President Trump canceling South America trip to focus on Syria

President Trump canceling South America trip to focus on Syria

President Trump is canceling his upcoming trip to South America to focus on the unfolding turmoil in Syria, officials said Tuesday.

Trump’s decision to remain in the U.S. follows his promise to unleash a “forceful” response to an alleged chemical attack in Syria and the FBI raid of the office of his personal lawyer.

Trump was scheduled to leave Friday for the Summit of the Americas in Lima, Peru and then stop for a day in Bogota, Colombia on Sunday.

“The President will remain in the United States to oversee the American response to Syria and to monitor developments around the world,” press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

The sudden announcement comes a day after federal agents raided the office and hotel room of Michael Cohen, Trump’s longtime personal attorney and fixer.

The raid, which stemmed from special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, infuriated Trump.

“Attorney-client privilege is dead!” he tweeted Tuesday morning. A day earlier he vented that it was a “disgrace” that the FBI “broke into” his lawyer’s office.

John Bolton, a former ambassador to the United Nations and a noted war hawk joined the Trump administration as the President’s new national security adviser on Monday, raising concern that Trump may take a more aggressive military stance on certain issues including Syria.

Trump last week talked about pulling the remaining 2,000 U.S. troops out of the war-torn nation, a sentiment some — including Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) — say may have emboldened Syrian president Bashar Assad to use chemical weapons.

That is really a shame to cancel his trip to these nice countries over a fake video about the Syria "chemical" attack. Mr. President, you can't demand a country stop doing something it didn't do in the first place. Law of the Universe. The White Helmet videos are fake. They were fake last year. They're fake this year. Syria may have used these types of weapons years ago. They may have used these weapons somewhere in Syria since then. Can't say about that. But I can say that you can not use these White Helmet videos as a reason to attack a country, because these videos are fake.

Trump should stay home. And keep OUR checkbook home.

Focus on ENDING DACA with no path to stay.

Get bills and Laws passed to end asylum!

Defund refugee, asylum, TPS and illegal alien programs and cut off the One Billion to Churches a year facilitating their human trafficking!

These countries goal is to have their hands OUT for our money and dump their people on us at every one of these "meetings".

    NO MORE!

FOCUS ON THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, OUR BORDER, STOPPING ALL IMMIGRATION AND GET OUR INFRASTRUCTURE BUILT.

STAY OUT OF OTHER COUNTRIES BUSINESS...WE ARE NOT THEIR PRESIDENT...AND KEEP THEM OFF OUR SOIL.

WE CAN DO TRADE...BUT NO MORE DUMPING ON THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!
ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

These state visits by the President are very important to big and small countries alike and trips to South America are easy for him due to the proximity so I'm disappointed he's canceling this trip which would be a very positive action to instead stand by and direct what I think is a wrong-headed and dangerous attack on Syria because it's based on fake videos produced by White Helmet which is a rebel group in Syria and who are part of these Islamic Extremist Wack-O-Doddles. Russia will not take this sitting down, if we take out Syrian Air Defense, then they have no choice for Syria but to be defended by air entirely by Russia and Iran, and now we're at war with Russia and Iran.

And I am sure they want to dump the Venezuelan's on us too. They are getting overrun by them.

They have their own agenda...take our money and dump their people on us!

So stay home...we do not want them!

    No asylum for them either!

We really don't have much of a problem with South America. There's almost no immigration problem to speak of with South America. There may be some terrorist threats that sneak in through there and then legally enter US on tourist visas, but for illegal immigration over the border, they're mostly innocent and we need good relations to keep it that way. I don't guess it matters in the long-run, but I like these countries like Peru, Columbia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador. They're very nice people, they mind their own business, run their own shows, support their own people, deal with their own problems, and they're creative, they come up with some good ideas that we might want to use sometime some way.

South American Immigrants in the United States

    MARCH 1, 2016
    SPOTLIGHT
By Jie Zong and Jeanne Batalova

Nearly 3 million South American immigrants lived in the United States in 2014. (Photo: Thomas Hawk)

South American immigrants in the United States, though small in absolute numbers compared to those from Mexico and Central America, experienced the fastest growth since 1960 among all Latin American immigrant groups. The number of South American immigrants grew from 90,000 in 1960 to around 2.9 million in 2014, representing a 32-fold increase.

In 1960, South Americans accounted for just 1 percent of the total foreign-born population in the United States; by 2014, their share increased to 7 percent of the nation’s 42.4 million immigrants.

Immigration from South America grew most rapidly from 1960 to 1980, with the number of South Americans residing in the United States more than doubling each decade (increasing by 285 percent in the 1960s and 220 percent in the 1970s). Since then, the population has continued to rise, but at a slower pace (see Figure 1).

Figure 1. South American Immigrant Population in the United States, 1980-2014

Sources: Data from U.S. Census Bureau 2006, 2010, and 2014 American Community Surveys (ACS), and Campbell J. Gibson and Kay Jung, "Historical Census Statistics on the Foreign-born Population of the United States: 1850-2000" (Working Paper no. 81, U.S. Census Bureau, Washington, DC, February 2006), available online.

In 2014, the five largest countries of origin were Colombia (707,000, or 25 percent of all South American immigrants), Peru (449,000, 16 percent), Ecuador (424,000, 15 percent), Brazil (336,000, 12 percent), and Guyana (273,000, 10 percent). Together, they accounted for more than three-quarters (77 percent) of the total South American immigrant population.

Of the total 11.6 million South American migrants worldwide, more than one-third (35 percent) resided in other South American countries, with the rest scattered in Europe and North America. The United States is the primary destination, representing 25 percent of the global total, followed by Spain (16 percent), Argentina (15 percent), and Venezuela (10 percent), according to mid-2015 estimates by the United Nations Population Division.

to view an interactive map showing where migrants from each South American country have settled worldwide.

On average, most South American immigrants obtained lawful permanent residence in the United States (also known as receiving a green card) through family ties. By and large, South American immigrants mirrored the sociodemographic characteristics of the overall immigrant population with a few exceptions: they were slightly more educated, were more likely to participate in the labor force, and had higher household incomes.

Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau (the most recent 2014 American Community Survey [ACS] and pooled 2010-14 ACS data), the Department of Homeland Security’s Yearbook of Immigration Statistics, and the World Bank's annual remittance data, this Spotlight provides information on the South American immigrant population in the United States, focusing on its size, geographic distribution, and socioeconomic characteristics.

    Definitions

South America includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

The U.S. Census Bureau defines the foreign born as individuals who had no U.S. citizenship at birth. The foreign-born population includes naturalized citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees and asylees, legal nonimmigrants (including those on student, work, or other temporary visas), and persons residing in the country without authorization.

The terms foreign born and immigrant are used interchangeably. In this Spotlight, South American immigrant refers to those who were born in South America and later emigrated to the United States. Data collection constraints do not permit inclusion of those who gained citizenship in a South American country via naturalization and later moved to the United States.

Note: Socioeconomic characteristics for immigrants from Uruguay are based on pooled 2011-13 ACS data.
Click on the bullet points below for more information:

Distribution by State and Key Cities

More than half (56 percent) of South American immigrants have settled in three states: Florida (24 percent), New York (21 percent), and New Jersey (11 percent).
The top four counties with South American immigrants in the period 2010-14 were Miami-Dade County in Florida, Queens County in New York, Broward County in Florida, and Los Angeles County in California. Together, these four counties accounted for about 26 percent of the total South American immigrant population in the United States.

That's legal immigration right? To stop or reduce that, we need to tell Congress to reduce green card and visa numbers. That's what Trump's 71 point plan will do.

Yeah, the Pew Center did a study a few years ago that separated them out and South American illegal immigration was small, the vast majority were from Mexico. But thanks for the information you posted. Very good to know total numbers.
