Chamber of Commerce Would Pressure 'President Trump' on Immigration

    Friday, October 7, 2016 05:26 PM

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce says if Donald Trump is elected president, the national business-lobbying group plans to squeeze him to overhaul the country's immigration laws, The Washington Post reports.

"We're going to continue to turn up the heat," Rob Engstrom, its senior vice president and national political director said in an interview for C-SPAN's "Newsmakers" airing on Sunday, according to The Post.

The newspaper says Engstrom's group, sharply critical of Trump's economic policies, is "optimistic" bipartisan agreements can be hammered out on key immigration policy issues, despite the billionaire real-estate tycoon's "inflammatory anti-immigrant rhetoric."

"I would argue on a piecemeal basis there is opportunity in the next Congress, in the next two years, to be able to get substantive things done on immigration reform," Engstrom tells C-SPAN.

"In my private conversations with members of both political parties, on the Senate side and also on the House side, there is agreement on some tenets."

One of the good things about Trump is that he won't be beholding to big business.
