At least 42 Taiwanese who were arrested in Iloilo earlier this month for their alleged involvement in an online fraud ring were deported to Taiwan early Thursday, radio dzBB reported.

The 42 boarded a Taipei-bound Philippine Airlines flight P.R.-896 before 8 a.m., GMA News stringer Ariel Fernandez reported on dzBB radio.

But some of the Taiwanese were initially accosted at the airport after showing symptoms of sore eyes, the report said.

Following a medical checkup, those with symptoms of sore eyes were allowed to board the plane provided they covered their eyes.

Earlier this month, more than 40 Taiwanese were arrested after the Philippine National Police teams raided houses believed used by a ring for cyber-fraud operations in Iloilo.

At the time, GMA Iloilo's Nenita Hobilla reported the Taiwanese were arrested at Imperial 6 Subdivision in Mandurriao District, and in Ledesco Village in La Paz district.

Police cited information indicating the suspects would call up victims in Mainland China and introduce themselves as police personnel, and extort money from them.

The victims were told they would face charges for money laundering unless they transfer money to the suspects' accounts. — Joel Locsin/RSJ, GMA News
