Is it Better We Stay In The War Than to Get Out?

It seems that the war and the judges they might appoint are the only real differences between Obama and McCain from the way I see it.

The part about the judges seems very important to me and I know that the war is too.

But what I'd like to more CLEARLY understand is why exactly we should remain in Iraq.

Is it likely that sooner or later we will be in a war with Iran?

It's all becoming a big blur to me to where I can't even figure out what to be for and what to be against anymore.

I'm wondering if we could politely discuss the facts regarding this.

I believe that illegal immigration is an integral part of the whole big picture due to the issue of our security, so I'm asking this question about the war and the Middle East in general feeling that it is appropriate and alright to do so.

Thank you for your opinions and any facts and important information you have which might help me to better understand all of this and come to some stronger conclusions.

I supported the war 100% until I found out we had been lied to about why we got involved. Its kind of late now, we owe it to those people to repair the damage we did and get them back on their feet so they can run their own country. That is the only ethical thing to do in my opinion. However, that being said, I do think we need to set up some type of a realistic time line to have our troops out of there. It sure shouldn't take 100 years as McCain suggested he would be willing to stay.

With a loved one serving there now, I have mixed feelings. I want a very SAFE and slow pull out -- just so no one gets hurt unecessarily. This immediate pull out stuff is just irresponsible, unrealistic, and radically dangerous.

Remember, there are those of us w/ spouses serving there -- and we have families we are raising on our own, alone. We just want our loved ones back, safe. I don't CARE about the costs, at this point. Just want him back safely.

There are politicial realities to a hastened pull out. I think we should stay the course as long as is feasible, then return out troops and switch to a policy that does not misuse them in the future.

But for now, we're there, and need to finish the job. I could take longer than expected, but as Americans, we always want the quick fix.

The other thing is, we don't hear the good news. Violence is way down and progress is being made. Negotiations are going through and Iraqis ARE taking on more -- it's just that we don't hear it through our MSM filter, and the leftists keep on putting out the same drivel about what a failure it is.

If we could just get the FACTS about the war, I feel Americans could make better decisions about not only the war, but about everything in general.

As a Vietnam vet I always support our troops however I do not understand our current policies of nation building, if necessary to go to war do so with extreme force once their military is destroyed remove American troops from the area otherwise you convert troops into policemen and social workers and that is what we have now we send troops out daily to trip bombs not fight a uniformed enemy.

The idea of America being the world police needs to end we have over 700 military bases around the world, think of the money wasted that could be used here building schools, hospitals, roads. The huge cost alone of Iraq is staggering and yet McCain talks of staying 100 years.

America is in trouble our government appears to be totally controlled by large corporations, we outsource jobs, ship manufacturing plants to the third world and we import millions of poor under educated people by the millions. While certainly it continues to make money for those at the top it is slowly killing our country.

I'm all for protecting our country with force but only when attacked and we have a confirmed target or enemy but we first need to seal our borders ports and have limited controlled immigrations only then will the USA recover.
I'm old with many opinions few solutions.

Obama has talked about expanding the war into Pakistan, while McCain has talked about expanding the war into Iran. I am not so sure their core philosophies are all that different. I think the D.C. influences that Obama has already surrounded himself with (Brzezinski, for example) will make war in the McCain presidency vs. war in the Obama presidency very similar.

The larger concern is the long term effects these wars are having on our country. From the very beginning, bin Laden's stated goal was to bankrupt the U.S. So far this is working, in large part because we are spending so much money overseas. His strategy worked well on the U.S.S.R. in Afghanistan, and it is working quite well here. We have to borrow $3 billion from foreigners every business day to maintain our spending. China is our largest debtor, I believe. We also print $600B per year to keep the money coming. The biggest loser in all of this is the average American citizen. With more money in circulation, the purchasing power of the dollar decreases. Your life savings are worth less as a direct result.

At the end of the day, you have to ask whether it is in America's long term interests to keep pouring money into Iraq (which was not involved with 9/11 and did not have WMD), while expanding into Iran and/or Pakistan. That has become the question. Is it worth the money, manpower, resources, and dissent? These very things are why the founders said no entangling foreign alliances. It was not to keep us from fighting; it was to keep us from squandering our resources across the world. Rome and France overextended themselves. As a result. they lost everything.

I have heard modern day America compared to the spendthrift rich heir who sells off his assets to maintain the illusion of prosperity. I think that's about right. We have foreign countries funding our wars, and one day their confidence that we are "good for the check" is going to weaken. When that happens, we're going to take a visible hit in our standard of living. The real question is whether it is going to be a slow receeding of prosperity or an outright crash.

The following 'snapshots' have stuck with me through the course of the war in Iraq:

Border agents recruited for Iraq duty

The U.S. State Department has asked Virginia-based DynCorp International to find 120 people with Customs and Border Enforcement experience to go to Iraq for the training.

Report: Military Not Ready for US Attack

The U.S. military isn't ready for a catastrophic attack on the country, and National Guard forces don't have the equipment or training they need for the job, according to a report.

We haven't even declared war since World War II. Considering that we haven't won outright since 1945, I would say that issue deserves exploration by the American people.

Six months ago, I would have said war with Iran was inevitable. The people in D.C. want it to happen. Now with the intelligence report that said Iran hasn't worked on its nuclear weapons program since 2003, the push for war has temporarily abated. I think we'll see tensions flare up again in about two or three years, and the war drums will begin beating again.

    jjmm,

I too have loved ones in the ME and they are tired since this is their 3rd. deployments. It seems to continue the war our next President must start the draft again.

I too thought we must stay and rebuild what we destroyed,it is the ethical thing to do.

My thoughts have changed because the government of Iraq seems to be setting on their hands doing nothing to help their people. The country is fractured into groups and how do we fix that ? I don't think we can.

imo We mus bring our troops home, put the troops on our borders and ports to truely protect Americans.

America comes first and I believe we are bankrupt because our President LIED to us.It seems he wants to stay there to enrich the war machine profiteers while scaring the Americans with his terroist attack BS.

I say BS since the true threat at our borders and ports is being ignored and our military is on the otherside of the world leaving us vulnerable here at home as the invasion continues.

We do seem to be following Romes path which ended in their destruction.

It's hard to support McCain and the war when he is so laxidaisical (sp?)
about our borders and visa over-stayers and all for rewarding this type of thing.

It just doesn't make sense. That's why I'm so skeptical and hesitant about supporting him or this war.

I believe we have to finish what we started. I also know that within 3mths we can train one of our sons/daughters and send them off to war. For some reason we can not train a person in iraq in the same time frame.

We should have a complete IRAQ army up and running. With the US playing big brother.. Warning the neighboring countries a attack on Iraq is a attack on us...An get our troops home... Give us a time frame.....

I also believe Iraq should be paying the bill, not the American people..

How many of our good men and women have to be injured, mamed or killed before we are finally out of there. I do not believe in this war, because it was not to make us safer it was to make the elites RICHER! We need to get our military out of there and back here on our borders. Enough of this circus.
