Survey: Mandatory E-Verify has employer support

by THE HR SPECIALIST on APRIL 7, 2017 10:00AM
    in HIRING,HUMAN RESOURCES

Employers overwhelmingly support mandatory use of E-Verify, the government’s electronic employment eligibility verification system, according to a new survey by the Society for Human Resource Management and its affiliate, the Council for Global Immigration.

The backing for E-Verify comes as the Trump administration begins a crackdown on illegal immigration. The White House’s fiscal year 2018 federal budget proposal includes funding to support mandatory use of E-Verify.

The SHRM survey, conducted in late March, found that 83% of employers either “strongly” or “somewhat” would support a mandatory electronic verification system.

The current employment verification process, the Form I-9, uses paper documentation to verify employment eligibility of people seeking work in the United States. It is mandatory for all employers.

E-Verify relies on Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security databases to confirm that individuals are authorized to work in the United States. Learn more about the online E-Verify system at www.uscis.gov/e-verify.

The use of E-Verify is already mandatory for federal contractors and subcontractors, and 21 states and localities require the use of E-Verify for some or all employers.

I seem to recall Trump mentioning the strengthening of E-Verify during his campaign, but I don't remember him promising to make it mandatory nationally for every single employer. Maybe he did say that and I missed it. Whatever the case, I'd love to see him push to make it mandatory.
