What would you do if your water supply became contaminated? Natural disasters can interrupt the flow of clean water. Following a disaster, some people may not have access to food and water for days or weeks. You can live for days without food; but you must have clean, potable water, or you will dehydrate. More »

As snug as a bug in a rug with tarps

You meet a better class of person on a hiking trip. Have you ever noticed how polite people are when you bump into them in the countryside? People are likely to kick sand in your face on the beach. Or you will find yourself shoulder to shoulder with some tattooed lager lout. The countryside or mountain trek, however, is invariably more civilized; the hiker who wants to connect to nature is usually a more intellectually inquisitive, eco-conscious and all-round erudite person.
The fall is a great time for hiking. The air is fresher and, once the leaves turn golden, you can find yourself in some of the most glorious orange forests. One of the most memorable fall walks I ever took was through South Wales to see Richard Burton’s birthplace in Pontrhydyfen. The winding valley road between Port Talbot and Pontrydyfen must be one of the most beautiful stretches in Britain. The landscape was so impressive that it was tempting to camp in the area overnight.
Some see fall as the season of decay but it’s really nature’s way of refreshing your senses after a stifling summer. So are you now aching for a great fall hike? All you need to do is get prepared for your trip. Most hikers automatically gravitate towards tents – part of a traditional backpack on such trips. Unfortunately, that’s why many campers find their backpacks are so heavy. Hence a typical hike through the forest usually involves multiple stops to take a breather.

You would do better to choose tarp for your countryside trek. It’s smaller and lightweight than your standard tent and ideal for forest camping because you can use trees and fallen logs to pitch it. Admittedly, setting up a tarp in the mountains is harder because it’s windy and exposed. There you will need extra pegging points and trekking poles or long sticks.
A tarp can shield you from your average storm as long as you pitch it low and small to minimize the rain. The only exception is during extremely testing weather conditions when, for example, a storm risks blowing you off a mountainside. Otherwise, you will be surprised at the excellent sanctuaries such tarps can provide you. Testimonials on the internet claim that a good tarp can survive a 30-minute hailstorm, and also howling winds upwards of 40 mph!

A tarp gives you great views because the material is fairly transparent and makes you feel more connected to the scenery around you. Also, a tarp’s open design enables you to get more ventilation inside. Condensation can be a serious problem in some tents to the extent that it can “rain” inside even on a clear night. So what are the potential hazards of a tarp cover? Insects can invade through the open sides but a simple solution is to hang mosquito netting from the crest of the tarp.
In order to get really comfortable, it’s also a good idea to carry some kind of ground cloth to lie on overnight to help you stay dry. It’s also important to feel safe under a tarp. The best way is to pitch the edges of your tarp flush with the ground so that nothing can creep up on you. You can also make a good fire near a tarp, essential during bad weather. Expensive nylon tents, on the other hand, do not react well to flying sparks and don’t concentrate the heat of a fire. If you happen to burn a hole in a cheap tarp all you have to do is patch it up with duct tape.
A good tarp can be set up in no time at all and will afford you comfort as well as the best view of your surroundings. All you need to do is find the best quality tarps for sale out there. And then you can hit the trail.
