Border Patrol kills man who didn't stop at checkpoint

    Posted: 01.24.2015 at 12:19 PM

EL PASO (AP) -- The U.S. Border Patrol says an agent's shout of "Gun!" led to the fatal shooting of a motorist who drove through a West Texas inspection checkpoint without stopping.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued a statement Friday about the shooting. The agency said it happened around 5 p.m. Thursday, after a motorist pulled into the inspection lane at the Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 10 in Sierra Blanca, about 80 miles southeast of El Paso.

The statement says the man failed to stop, prompting a 30-mile pursuit by Border Patrol agents.

When the vehicle finally stopped, four agents were approaching when one shouted "Gun!" Two agents fired on the motorist, killing him.

The statement says a pistol-shaped pellet gun was recovered from the vehicle.

Checkpoint Runner With Pellet Gun Shot by Border Patrol Agents

    by Ildefonso Ortiz
    25 Jan 2015

Federal authorities are investigating an officer-related shooting where U.S Border Patrol agents killed a suspect who had pulled a pellet gun on them.

The case began at the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint in Sierra Blanca when a man pulled up to it but then drove straight through without stopping, setting off a chase, the AP reported.

The agents pursued the vehicle for about 30 miles until the vehicle stopped and a group of four agents approached him. The man then pulled out a pellet gun, prompting an agent to yell “gun” as two others fired at him, killing him.

Realistic looking pellet and airsoft guns have become a difficult issue for law enforcement, particularly near the Texas border. As Breitbart Texas previously reported, in early January a woman near the border city of Edinburg showed up to the Hidalgo County Jail with an air gun and confronted authorities in an effort to get them to shoot her, in a practice known as “suicide by cop” or “blue suicide.”

    RELATED STORIES

The name of the man shot and killed by U.S. Border Patrol agents last week after he drove through a West Texas checkpoint without stopping was released on Friday. But officials did not release other information about the man.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation identified the man as Tiano Meton, 25. His hometown and other information was not released.

Meton was shot and killed after he drove through a Border Patrol checkpoint at about 5 p.m. on Jan. 22 on Interstate 10 in Sierra Blanca, officials said.

Border Patrol agents pursued the vehicle for about 30 miles before Meton stopped, the Associated Press reported.

Four agents approached the vehicle and one of them yelled "gun," the AP reported. Two of the agents fired their weapons at the vehicle. A pistol-shaped pellet gun was recovered from Meton's vehicle, the AP reported.

None of the agents were injured in the incident.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials declined to comment on the incident, did not identify the agents or say if the agents had placed on administrative duty.

All questions were directed to the FBI, which is in charge of the investigation.

FBI officials only released the name of the man and said no further information could be released because the investigation continues.

No records could be found for a Tiano Meton, but records were found for a man with a same age but a slightly different spelling of the last name in Albuquerque.

FBI spokesman Special Agent Michael Martinez said that the last name was Meton.
