Gut Viruses Highly Influenced By Diet

September 2, 2011 by Personal Liberty News Desk

The medical community remains unsure how the host of viruses present in the human gut contribute to health and disease, but recent research suggests that diet has a lot to do with viral populations in the intestine.

In a study, a team of scientists at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine divided a cohort of subjects into three subsets: one who consumed a high-fat, low-fiber diet, another who ate foods low in fat and high in fiber and a third group that was instructed to eat what they want.

After examining the stool samples of volunteers over the course of eight days, the researchers found that participants who ate similar diets had similar populations of gut viruses.

“The study provides a new window on the vast viral populations that live in the human gut, demonstrates that they vary radically between individuals, and shows that dietary changes can affect not just bacterial populations but also viral populations,” said senior author Frederic Bushman, Ph.D.

The researchers likened the human body to a coral reef, which is inhabited by a number of organisms that bolster its health and others that can be destructive.

    Government Facilitating High Food Prices

September 2, 2011 by Bob Livingston

The United States Department of Agriculture is bailing out chicken producers to the tune of $40 million.

Inflation-driven rising food prices, consumers with less discretionary income and alternatives to the hormone- and antibiotic-laden chickens found in grocery stores have caused a drop in the demand for store-bought chicken.

In a true free-market economy, this would force chicken producers to lower costs, streamline their operations and devise a better way of getting chicken to market at prices consumers would be willing (or able) to pay. But as discerning readers know, the United States is not a free-market capitalistic economy.

So rather than let Big Chicken deal with the fact that it erred by raising production 4 percent as demand was decreasing, the United States Department of Agriculture (read the American taxpayer), is bailing out chicken producers to the tune of $40 million.

From a CNNMoney story last week, “The USDA steps in occasionally to buy up food products that are in surplus supply in the market. By doing this, it helps shrink the glut of the product, raise retail prices and support producers that are struggling to cover the cost of production.” (Emphasis added)

So just as we saw with bailouts for the banksters, Wall Street thieves, automakers and union thugs, government is stepping in to reward bad decision-making by bailing out the chicken producers who failed to read the economic tea leaves.

Poor decisions by businesses are supposed to lead to better prices for consumers and opportunities for competitors to step in and do things a better way. But as long as government keeps meddling in the market, businesses will continue making poor decisions and the consumer will suffer with higher prices, fewer choices and inferior products.

And for the bleeding hearts who want to point out how wonderful it is that the purchased chicken products will be donated to Federal food assistance programs; yes, it’s true the food won’t be wasted. But odds are, rather than destroy the excess food, manufacturers would have used it to help the needy if for no other reason than to get a tax break. And better still, if the government would quit interfering in the market, food prices would drop to a point where more people could afford to buy what they needed and fewer people would require government assistance.

Do you see the cycle caused by feel-good government programs? It’s a death-spiral for the economy.

Water Wars: The Coming Global Crisis *Video*

Water Wars: The Coming Global Crisis *Video*

The first item on any preparedness list should always be fresh water. Whether you’re storing it or locating access points it is without a doubt the most critical element of any SHTF plan.

Without it you’re dead in 72 hours.

As we progress through the 21st century fresh water will become harder to find, especially fresh water that hasn’t been polluted by mass industrialization. In America, for the time being, we enjoy a fairly decent fresh water supply (we’ll avoid mentioning fluoride, lithium, radiation, pharmaceuticals and the host of other chemicals we find in America’s water supplies), especially when compared to the literally billions of people who don’t have access to anything remotely resembling filtered and treated water. Countries like India, China and the entire continent of Africa are all struggling to keep their populations hydrated.

As more people join the human population our water resources will become further strained. We use fresh water for everything. In the following video Future Money Trends notes that it often times reaches the point of ridiculousness:

Like oil, it takes water for many goods.
    A cotton T-shirt: 400 gallons.
    Denim jeans: 1,800 gallons.
    A car: 39,000 gallons.
A barrel of beer: 1,500 gallons.
One ton of steel: 62,000 gallons.
Consider how much water it takes to grow our food, feed our animals, and ourselves.

    The situation is serious.

It is our view that before the end of this century – probably even before we hit the halfway mark – super powers will go to war over water resources.

For the preparedness minded, we stress that any preparedness plan should include not just water storage planning, but water access planning that may include strategies such as rain harvesting. If you are looking to acquire a retreat property, access to water should be one of your primary considerations. Can you drill a well? Do you have access to a river that is near the mountains so that your supply is not contaminated? If not, do you have access to equipment such as an atmospheric water generator, or perhaps a manual desalinization system for those near oceans?

Future Money Trends warns that one of the largest aquifers in the world right here in the United States is going dry – and it will run out of fresh water within 60 years – and that’s if we don’t completely pollute the water table with chemicals, pesticides and radiation. Perhaps we have even less time.

We won’t run out of water tomorrow, but there may be a time in our lifetimes, and certainly in the lifetimes of the generation being born today, that water will be more valuable than anything else on the planet and very difficult to acquire. So difficult, in fact, that billions of humans may die as a result.

    Survival Scenario Flash Mob

by Jarhead Survivor on September 2, 2011
    61 comments

As you may have heard there have been a spate of “flash mobs” in the country recently. Basically a mob will materialize out of nowhere and will do anything from dance briefly to physically assaulting others.

Still don’t know what I’m talking about? Here are a few examples running the gamut:

First – the bikini flash mob. A harmless display of people suddenly stripping down to their bathing suits and dancing in a park in California.

Second – Report of a flash mob at a Wisconsin state fair.

And let’s not forget plain old-fashioned rioting due to sporting events like the hockey game in Canada or the rioting in England a couple of weeks ago.

    Here’s your scenario:

Use your own situation here. If you’re single without family how do you take care of yourself? Do you have an infant to defend like I do? Maybe you’re an older couple and you’ve got to take care of your wife or husband.

You’re walking through downtown (pick a city close by) with your family when you’re suddenly in the midst of a screaming mob. It started out as fun for them, but the crowd suddenly turns hostile striking out at those who aren’t with them. You witness a boy less than 20 yards away getting beat by two older teenagers. So far the crowd hasn’t turned on you or your family, but you feel it’s just a matter to time.

The nearest shelter is at least 100 yards away and you don’t see any way of getting there.

Being the careful prepper that you are you’re carrying a .40 caliber Glock with an extra magazine.

Suddenly two older teens – probably 17 or 18 years old – see you standing there with your family and turn towards you.

    What do you do?

One Portion-Controlled Meal Per Day May Lead To Weight Loss

September 5, 2011 by Personal Liberty News Desk

A diet does not have to involve a drastic overhaul of eating habits, as new research reveals that just one portion-controlled meal daily can make a big difference in weight loss over a year.

In a study, a team of scientists at Cornell University found that eating a reduced-calorie lunch may result in a 25-pound weight loss over the course of a year. Moreover, subjects in the study ate about 250 fewer calories daily, but didn’t feel hungry or overeat later in the day.

“Making small reductions in energy intake to compensate for the increasing number of calories available in our food environment may help prevent further weight gain, and one way of doing this could be to consume portion-controlled lunches a few times a week,” said co-author Carly Pacanowski.

Authors of the study noted that their finding that the body doesn’t notice small calorie reductions is significant because it may point to a simple, inexpensive method of weight loss. Additionally, the idea of losing body fat can be a daunting one for some individuals, but this research suggests that it may be a simple matter of tweaking daily routines.
