Honduran migrant group of 1,000+ treks north as U.S. calls for tighter borders

Honduran migrant group treks north as U.S. calls for tighter borders

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras (Reuters) - More than 1,000 people, including families and women carrying babies, set off from Honduras toward the United States on Saturday, days after the United States urged Honduras’ president to halt mass migration.

Recent attempts at group crossings from Central America to the United States have tested U.S. President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” stance on illegal immigration, as people fleeing violence and poverty defy threats of deportation.

“I believe we’ll get to the United States. There’s no work in Honduras, and you live in fear that they’re going to kill you or your children,” said Fanny Barahona, 35, an unemployed teacher who walked with her nine-year-old son and carried a two-year-old daughter.

Some 1,300 people joined the so-called “March of the Migrant,” planning to walk from San Pedro Sula in northern Honduras through Guatemala and into Mexico, organizer Bartolo Fuentes said. Once in Mexico, they plan to request refugee status to remain in the country or a visa to pass through to the U.S. border, he said.

In April, media attention on a similar group of migrants, dubbed a “caravan,” prompted Trump to press for tougher border security and demand such groups be refused entry. Most in the caravan said they were fleeing death threats, extortion and violence from powerful street gangs.

More than 64 percent of Honduran households live in poverty, and San Pedro Sula has one of the world’s highest murder rates.

“There is no work and so much violence that you can get killed walking down the street,” said Javier Solis, 25, who said he has not found work in a year and wants to enter the United States. On a previous attempt, he was deported to Honduras upon reaching Mexico.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence met with the presidents of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador in Washington on Thursday and told them the United States would be willing to help with economic development and investment if they did more to tackle migration, corruption and gang violence.

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez said U.S. funding was declining, and he called on the United States to reunite migrant children with their parents after Washington’s policy of separating families trying to cross the U.S.-Mexican border put Honduras under “huge pressure.”

Deploy buses to apprehend them, load them up and send them BACK!

No work in Chicago and people get killed in the street all them time!

Reunite THEIR children back on their soil. Get them out!

Hundreds of Hondurans head for US border in mass migration 'march': report

By Paulina Dedaj | Fox News

Hundreds of Honduran migrants are headed for the United States border, just days after Vice President Pence sat down with the Central American country’s leader, urging him to take a tougher stance on mass migrations.

At least 1,300 people, including young children, left San Pedro Sula in northern Honduras on Saturday, in what some are calling the “March of the Migrant,” Reuters reported.

Bartolo Fuentes, the organizer, told the news agency that the group plans to march through Guatemala and into Mexico. From there, participants will request refugee status, which would allow them to stay in the country, or they will apply for a visa to pass through into the U.S.

The development came just days after Pence met with Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, President Jimmy Morales of Guatemala and Vice President Oscar Ortiz of El Salvador, asking them to step up and help combat illegal immigration in return for help from the U.S.

Pence addressed the three leaders on Thursday in Washington, at the Conference for Prosperity and Security in Central America.

"If you do more, I'm here to say on behalf of the president of the United States and the American people, we'll do more," he said.

Pence said that flows of illegal immigrants from Honduras and Guatemala are up 61 percent and 75 percent, respectively.

According to the Reuters report, 64 percent of Honduran households live in poverty. Many of the migrants are fleeing a poor economy and some of the highest crime rates in the world.

Hernandez told Pence he would like more certainty about what to expect from the United States, because the funds requested by the Trump administration are below allocations from previous years.

The Trump administration proposed $460 million in assistance last year, 30 percent less than what Congress approved in 2016 under President Barack Obama.

Mass migrations have become a growing problem at the border. In May, almost 200 migrants from Central America attempted to seek asylum in the U.S. after traveling with a caravan of over 1,000 migrants.

Don't let them in. It's a very simple solution. Just tell them there is no condition in Honduras that warrants "asylum" in the United States. Therefore any attempt to enter the US without proper permission documents will be treated as an attempt to enter the US illegally and will be resisted with force if necessary and you will be turned away.

You let them in, they will be soon be released, no where to detain them long enough for a deportation hearing because DOJ can't keep up. SAD!! Don't let them in to begin with. Tell Mexico to come pick 'em up and deport them back to Honduras with the $20 million we're giving them to do that.

The phrase "unemployed teacher" sums it up. There is only so much economic advantage you can get out of SERVICE INDUSTRIES. There is definitely plenty of human capital and, I have no doubt, access to raw materials, to create plenty of economic opportunity there.

Warmer countries have much better agricultural conditions than the northern climates. How about some community gardens---which could grow food year around there, instead of just a third of the year, like here? And then these countries have lots of experience in durable building materials. I just saw some historic photos last week about my own city----where a lot of the early wood structures had become severely deteriorated after a few decades. When they put Interstate 5 through they tore down a lot of these places---and they were firetraps and rodent traps and cockroach traps due to the molding wood structures and were ready to come down anyway. Latin America, OTOH, has specialized in concrete construction for many decades, plus they know how to make other, long lasting masonry products.

Maybe this teacher is the product of some do-gooder foreign mission that thought they would improve the people through knowledge alone.
