McALLEN — A Dominican man punched a U.S. Border Patrol agent in a brushy area south of Pharr, agents said in a criminal complaint filed Tuesday.

Llevry Ramon Herrera on Monday went before U.S. Magistrate Judge Dorina Ramos, who formally charged him with assaulting a federal officer and ordered he be held without bond pending a detention hearing later this week.

FBI agents said in a criminal complaint that agents responded to an area south of Pharr about 9:45 a.m. Sunday, where about six men were running through the brush.

One of the agents tried to stop Herrera, who punched the agent on the left side of his face, stunning him, according to the complaint.

The Border Patrol agent pulled Herrera to the ground, where the two fought, the complaint states. Herrera reached for the agent’s baton and eventually tore away his radio, tossing it into the brush.

Herrera managed to escape, but other Border Patrol agents caught him later that morning and took him to the Weslaco Border Patrol station, where the assaulted agent identified Herrera, the complaint states.
