Update: According to the latest AFP reports, the shooting which has left at least 2 dead, is being treated as a terrorist attack. According to the French interior minister, the shooter has been identified and as known for "criminal reasons".

The identified shooter was still at large shortly after 9 p.m., and local police were asking residents in the center of the city to remain inside. The shooting occurred around 8 p.m., news broadcaster LCI reported, citing local security people.
    Earlier:

At least two people are dead and nine have been wounded following a shooting near a Christmas market in the French city of Strasbourg, home to the European Parliament, according to multiple reports.

The incident reportedly happened close to the world-famous market -which attracts two million tourists a year - in bustling Place Kleber.
The shooter is said to have fled the scene according to AFP, while police have asked people to stay at home amid the manhunt.
According to local newspaper DNA, the incident is assumed to be a terrorist attack.
According to the local newspaper @dnatweets, shooting incident in #Strasbourg assumed as a "terrorist attack". Shooter alone and still on the run. Last toll: 3 killed, 6 to 7 wounded.

After the shooting, the city is now on total lockdown with police armed with machine guns on the street and people taking cover in bars and restaurants. Security officials have cordoned off the market area and all trams have been stopped, according to reports from the scene.
Access to city center was blocked for pedestrians, cyclists and road traffic about three blocks from the Kleber main square near the opera house. Blue emergency-services lights could be seen several hundred meters away at the other end of nearby Place Broglie.
The European Parliament in Strasbourg activated its emergency protocol and was in lockdown with the orders "no one goes in, no one goes out." The parliament was closed, with no one able to leave until further notice, spokesman Jaume Duchsaid in a tweet.
“The shooting happened in front of us,” EU lawmaker Nikos Androulakis said by phone from a cafeteria near the area. “As I was leaving the cafe, I ’ve heard shootings, police took us inside, and we are now in lockdown with lights off. They told us the perpetrators are still at large. There are families, small children in here,” Androulakis said.
As Reuters notes: "France remains on high alert after suffering a wave of attacks commissioned or inspired by Islamic State militants in 2015 and 2016, which killed more than 200 people."

Three dead after Christmas market terrorist attack in Strasbourg

Another "Known Wolf" terrorist who was on the terror watch list.

    December 12, 2018
    By Rick Moran

One of Europe's most famous Christmas markets in Strasbourg, France was the scene of a horrific terrorist attack as a gunman sprayed automatic weapon fire into the crowd.
At least three people are dead and another dozen wounded in what French authorities have been reluctant to describe as a Muslim terror attack.
This despite several witnesses reporting that the shooter, Cherif Chekatt, shouted "Allahu akbar" during the attack and authorities admitting he was on the French terrorist watch list.
    CBSNews:
French police union officials confirmed on Wednesday to the Associated Press that the suspect was 29-year-old Cherif Chekatt, a Strasbourg resident with a police record in France and Germany who had been flagged for extremism. His name had been widely reported by French media.
Paris prosecutor Remi Heitz said Wednesday that witnesses reported hearing the gunman shout "Allahu Akbar," Arabic for "God is great," during the attack. Prosecutors have launched a terrorism investigation into the shooting, but authorities have not yet confirmed a motive for the bloodshed.
If the guy had been a far-right nationalist nut job, do you think authorities would have been able to "confirm a motive" for the attack?
"Considering the target, his way of operating, his profile and the testimonies of those who heard him yell 'Allahu Akbar,' the anti-terrorist police have been called into action," Heitz said.
Strasbourg Mayor Ronald Ries was less ambiguous, declaring on Wednesday that what happened in his city, "was undisputably [sic] a terrorist attack."
Police detained five people in overnight searches around the city, Laurent Nunez, secretary of state for the Interior Ministry, said on France-Inter radio. The hunt for Chekatt continued, however.
A law enforcement source told CBS News on Tuesday that the attacker used a long gun in his siege on the Christmas market. His home was raided Tuesday morning in relation to a previous murder investigation, but officers failed to apprehend him in that raid.
Nunez said eight of the injured were in serious condition, and the city mayor said some had head wounds.
France is already on edge from social unrest in the streets, and this won't help any. In fact, it may contribute to the sense that government doesn't care about ordinary people. President Macron's approval rating has already hit rock bottom at 18%. It's going to drop even farther as evidence of incompetence from the security services emerges.
Chekatt was known to authorities as an extremist, they knew where he lived, they knew he was involved in other crimes, and they knew he was a threat. Not to have eyes on this guy is extraordinarily lax. What good is a terrorist "watch list" if you're not watching them?
The media are playing their usual games: he who shall not be named practicing a religion that cannot be spoken of. I suppose a white nationalist could scream "Allahu akbar" when firing into a crowd of innocent civilians, but it hasn't happened yet.
Checkatt has no known connection to ISIS, but terrorist message boards and chat rooms are full of congratulations. The terrorist group has promised attacks this Christmas season. Let's hope it's blowing hot air, and this is the last one.

'Still At Large' - Strasbourg Shooting Suspect Convicted 27 Times Before, Yelled "Allahu Akbar"

All told, the public prosecutor said the suspect has been convicted 27 times in France, Germany and Switzerland...

French police have detained five people in connection with Tuesday's deadly attack on a popular Christmas Market in the French city of Strasbourg - which unfolded only a few blocks away from the European Parliament. However, the shooter, who was reportedly wounded in the attack before commandeering a taxi to make his escape, remains at large, and French authorities worry that he may have fled to neighboring Germany, according to the Financial Times.
Some 350 police and gendarmes are actively searching for the suspect. France has issued an "urgence attentat" (emergency attack) alert, which temporarily expands police powers and forces officers to maintain "a higher degree of vigilance," according to the BBC. Police said they had cordoned off areas in the south of the city and tightened border controls. Meanwhile, Paris prosecutors have launched a murder investigation as well as a probe into "attempted murder in relation with a terrorist enterprise."
The first shots rang out in Strasbourg's city center at around 8 pm local time (1 pm ET). A French prosecutor said the suspect shouted "Allahu Akbar" - 'God is great' in Arabic - during the shooting.

The mayor of Strasbourg, Roland Ries, said the Christmas market will be closed on Wednesday and flags lowered to half-mast at the local town hall. The shooting unfolded during a regular session of the European Parliament, which is situated roughly 1.5 miles from the city center where the shooting unfolded. Some 2,000 MEPs and their staff were ordered to remain inside the building for hours.
European Parliament President Antonio Tajani declared the assembly would not "be intimidated by terrorist or criminal attack." "Let us move on. We will continue to work and react strengthened by freedom and democracy against terrorist violence."

Little information about the suspected gunman has been released. Still, an unconfirmed photo of what's believed to be the attacker has circulated on social media.

The most recent casualty count put the death toll at three, while 13 people were wounded, eight of them seriously, according to the BBC (though it's worth noting that the body count varied between media outlets).
Here's a brief rundown of what we know about the attacker (text courtesy of RT and the Guardian):

    • The suspect, Cherif Chekatt, 29, was born and raised in Strasbourg
    • His activities within the local radical Islamic community raised red flags and he had been added to a terror watch list
    • He was known as a potential security risk
    • The 29-year-old was sent to jail by a court in the German town of Singen for a violent robbery in Germany. After serving the sentence, Chekatt, a French national with North African roots, was deported back to France in 2017
    • He has also spent time in prison in France and is believed to have been radicalized in prison. He has been described as "notorious" to police, with a long criminal record
    • All told, the public prosecutor said the suspect has been convicted 27 times in France, Germany and Switzerland
    • Police had intended to arrest Chekatt in connection with an armed robbery hours before he allegedly opened fire on the Christmas market – but he was nowhere to be found when they raided his home. Police did, however, discover a grenade
    • Investigators are still working to establish a motive in the attack
    • The suspect fired three separate volleys into the crowds at the Christmas market then engaged twice with patrolling soldiers from Opération Sentinelle, a nationwide security operation established after a series of terrorist attacks in Paris in 2015

The Strasbourg attacked unfolded during a period of tension when France is still struggling with violent demonstrations against the government of Emmanuel Macron. It was also the latest in a string of terror attacks in France and neighboring countries, including a 2016 assault on a Christmas market in Berlin.
Finally, and for good measure, President Trump saw fit to chime in on the wall...

    Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

Another very bad terror attack in France. We are going to strengthen our borders even more. Chuck and Nancy must give us the votes to get additional Border Security!

    A new 'Frenchman'?

Much is being made of the Strasbourg Christmas market terror attack being committed by a "native" Frenchman. The second-generation Muslim son of migrants was technically that, but...

    December 13, 2018
    By Don Sucher

The E.U. media are making a thing over the fact that Cherif Chekatt, the on-the-run terrorist who perpetrated the Strasbourg mass shooting, was born in France and was not an "immigrant."
Yes, he was known to authorities as a dangerously militant Muslim extremist. Yet he was, they are telling the people, a native Frenchman.
In truth, that should not be a comfort to anyone, nor is it an effective argument for those who favor allowing a nearly endless crowd of migrants from North Africa and the Middle East into Europe.
In fact it really shows the danger in doing so.
This is a lesson the U.K. has had before it now for a couple of generations. (Not a lesson they have learned, mind you.) Those first-generation "Asian" (the word used in the U.K. to describe such as Pakistan Muslims) immigrants who have come to the U.K. often are at least at first appreciative of the welcome given them and the opportunities it has opened for them. It is not they, but their children who most often become extremists – hating the nation in which they were born, but with which they share few values.
That, too, is France's problem. And Germany's, and Sweden's, and Belgium's, and the Netherlands', etc.
These European nations are behind the U.K. in the timeline – large and rapidly growing Muslim populations are for them something relatively new in modern times. But such are already forming communities of their own – taking over housing developments, entire neighborhoods, and in some cases most of entire smaller cities. Their children are anything but the "new Frenchmen" or "new Swedes" the media like to speak of.
In truth, these second-generation citizens, born of migrants, often see themselves as angry outsiders who wish to see their own foreign culture become the dominant one in their new land. Some of them are willing to do whatever it takes to help bring that about – even commit mass murder.
That is the lesson, to the extent there is one, in Cherif Chekatt's hideous rampage.
Will the French, or the Germans or the Belgians or the Swedes (etc.), learn this? Not if those currently in power in the E.U. have their way.
Make of that what you will.

Strasbourg Chrismas Market Gunman Shot Dead By French Police

Update: The man suspected of committing Tuesday's shooting has been "shot dead" following a police operation which began at approximately 9pm local time, reports Sky News.

Two police sources confirmed to Reuters that the 29-year-old was killed in the Neudorf-Meinau area of the city after a police operation was launched at around 9pm local time.
Earlier, witnesses reported "at least three" gunshots were heard in the district and a police helicopter was seen hovering overhead.

Dozens of police from France's elite RAID counterterrorism unit cordoned off an area of southern Strasbourg on Thursday close to where a gunman who attacked the city's Christmas market was last seen, according to an AFP reporter at the scene.

French officials have not confirmed that the operation is linked to the Tuesday shooting that left three people dead and 13 injured, including one person rendered brain dead.
