Mexico-Aided Activists Work to Reform U.S. Immigration

(This is why the Foreign Agents Registration Act needs to enforced before our Congress. The FARA was intended to preclude any lobbying on behalf of "foreign principals" unless the lobbyists were duly registered. IMO, this has been a severe breach in our balance of powers ideal.)

Mexico-Aided Activists Work to Reform U.S. Immigration

    By Barnard R. Thompson

A November 11 special bulletin sent by the Mexican government's Institute for Mexicans Abroad, which is under the jurisdiction of the Secretariat of Foreign Relations, said in part:

"Mexican immigrants in the United States, from almost all states of the Union, decided today to begin the formation of a National Coalition in order to work towards immigration reform for undocumented immigrants, of all nationalities, in the United States.

"The immigrants initiating this movement have been advisory council members of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME) for three years, and before ending their council terms they have decided to organize in order to develop an open Coalition that would promote the organization, and include in this movement all groups of various nationalities, forming alliances with unions, churches, national organizations, business associations, artists, athletes, etc.

"The immigrant leaders resolved to return to their organizations and communities in the United States where they will call their memberships together in order to initiate a national movement to demand, of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, legislation that would grant residency to more than 12 million undocumented immigrants of all nationalities, with more than 50 percent being Mexicans. Immigration reforms that [would] reunite families now divided, with some members outside of the United States, are being sought. As well, it will seek permission for the legal and orderly entry, according to the needs of the United States, of seasonal [guest] workers who would also have the option to apply for permanent residency.

"Immigrant leaders are hoping for legalization in the fall of 2009, knowing that in the past elections they mobilized millions of Latinos and Mexicans in the United States in order to cast their votes. As well, although they will have to convince a certain number of Republican senators and representatives, they expect President-elect Barack Obama to support immigration reform as of the first year of his administration, given that 67 percent of Latinos voted for him, 78 percent of immigrants with U.S citizenship voted for him, and 83 percent of Mexican immigrants with citizenship voted for him."

    Repatriated Mexicans and Unemployment

Getting back to the Mexican Congress, César Duarte Jáquez (PRI, Chihuahua), the current president of the Chamber of Deputies, told the daily Milenio (November 19) that Mexico's stability is at risk due to unemployment.

Unemployment, as well as organized crime and the violence that is taking place, puts the country at risk of social explosions and unrest, he said.

Thus, Duarte called on the Secretariat of National Defense "to apply intelligence instruments in order to be able to anticipate these types of issues that are permanently hanging over the country."
