More than 200 migrants detained by Border Patrol in desolate New Mexico border

The U.S. Border Patrol Bounds Forward Operating Base is seen in May 2017 in Antelope Wells, New Mexico. The operating base is adjacent to an international port of entry on the U.S.-Mexico border.

A group of more than 200 Central American migrants surrendered to U.S. Border Patrol agents Wednesday in a remote part of New Mexico, officials said.

The group of 247 men, women and children was the latest in a spike in large migrant groups arriving at the desolate desert border in Antelope Wells, officials said.

The migrants crossed the border shortly after midnight and surrendered to agents at the tiny Antelope Wells port of entry, the Border Patrol said in a news release.

Antelope Wells is the same location where a 7-year-old Guatemalan girl, Jakelin Caal Maquin, crossed the border with her father and was detained by Border Patrol before the girl died on Dec. 8 at an El Paso hospital.

An autopsy reporting the formal cause of death for Jakelin is pending.

Many of the migrants, including families and unaccompanied children, claimed to need medical care, the Border Patrol said.

The Border Patrol is seeing an influx of large migrants groups being taken to the border in Antelope Wells in New Mexico's remote Bootheel region.

The migrants were detained by agents at Camp Bounds Forward Operating Base, a Border Patrol substation intended to allow agents to deploy quicker in the remote region.

Antelope Wells is about a 90-minute drive to the Lordsburg Border Patrol Station, which covers the western New Mexico region.

The Border Patrol reported that smuggling groups transport groups to the border and then tell the migrants to cross and surrender to agents in the desolate desert region.

Since the start of fiscal year 2019 in October, there have been 24 groups of 100 or more migrants detained by Border Patrol in the Lordsburg region, the Border Patrol said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials have said they need additional resources to deal with the influx of migrants in the Bootheel of New Mexico.

During a Dec. 18 tour with members of Congress, CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said that smugglers found a "seam" that they are exploiting on the New Mexico border.

Migrants have told agents that smugglers arrange buses to take groups from Guatemala to New Mexico, arriving at the U.S. border within four or five days, McAleenan said.

At the border, migrants cross a barbed-wire fence and surrender to Border Patrol agents in a bid for asylum, McAleenan said.

The Antelope Wells station typically only had four border agents on duty at any time because only about 30 vehicles cross the border there each day, McAleenan said.

Additional agents have been deployed to the Antelope Wells region, CBP said.

Barb-wired fence? Ridiculous! Does our congress really think this passes as border security?

It is now 2019 but where border security is concerned we are still in 1950 Appalachia.
That being said, I Guarandamntee the 1950's Appalachia people could do a much better job with border security than our Government.

That is in just one small section of the border.

We have a useless and corrupt government or this would not be happening.

Barbed-wire fencing is used to pen livestock in, not keep humans out.

It's a stupid law that allows illegals to sneak across our border and then turn themselves in to claim asylum. Heck, it's even more stupid that an illegal can sneak across our border, get caught 11 months later, and then claim asylum (they have 12 months). Ridiculous, ridiculous, ridiculous!

These stupid loopholes that allow illegal aliens to exploit our archaic laws need to be closed! How did such a law ever come to be in the first place? I mean someone sneaks in and gets caught 11 months later can simply claim asylum and then they're going to get a free pass for 2 to 3 more years while their case creeps through the system. How crazy is that?

Once you sneak across our border and get caught that should be it ...... no free parking and you do not get to pass go!
