If You’re A Minority In America, The Terror Of This Moment Is Overwhelming

We need to feel that pain of this moment. And we need to take care of each other.

Waking up today felt like waking up from a fever dream.

Over the past 18 months, minorities have endured an immense amount of collective trauma throughout the course of this long, arduous presidential campaign.

Many of us have faced threats to the very core of our identities and beliefs, compounding the pain of this moment even more.

And now, the man who lobbied all of those threats against us is set to hold the highest office in the developed world.

As a queer person who left the American South four years ago to escape the kind of bigotry that laid the foundation for Trump to ascend to the presidency, I am utterly terrified.

I’m terrified for my fellow LGBTQ brothers, sisters and siblings, who now face the prospect of the most anti-LGBTQ platform in the Republican party’s history.

What does it mean that conversion therapy is literally a part of the platform? What does it mean that the vehemently anti-queer Mike Pence now holds the vice presidency? Will the Supreme Court overturn marriage equality? What’s going to happen to us?

I’m terrified for the people of color in this country who just endured the most blatantly racist presidential campaign in recent memory, on top of the daily horrors and struggles of being a POC in this country. What does this mean for the future of racial minorities in America? Our new president is blatantly out of touch with the needs of the most vulnerable members of our population. What does it mean to have a man endorsed by the KKK win this race in 2016? What kind of message are young kids of color receiving about the world they will come of age in?

I fear for immigrants, for the people who have been the primary targets of Trump’s xenophobic comments throughout the course of this campaign. Will Trump actually ban Muslims from entering the United States? Will he build the wall along the Mexican border? Will white nationalism continue to rise?

And I’m terrified for the women in my life who, once again, are receiving the message that men can say and do whatever they want to women and their bodies without consequence. In fact, there are no limits to what these men can achieve in the Western world even if they wear their misogyny like a badge of honor ― including becoming president. What message does this send to young women about agency they have over their bodies? About what they can achieve in this world in the face of the patriarchy? What’s going to happen to us all?

This is a time for us to feel our terror, feel our pain and to mourn.

Soon, we will get back up, and fight against this new set of challenges ― fight against the embodiment of bigotry and hatred that will soon ascend to the presidency and take our country in a direction that none of us can predict.

But for now, let us feel the sheer terror of that prospect ― and take care of one another as we turn and face the unknown.

I hope they hurry up with the US Supreme Court nominations.

Yes I agree as there are going to be many court cases as a result of the election. Also with regards to how we are to remove the illegals. This is not about minority Americans it is about illegal aliens. They have been bringing this up through the whole election and still do not get it. I say cut off the money and they will self deport. Unfortunately we may need the court to do even that.
