China over the next 25 years.
Similarly, numerous signs suggest that after a decade of ongoing talks, Russia and China are in the final stages of negotiating a massive 30-year natural gas supply deal. Once the deal is completed, according to Bloomberg News, Russia’s “Gazprom plans to supply as much as 38 billion cubic meters of gas to China, about 24 percent of the company’s deliveries to Europe last year.” Achieving this will require the construction of a massive pipeline to carry the natural gas from eastern Russia into China. Russia will reportedly need to spend about $22 billion to build the pipeline.
The two sides are hoping that the deal will be ready in time for Putin’s trip to China on May 20, which will take place immediately prior to the joint naval drills.

America’s “Immaculate Conception” Theory of War Crimes

Ukrainian War Crimes Whitewashed by Western Press

    Washington’s Blog
    May 4, 2014

After more than 30 people died in a fire in the Ukrainian seaside resort town of Odessa, most of the Western press pretended that no one knows what happened or whose fault it was. For example, see these stories from the Guardian and BBC.
    But USA Today reports:
Witnesses and journalists reported that as the building burned with people inside, a crowd shouted, “Glory to Ukraine!” and “Death to enemies!” [These are neo-Nazi slogans.]
    ***
[T]he Associated Press reported that the Russian sympathizers took refuge in the trade union hall on Kulikovo Field Square after government supporters rousted their encampment outside and then burned their tents. Police said the building was set on fire with Molotov cocktails.
At 5 seconds into this 15-second video, you can see a Molotov cocktail being thrown at the building in which the Russian sympathizers:

And here is a picture of right-wing nationalist Ukrainian women making the Molotov cocktails which were later hurled at the building:

The design on the girls’ shirt on the right is the same as on the shirt of the Ukrainian neo Nazi with the unusual hairdo:

(The black and white photograph in the background is of Stepan Bandera, a Ukrainian who sided with the Nazis during World War II. And see this).

And of the armbands on these men:

The symbol refers to the the neo Nazi Social-National Party of Ukraine:

Former Associated Press and Newsweek reporter Robert Parry points out how bad New York Times coverage of the Odessa attack has been:
On Saturday, for instance, the dominant story from Ukraine was the killing of more than 30 ethnic Russian protesters by fire and smoke inhalation in Ukraine’s southern port city of Odessa. They had taken refuge in a union building after a clash with a pro-Kiev mob which reportedly included right-wing thugs.
Even the neocon-dominated Washington Post led its Saturday editions with the story of “Dozens killed in Ukraine fighting” and described the fatal incident this way: “Friday evening, a pro-Ukrainian mob attacked a camp where the pro-Russian supporters had pitched tents, forcing them to flee to a nearby government building, a witness said. The mob then threw gasoline bombs into the building. Police said 31 people were killed when they choked on smoke or jumped out of windows.
“Asked who had thrown the Molotov cocktails, pro-Ukrainian activist Diana Berg said, ‘Our people – but now they are helping them [the survivors] escape the building.’” [Here's the Post story.]
By contrast, here is how the New York Times reported the event in its Saturday editions as part of a story by C.J. Chivers and Noah Sneider focused on the successes of the pro-coup armed forces in overrunning some eastern Ukrainian rebel positions.
“Violence also erupted Friday in the previously calmer port city of Odessa, on the Black Sea, where dozens of people died in a fire related to clashes that broke out between protesters holding a march for Ukrainian unity and pro-Russian activists. The fighting itself left four dead and 12 wounded, Ukraine’s Interior Ministry said. Ukrainian and Russian news media showed images of buildings and debris burning, fire bombs being thrown and men armed with pistols.”
Note how the Times evades placing any responsibility on the pro-coup mobfor trying to burn the “pro-Russian activists” out of a building, an act that resulted in the highest single-day death toll since the actual coup which left more than 80 people dead from Feb. 20-22. From reading the Times, you wouldn’t know who had died in the building and who had set the fire.
    Billmon comments:
Not even “atrocities were commited,” just a fire “related” to clashes that “broke out.” Immaculate conception theory of war crimes.
Postscript: While the Western press tries to paint the percentage of neo Nazis within the new Ukrainian government as small, the leader of the “protests” which ousted the previous president of Ukraine is a neo Nazi and follower of WWII Nazi sympathizer Stepan Bandera, and neo Nazis are largely in control of the new government.

CIA and FBI Work with Fascists in Ukraine as “War in Europe” Unfolds

Germany, France, Britain, Italy and United States prepare for war between NATO and Russia

    Kurt Nimmo
    Infowars.com
    May 5, 2014

Andriy Parubiy, the National Security and Defense Council boss of the junta in Kyiv, announced on Sunday the Ukrainian military will expand the “active stage of the operation in towns where extremists and terrorists are carrying out illegal activities.”
Central banker and junta PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk declares war on Russia.
The renewed effort to assert control and defeat anti-junta activists and paramilitaries in Donetsk, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Kostyantynivk and other towns in eastern Ukraine coincides with news the CIA and FBI will work with the regime to put down popular uprisings against the government in Kyiv.
On Monday, coup Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said the failure of police in Odessa, where violence claimed the lives of dozens of people over the last few days, has resulted in the formation of “Kiev-1,” a paramilitary comprised of “civil activists” who previously worked with the fascist Right Sector and Svoboda to overthrow Ukraine’s elected president in February.
National Security and Defense Council boss Parubiy was the founder of the Social National Party of Ukraine, a fascist political party fashioned after the Nazis. It became Svoboda, a nationalist party led by Oleh Tyahnybok, a prominent member of the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian Parliament.
The latest move by the junta in Kyiv and the participation of the CIA and the FBI in military activity adds a new urgency to the crisis. Since the failure of Geneva agreement last month, Germany, France, Britain, Italy and the United States are preparing for the possibility of war between NATO and Russia.
“After 20 years in which it was almost unimaginable, it seems like a major war in Europe, with shots potentially being fired between Russia and NATO, is once again a possibility,” Der Spiegel opined prior to the latest developments and the move against activists in eastern Ukraine.
“Imagine a possible energy war, where Russia basically cuts off gas for Europe (that could spill over more broadly if things go badly). Or even more worrisome, a shooting war between the East and the West,” writes Chris Martenson for PeakProsperity.
“For those living in Europe who are exposed to the possible fallout that would result from the loss of supplies of Russian energy, the time to begin preparing is right now. As we say often on this site, you’d much rather be a year early than a day late in your preparations.”
On Monday, Russia warned that the situation in Ukraine may lead to an escalation of conflicts throughout Europe.
“We are convinced that, in case of the continuation of lawlessness in Ukraine, the situation there may escalate into a serious threat to regional peace and security, and lead to further growth of cross-national and interethnic contradictions and conflicts in Ukraine and throughout Europe,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said, according to RIA Novosti.
The Russian Presidential Human Rights Council also called on the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Europe (OSCE) to pressure Ukraine into providing foreign humanitarian missions access to the regions affected by violence in order to provide medical and psychological assistance to victims.
Characterized as a “last ditch effort to head off a wider confrontation,” Didier Burkhalter, the chairman of the OSCE, is expected in Moscow on Wednesday as calls rise for the group to mediate the growing crisis between the junta in Kyiv and its opposition in eastern Ukraine. Burkhalter’s mission is undermined by the military operation by the junta and the participation of the CIA and the FBI.

Ongoing military operations in Slavyansk have left at least 20 rebels dead and dozens more civilians injured according to Interfax.

As RT reports, fatalities are on both sides with little progress reported one way or the other. The White House says it's "extremely concerned" by the deteriorating situation in southern Ukraine. Perhaps more important for the average American citizen, Klitschko has decided to postpone his planned wedding to Hayden Panettiere due to the conflict... now it's getting serious!!

    As RT reports,

There were fatalities among both Kiev loyalists and local militia members after government troops renewed the crackdown on the defiant eastern Ukrainian protester stronghold of Slavyansk. Over a dozen of people have been killed, including some civilians.

There was a shooting on the outskirts of Slavyansk as pro-government troops raided a protester checkpoint on Monday.

At least 10 self-defense fighters and their unarmed civilian supporters have been killed in the latest clashes, the commander of Slavyansk self-defense, Igor Strelkov, told RIA Novosti.

We suffered losses – about 10 people, including civilians, 20-25 people were injured. I do not know the losses of our adversaries; clearly they are smaller than ours, they have armor. Most of our losses came from plainclothes [troops], disguised as civilians. We fell into their ambush near a petrol station,” Strelkov said.

As the physical and emotional stains of Odessa remain...

And, as AP reports, The White House says it's "extremely concerned" by the deteriorating situation in southern Ukraine.

The U.S. and Europe have been focused on eastern Ukraine, near Russia, where pro-Russian separatists have been occupying buildings for weeks. But the unrest has spread to Ukraine's southern port of Odessa, where Ukraine's government is seeking to re-establish control.

White House spokesman Jay Carney says the possible loss of Odessa underscores the need for an immediate de-escalation to the crisis. He's suggesting Russia still needs to follow through with its part of a diplomatic deal to de-escalate.

Riots in Odessa led to 46 deaths Friday when a government building was set on fire. Carney says Ukrainian authorities should launch a full investigation. He says the U.S. mourns with Ukrainians the heartbreaking loss of life.
    And then there's this...

The unrest in the Ukraine is reaching as far as Hollywood — at least, as far as "Nashville" actress Hayden Panettiere's wedding is concerned.

"Everything that's happening in Ukraine definitely put a hold on things, but we have time," Panettiere, 24, told Parade Magazine about her upcoming nuptials to professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko.
