    You can't believe this one!!!

This is one for the books!

Last week I found a notice on my front door from the L.A. DWP stating that county workers would be at my house on Aug. 31 (today) to trim some of my trees in the backyard that were interfering with the phone lines.

I almost forgot about until I happened to notice a DWP worker (hispanic) out in the yard trimming some trees this afternoon. I waited about an hour before I decided to go out and check up on the job. So far so good!

When I approached him and started asking questions, he just smiled and said "No habla English"! Well, I figured there was no use standing around watching him...so I turned to go back into the house.

Just as I started to turn around, I noticed a body laying in the bushes!!! I almost fainted!!! I started to scream when all of a sudden the body started to move! The DWP worker ran over to the 'body' and tried to help him up but the guy was passed out....DEAD DRUNK!!! The sober worker kept trying to assure me (through sign language) that everything was okay. He finally got the other guy off the ground and half dragged him out to the DWP truck! The guy just passed right out in the truck!

After they left, I ran straight to the phone and called the supervisor at the DWP. They took a report and said they would launch an investigation. (Yeah, sure).

I'm positive both of these guys were illegals and they are working for the city...making good money. This was 2:00 in the afternoon and one of them was drunk! After they left, I went out and found beer cans in the bushes! I am sooo furious, I can't see straight!

Drinking and getting drunk is endemic to Mexican men! I don't care what anyone says...it's part of their 'macho' culture! We just have to get them out of our country! Enough is enough!

    "Cultural Impact"

    http://www.madd.org/aboutus/2552
    DRIVEN magazine, Fall 2001

Most everyone in this country is familiar with the phrases "Don't Drink and Drive" and "Designate a Driver," and understands them as lifesaving messages. Unfortunately, these messages are not always understood or embraced by all.

Adelita Avila knows how critical it is for MADD to reach out to and educate the Hispanic community about preventing drunk driving and to provide assistance when tragedy strikes.

In 1993, Avila sat at the hospital bedside of her 4-year-old son, Craig Bennett Jr., as he lay in a coma because of a drunk driver. Avila is a native of Mexico, and her then second grade English reading skills and understanding level prevented her from comprehending what the doctors were telling her about her son's condition. Even more frustrating was that the language barrier prevented her from being able to fight for justice in the court system. And, she was not alone. Avila met other Hispanic families who were grappling with the aftermath of a drunk driving crash-many of whom understood less than she did.

What she soon learned about the impact of drunk driving on Hispanics was disheartening.

"A lot of the crashes were caused by their own family members," Avila recalls. "And these families were shocked that something like this could happen. But it was of no surprise to me.

"In Mexico, the culture is very much a drinking culture. After a hard day at work, it is normal to end the workday by drinking beer. At social events - celebrations, spending time with family, visiting friends - it is commonplace to drink, for the men in particular. And drinking alcohol starts early for male Hispanics because as early as age 12, drinking alcohol is seen as a "rite of passage" to becoming a man.

"Also, in Mexico, traffic laws are quite different and the use of seatbelt restraints is almost unheard of. So, when you combine the Hispanic drinking culture with the lack of education on drunk driving prevention, you end up with tragic consequences."

Avila's experience pushed her toget an education so that she could help drunk driving victims and other Hispanics. Today, Avila is the bilingual victim advocate for MADD Metroplex in Dallas, Texas, where she works to educate and reach out to the Hispanic community.

    A Population at Risk
According to research compiled by Dr. Catherine Clark of the Alcohol Policy Group in Berkeley, Calif., Hispanic drivers are more likely than Anglo drivers to consume more alcohol more frequently and have been shown to be more likely than Anglos to drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level over .05 percent.

Hispanics also believed that it takes six to eight drinks to affect driving, while Anglos thought two to four drinks affected driving. Even more discouraging is that statistics show that the overall death rate due to motor vehicle crashes is higher among Hispanics than it is among Anglos or African Americans. And, Hispanic male teens are twice as likely as Anglo male teens to die in a car crash.

U.S. Census figures show the Hispanic/Latino population is the youngest and fastest-growing segment in America. This rapid growth, combined with a higher tendency to drive after drinking or ride with an impaired driver, is a recipe for death.

"The need to communicate lifesaving messages about drunk driving and underage drinking to the Spanish-speaking population is unquestionable," says Dr. Raul Caetano of the University of Texas School of Public Health and MADD national board member.

"We must develop communication tools and prevention programs that employ a variety of strategies directed at the individual, community leaders, community groups and official institutions."

Dr. Caetano's extensive research into drinking patterns and alcohol problems among Hispanics and other ethnic groups continues. "Much remains to be done, and the outcomes of such work would be beneficial to not only members of minority groups, but to the general population as well."

    A Lifesaving Strategy
Forming the plan to effectively communicate with Hispanics will be a multi-layered effort beginning with a strategic alliance between MADD and Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America.

"Mitsubishi Motors understands the best way to protect drivers and passengers is not only through safety advances in our vehicles, but also through teaching responsible driving behavior," says Gael O'Brien, vicepresident of corporate communications for Mitsubishi Motors. "We are so pleased to partner with MADD on an important initiative and help drive home MADD's message to communities across the nation."

A pilot program called "Pass the Keys - Pasa las Llaves" will be used in four MADD chapters in high-density Hispanic/Latino areas: Los Angeles/Orange County, Dallas, Miami and Chicago. Each site will have a Hispanic/Latino Advisory Council, composed of Latino community leaders, MADD volunteers and Mitsubishi Motors executives. The Council is charged with helping
develop ways to connect with the Hispanic population in its specific city and address distinctions among Spanish-speaking people to deliver MADD's lifesaving messages.

Margaret Collins, executive director of the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex Chapter, has already begun work with Mitsubishi Motors to reach out to the Hispanic community. "Mitsubishi's support enables us to take our safety message into more Latino community events focusing on Hispanic culture and family. We have already increased our number of bilingual volunteers by
    50 percent."

    MADD Miami-Dade Chapter
President Susan Isenberg is wellversed in the challenges ahead. "The Spanish-speaking population makes up 41 percent of Miami's citizenship and is over-represented in death and injury caused by impaired driving crashes. We are currently producing Spanish-language public service announcements for television and banners to be displayed throughout the county. With Mitsubishi's help, we'll be able to enhance our present efforts and create new ways to impact the community."

    Bridging the Gap
Impacting the Hispanic/Latino population is the focus of a communications handbook funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The handbook, titled "Tradiciones: A Guide to Understanding La Comunidad," offers tools and resources for MADD members and advocates while explaining the importance of Hispanic/Latino culture, language and family.

Building coalitions with national Hispanic/Latino organizations is another critical component in connecting with the Hispanic community.

Raul Yzaguirre, president of the National Council of La Raza, and actor Edward James Olmos have both agreed to serve on MADD's National Advisory Board, which will recommend ways the MADD organization can more effectively achieve its mission. Also, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), at its recent national convention, passed a resolution to join MADD's efforts to prevent underage drinking.

Each facet of MADD's Hispanic/Latino outreach initiative is designed with emphasis on family and outreach in a culturally relevant way. Financial support from organizations such as Mitsubishi Motors and NHTSA as well as MADD supporters make it possible for MADD to begin integrating its lifesaving message into the Hispanic/Latino society.

Local government hiring illegals, and paying them out of US citizen and legal immigrant's tax dollars. It makes me sick.

AmericanMe, that is awful. I can't believe the one cutting the tree branches wasn't mad for having to do the job all alone.
Once I had some workers in my home that were installing satellite tv(they weren't mexican or from SA but a different country) they took 5+ hours to hook it up! They took frequent breaks to smoke and talk on their cell phones on my back deck,it is also where they opened the packaging and left cigarette butts, hard plastic ties and trash on my deck and in the yard.Luckily I saw all the trash and picked it up before my dogs ate some of it.I reported them too.The company was very apologetic.
I am briefly going to mention the female in the house who now refuses to let any workers in the home if she is alone because of the experience. She wasn't touched but felt VERY threatened.

Personally, if this happened, I would call and get their names AND find an attorney and sue the DWP. I am serious. They were ON your property drunk and they didn't speak english.. THAT IS A HUGE CITY VIOLATION.

You need to get on the horn and not only complain but get their names (because they get dispatched to you - it is logged and listed).. and get an attorney or just file suite yourself... see, we need to start taking action.

    I can Believe it ,
we worked really hard to put a stop to the Job thieves in our town…

WE were dealing with this all summer in our area.

A company named ABC pro tree service a company that hires only minorities, They won a bid from our power company.
They did a horrible job and caused many accidents because of the inability to direct traffic and lack of on job site safety..
When I was self appointed to go the CG&E for our small town I found about 500 people had beat me to it...and ask about the of all the Latin or Hispanic BOYS on the crews
they did give me a number to the company and the crew supperviser from our part of the country
BUT the company would never let me talk with the owners or give me proof that the guys coming on my properties would be legal. The supervisors never called me back until they had left the area… The Gas and Electric company did say that the drug use and the men on the job where not expected or excepted and that those things would stop and they did … After we got man and started to really pushed the issues… Now we cant find anything around the county But American and one or two Hispanic guys working the crap out of there selves on the ground grinding up the stiff they cut down…

17 times different people have reported to the sheriffs about the drug smoking on the trucks One guy even walked up on a truck where the Mexicans where smoking pot right out in public . I said something when we smelled pot down at the speed way coming from one of the crews at 7:00 am one morning.
The Gas Company said that all those men had to pass drug test and be legal. But the ABC company didn’t follow its rules… The gas company did a good job at weeding out the riff raff but who knows what town is next

    STANDUP AND FIGHT AMERICA
it is the only ay to get things done...

    ~Q!!!!!!!!!!

ZEEZIL...thanks for the great article! I'm going to copy it and send it to Geraldo, who has the audacity to say that Mexicans and race has NO CORRELATION to the number of deadly drunk driving accidents! My foot...it doesn't!!!

I really have my doubts as to how much MADD or anyone else can accomplish through education, however. We just have too many illiterate, itinerant day laborers who are uneducatable. In fact, it's a national epidemic!

RAWHIDE...I hear you about the 'female' in your house never allowing any workers in the house when she is alone! We all have to follow that rule now...our world is not safe anymore.

And today...we have the Mexican trucks to look forward to!!! I heard Jim Santangelo from the Teamsters last nite on the Kevin James show and he said they are starting today!

    Happy Labor Day, everyone!

Too bad you couldn't have just left the drunk there, tarred and feathered him before he woke up.

I have made a point of complimenting and taking business cards from the services who are American owned and staffed. I mention to them that the very reason I'm hiring them is that they have no illegals on staff. A lot of them get it and are out there fighting everyday to compete against them.

I'm with the advice on taking legal action. What if the drunk had turned dangerous on you, or someone else. It's public drunkenness, plain and simple -- he shou haldve been arrested.

There are so many notices for urinating in public, public drunkenness, sexual exposures, etc. in our area. So many car break ins, stealing registration from cars, etc. This is their daily activity.
