The US on Sunday said it has pulled out of Global Compact on Migration, arguing that the Obama-era negotiated UN deal contains numerous provisions that are “inconsistent” with its immigration and refugee policies and the Trump Administration’s immigration principles.

“President Trump determined that the US would end its participation in the Compact process that aims to reach international consensus at the UN in 2018,” the US Mission to the United Nations said in a statement.
Earlier, the mission informed the UN Secretary-General about the US decision to end its participation in the Global Compact on Migration.

US participation in the Compact process began in 2016, following the Obama Administration’s decision to join the UN’s New York Declaration on migration.

“The New York Declaration contains numerous provisions that are inconsistent with US immigration and refugee policies and the Trump Administration’s immigration principles,” it said.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said America is proud of its immigrant heritage and its long-standing moral leadership in providing support to migrant and refugee populations across the globe.

No country has done more than the United States, and its generosity will continue, she said.

“But our decisions on immigration policies must always be made by Americans and Americans alone.

We will decide how best to control our borders and who will be allowed to enter our country. The global approach in the New York Declaration is simply not compatible with US sovereignty,” she said.

Under the Trump administration, the US has pulled out of several global commitments including the UN culture and education body, UNESCO, and the Paris climate change agreement. PTI

REPORT: Trump to Pull U.S. From U.N. Migration Compact

The Trump Administration announced plans to pull the U.S. out of a United Nations pact on the handling of migrant and refugee situations. The announcement came from the U.S. mission to the United Nations. U.S. officials said the program is “inconsistent” with American policies.

“Today, the US Mission to the United Nations informed the UN Secretary-General that the United States is ending its participation in the Global Compact on Migration,” U.S. officials said in a report from AFP.

Officials stated that the New York Declaration, a non-binding political declaration unanimously approved in a non-binding resolution in September 2016, “contains numerous provisions that are inconsistent with U.S. immigration and refugee policies and the Trump Administration’s immigration principles.”

The American pullout from the pact is scheduled for the end of 2018, AFP reported.

Ambassador Nikki Haley said the U.S. will continue in its “generosity” by supporting migrants and refugees around the world.

The withdrawal is consistent with the president’s America First policies.

“We will decide how best to control our borders and who will be allowed to enter our country,” Haley stated. “The global approach in the New York Declaration is simply not compatible with US sovereignty.”

This is the second U.N. accord from which the new administration has withdrawn.

In August, President Trump notified the U.N. that the U.S. intends to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, Breitbart News’ Adam Shaw reported.

“As the President indicated in his June 1 announcement and subsequently, he is open to re-engaging in the Paris Agreement if the United States can identify terms that are more favorable to it, its businesses, its workers, its people, and its taxpayers,” State Department officials said in a written statement.

United States Ends Participation in Global Compact on Migration

    December 2, 2017

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Today, the U.S. Mission to the United Nations informed the UN Secretary-General that the United States is ending its participation in the Global Compact on Migration.

U.S. participation in the Compact process began in 2016, following the Obama Administration’s decision to join the UN’s New York Declaration on migration. The New York Declaration contains numerous provisions that are inconsistent with U.S. immigration and refugee policies and the Trump Administration’s immigration principles. As a result, President Trump determined that the United States would end its participation in the Compact process that aims to reach international consensus at the UN in 2018.

Ambassador Nikki Haley, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, issued the following statement:

“America is proud of our immigrant heritage and our long-standing moral leadership in providing support to migrant and refugee populations across the globe. No country has done more than the United States, and our generosity will continue. But our decisions on immigration policies must always be made by Americans and Americans alone. We will decide how best to control our borders and who will be allowed to enter our country. The global approach in the New York Declaration is simply not compatible with U.S. sovereignty.”
