After she was discharged from the hospital, Mrs. Villegas was separated from her nursing infant for two days and barred from taking a breast pump into the jail, her lawyer and a doctor familiar with the case said. Her breasts became infected, and the newborn boy developed jaundice, they said

Causes of newborn jaundice, which is quite common in infants: two of mine developed it and not breast feeding had nothing to do with it.

    Newborn Jaundice Causes

In most cases, jaundice is not preventable

Jaundice in newborns most commonly occurs because their livers are not mature enough to remove bilirubin from the blood. Jaundice may also be caused by a number of other medical conditions.

Physiologic jaundice is the most common form of newborn jaundice. The baby's liver plays the most important part in bilirubin breakdown. The type of bilirubin that causes the yellow discoloration of jaundice is called unconjugated bilirubin. This form of bilirubin is not easily removed from the baby's body. The baby's liver changes this unconjugated bilirubin into conjugated bilirubin, which is easier for the baby's body to remove. The livers of newborn babies are immature. They are not able to perform this job very efficiently at first. The combination of these 2 problems causes an elevation of bilirubin, and this is seen as the yellow discoloration of the baby's skin. As the breakdown of red blood cells slows down, and the baby's liver matures, the jaundice rapidly disappears. When jaundice is due to these factors alone, it is termed physiologic jaundice.

Neonatal jaundice will be seen in cases of maternal-fetal blood type incompatibility. The mother's body will actually produce antibodies that attack the fetus's blood cells. This causes a breakdown of the red blood cells and thus an increased release of bilirubin from the red cells.

Healthy red blood cells can be destroyed in a condition called hemolysis.

Polycythemia is a condition in which a child is born with an excess of red blood cells.

A large scalp bruise called a cephalohematoma can occur during the birthing process. Such a bruise is really a collection of clotted blood just beneath the skin surface. As the body naturally breaks down this clotted blood, a large amount of bilirubin is released at once. This sudden excess in serum bilirubin may be too much for the baby's liver to handle, and jaundice will develop.

Sometimes a baby swallows blood during birth. This swallowed blood is broken down in the baby's intestines and absorbed into the bloodstream. Just as the excess blood from a blood clot will cause a rise in serum bilirubin, so will this.

A mother who has diabetes may cause a baby to develop neonatal jaundice.

Crigler-Najjar syndrome and Lucey-Driscoll syndrome are also conditions that can cause jaundice.

A condition called carotenemia also causes a yellowish discoloration of the skin.

The skin color in this condition tends to be a darker orange than seen with jaundice.

Eating a lot of yellow vegetables causes this condition.

Children with carotenemia have normal bilirubin levels.

Unlike jaundice, carotenemia does not cause a discoloration of the white part of the eyes.

This condition causes no harm and requires no treatment

As for her breast infection......too bad. She's not the first, she won't be the last to end up with a clogged milk duct and there's nothing to say that it happened because she was unable to nurse or was denied a breast pump in jail. Since lactation actually starts well before birth, she most likely had developed the clogged duct and infection prior to when her milk came in but the engorgement brought on the symptoms.

Why doesn't this woman just shut up, put on her big girl pants, quit whining and face up to the consequences of her own criminal actions.

I'm tired of listening to it............

School board candidate Coleman arresting officer in controversial 287(g) case
    By: By Amy Griffith, agriffith@nashvillecitypaper

A local school board candidate was the arresting officer in an 287(g)-related incident reported by The New York Times over the weekend.

Tim Coleman, who is running against incumbent Mark North in Madison’s District 3 race, is an officer for the Berry Hill Police Department. According to information provided by the department, Coleman on July 3 arrested Juana Villegas — an illegal immigrant who had been deported from the United States in 1996 — after pulling her over for careless driving.

Sheriff’s Office defends treatment of woman who gave birth while in custody

Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall's office says immigrants' advocates have distorted the story of a woman who gave birth while in police custody. File
The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office defended its treatment of a woman who was found to be an illegal immigrant living in Nashville after a routine traffic stop and later gave birth while in custody earlier this month.

Responding to a story published over the weekend in the New York Times, the Sheriff’s Office said it treated Juana Villegas DeLaPaz appropriately after she was jailed on July 3 for driving without a license.

Karla Weickal, the office’s director of communications, said DeLaPaz was treated as any other prisoner would have been if she were to go into labor while in custody.

Weickal also said that immigrants’ advocates have distorted the story.

“Advocates have sensationalized the circumstances to further their cause,â€

Illegal Immigrant Who Gave Birth In Custody Loses Appeal

    Posted: Nov 11, 2010 1:07 PM PST

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - An illegal immigrant who gained national attention when she gave birth in Metro Police custody has lost another appeal to stay in the country.

The U.S. 6th District Court of Appeals refused to review a deportation order issued against Juana Villegas.

Her attorney said their next move is to seek a hearing with the entire panel of 6th Circuit judges, and if that fails, they'll ask the U.S. Supreme Court to hear her case.

Villegas, a Mexican national, was nine months pregnant in 2008 when Metro police pulled her over, and jailed her for not having a driver's license.

She later gave birth in custody and claimed she was shackled before, during, and after the delivery.

Villegas was deported once before back in 1997 and re-entered the country illegally.

Azwreath you are so right about the nurses. These people see horrible illnesses and death daily and keep there emotions in check, Yet they just lose it when this 33 year old woman gives birth. And then they hint around that the little anchor was busy starving to death cause they would not let her breastfeed. I did not breastfeed, I was given a pill as I am sure she was, and I was not ever in anything you could call real pain. Cant the liberal press ever tell a story without lying? Ever?

On a fast plane to Mexico, would have been the best and most cost effective solution.

Allowing another anchor baby, is just wrong.
