A Mundelein man is in federal custody after local police found dozens of fake identification cards at his home, authorities said.

The man's name has not been released and he has not yet been charged.

Mundelein Police Sgt. John Monahan said a search of the man's home uncovered fake driver's licenses and Social Security cards, a software program used for making documents, laminating equipment and special tools used to cut documents.

"The quality of the documents was very good," Monahan said. He said authorities don't know how long the man may have been making the IDs, though they suspect he had a "pretty large clientele."

It was the arrest of another man that led police to the suspect. On March 11, another man was pulled over in Mundelein for minor traffic violations, Monahan said. During a search of the driver's car, police found a permanent resident card with the driver's photo on it and someone else's name. The driver told police where he bought the fake ID.

Monahan said an undercover officer then met with the seller and bought a fake driver's license. Police arrested the seller and turned him over to federal authorities, Monahan said.
