Officers have arrested a Mexican man accused of illegally crossing the border for the sixth time.

Police arrested Luis Hernandez-Ramirez -- a Mexican citizen apparently living in Donna -- on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to Hidalgo County jail records.

After serving eight days in the county jail, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers picked Hernandez up on Friday.

"Record checks revealed the defendant was formally removed from the United States to Mexico for the fifth (5th) time on November 26, 2014, via the Laredo, Texas Port of Entry," according to the federal criminal complaint against him.

Hernandez returned to the United States about two months later.

"The defendant claims to have illegally re-entered the United States on or about January 26, 2015, by wading the Rio Grande River at or near Brownsville Texas," according to the criminal complaint.

He's now charged with illegal re-entry.

Court records don't list an attorney for Hernandez, who remains in federal custody.
