Revolutionary scenes in France as Macron is losing control

Revolutionary scenes in France as Macron is losing control

By Paul Dijks 19 November 2018

    Image: Twitter

There are lots of happenings in France at the moment. President Macron, already in the dumpster of approval ratings, in what appears to be an attempt to sink yet lower, has imposed a tax hike on already rising diesel prices in France.

The French people are outraged and on Saturday, began their ‘Yellow Vest’ protests. Quite possibly one of the largest protests to date as it’s estimated that 300,000 to one million people are protesting throughout the country.

They are angry over the high fuel prices and the governments refusal to back down on fuel taxes on Monday. Protesters are blocking access to fuel depots and are stopping traffic on major roads throughout France.

The ‘Yellow Vest’ movement began on social media in October over a surge in fuel prices this year, particularly the price of diesel, with many blaming taxes implemented in recent years in France’s anti-pollution fight.
It has quickly escalated into a much broader protest over slack spending under President Emmanuel Macron. More than 850,000 people signed a petition supporting the ‘Yellow Vests’ and there are hundreds of pages on Facebook calling on people to join the protests.
Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said that the government has heard the anger of the people, but on Sunday night reiterated that it would maintain the fuel taxes, which are due to increase yet again in January.
Macron’s approval rating is down to 25 per cent and dropping fast.

France Suffers Anti-Carbon Revolt: Massive Road Blocks Against Macron's Diesel Tax

    Tue, 11/20/2018 - 05:00
    195 SHARES

Authored by Mike Shedlock via MishTalk,

In stunning irony, the French protest against Macron's diesel tax, while Macron insists the UK abide by climate accord.

Please consider France’s Climate Change Commitments Trigger Rising Diesel Prices and Street Protests.
On Saturday, more than 282,700 people, many clad in yellow vests, took to — and, in many places, also literally took — the streets, according to the French Interior Ministry. The ministry said a network of drivers blocked roads at some 2,000 locations across the country, generating backups for miles and causing one death.
The protesters’ chief complaint: the rising cost of diesel fuel. The recent price hike is a direct result of President Emmanuel Macron’s commitment to curbing climate change, which included higher carbon taxes for 2018, the first full year of his term. But beyond the diesel issue, many turned out Saturday to voice any number of other frustrations with the “president for the rich,” who is seen as increasingly removed from ordinary people’s concerns.
The stirrings of the “yellow vest” campaign behind Saturday’s protests began this summer, with online petitions urging Macron to reconsider. But the loudest voice was that of Jacline Mouraud, a white-haired hypnotist and grandmother of three from Brittany who has become the star of the movement.
On Saturday, Mouraud was asked to explain the death of the protester. “I deplore the death of this woman,” she said, speaking to Europe 1 radio. “But who is responsible for this situation? The French government is responsible for the death of this woman.”
According to a poll published Friday by the Odoxa agency for France’s Le Figaro newspaper — albeit with only 1,000 respondents — as many as 3 in 4 French people agree.

    Location of Roadblocks

The lead image is from Anti-Carbon-Tax Revolt Threatens to Paralyze France
The French government approved a measure in late 2017 increasing a direct tax on diesel as well as a tax on carbon, allegedly to fight against climate change. The so-called Contribution Climat Énergie (CCE), a French version of the carbon tax, has steadily increased fuel prices in recent years. Drivers across the country have balked at the rising price of diesel as it disproportionately affects workers who depend on their vehicles to get to and from their jobs. Two-thirds of French people expect a “social explosion” in coming months.
The gilets jaunes are a grass-roots revolt against high fuel prices, and they threaten to paralyze France on Saturday.
The gilets jaunes have organised at least 630 protests nationwide via the blocage17novembre.com website, designed by an 18-year-old student. Some call for go-slows on highways. Others want to block roads, which is punishable by two years in prison and a €4,500 fine. Interior minister Christophe Castaner says no “total blockage” will be tolerated.
But several police unions have expressed sympathy, and promised not to punish petty or “middle-size” offences “out of solidarity with the citizens”.
The rise of the gilets jaunes coincides with Macron’s record low 26 per cent approval rating. A poll published by Ifop on November 14th indicates two-thirds of French people expect a “social explosion” in coming months.

Massive ‘anti-Macron’ protests now even spread to Belgium

By Paul Dijks 22 November 2018

The man who wants to ‘unite’ Europe. Beleaguered President of France, Emmanuel Macron is quite possibly the least popular man in Europe.
His ‘approval rating’ barely holding onto 25 per cent and now his own country is protesting him in one of the largest protests ever, the ‘Yellow Vests’ or ‘Hi-Viz’ protests which included an estimated 300,000 to one million people last weekend, are protesting throughout France.
Those protests have now spilled into Belgium. The target of the protests against fuel prices and tax now include the big Total petrochemicals plant at Feluy in Wallonia.

Environ 30 arrestations. Le mouvement fait des petits. https://www.rtbf.be/info/belgique/detail_gilets-jaunes-la-situation-degenere-a-feluy-la-rtbf-a-nouveau-visee?id=10079049 …

Masked individuals have also joined the protestors as the protests are not limited to a political party. There were roughly 40 people arrested, several vehicles were seized.
The protest stopped traffic on the E19 motorway potentially requiring repairs to the motorway from the damage from the protest.
Francophone broadcaster RTBF speaks of “war scenes” on Belgian soil. There were other blockades in Wallonia last night with around 150 lorries prevented from continuing on their way.
The protests of people in yellow vests started in France on Saturday with 300,000 to one million people protesting throughout the country.
The ‘Yellow Vest’ movement began on social media in October over a surge in fuel prices this year, particularly the price of diesel, with many blaming taxes implemented in recent years in France’s anti-pollution fight.

European Gas Stations Out Of Diesel: French Refinery Strike Deepens Crisis

Diesel is in short supply in Europe. The situation is about to worsen as the biggest French refinery is shutting down...

Authored by Mike Shedlock via MishTalk,

    Diesel is in short supply
in Europe. The situation is about to worsen as the biggest French refinery is shutting down.
Bloomberg reports Europe's Diesel Woes Deepen as Strike Halts French Oil Refinery.
Total SA, France’s biggest refiner, is in the process of shutting its largest plant in the country, the 247,000-barrel-a-day Gonfreville facility in Normandy, due to a labor dispute, a spokeswoman for the company said on Tuesday. A few hundred miles away, in the Netherlands, retail fuel stations are running out of supplies because of shipping constraints on the Rhine, according to Royal Dutch Shell Plc.
Shell said Nov. 20 that it cut production at its Rheinland refining site, the biggest complex of its kind in Germany, due to low water levels on the Rhine. In a tweet on Tuesday, the company said that it was temporarily unable to supply some unmanned fuel stations in the Netherlands.
Gas stations in Germany had already been running dry due to the situation on the Rhine, a major petroleum product transportation corridor that runs northwest from the Swiss Alps all the way to the Netherlands. Switzerland released emergency fuel stockpiles because of the situation on the river.
The premium per barrel of diesel over Brent crude - another indicator of market strength - was at $15.96 on Tuesday, the highest for the time of year in six years.

    Diesel Price Poised to Soar

This shutdown cannot possibly come at a worse time for French President Emmanuel Macron.
Macron is already reeling over a protest of his diesel tax.
    Diesel Tax Turns Violent

People from across France went to Paris to let the president know how they feel about the taxes in general and the tax on diesel. The [Diesel Tax Protests](Diesel Protests in France Turn Violent) then turned violent.
Expect more reactions when the price skyrockets.
Macron Proposes Shutting Down Nuclear Power

In another poorly-timed announcement, France president Emmanuel Macron unveils plan to reduce reliance on nuclear energy.
Amid daily protests about high energy prices, Mr Macron said Francewill shut down 14 nuclear reactors by 2035.
France depends more on nuclear energy than any other country, getting about three-quarters of its electricity from its 19 nuclear plants.
The French leader promised to develop renewable energy instead, saying his priority is weaning France's economy from fuel that contributes to global warming.
    Say What?

Excuse me for pointing out that nuclear energy does not add to greenhouse gasses, not that this whole global warming scare makes much sense in the first place.
    Macron's Latest Brainchild

Mr Macron also said the government will find a way to delay tax increases on fuel during periods when world oil prices are rising.
Excuse me for pointing out that the diesel protest came when oil prices were falling.
In an attempt to calm the protesters, Mr Macron proposed a three-month consultation with associations and activist groups, including the so-called "yellow jackets" who have led the recent protests, about how best to handle the rising energy costs.
Yeah right. That's sure to work.
    Floating in Outer Space

Courtesy of the New York Times, here's the comment of the day:
He seems to be deaf,” said Fabrice Schlegel, who has helped lead some of the citizen protests that have convulsed France in recent weeks.
‘‘He’s talking to us about the ‘ecological transition.’ This is a politician who is floating in outer space.”
    Macron's Foot in Mouth Disease

Macron's diesel and nuclear gaffes are on top of his threat to Keep EU in Perpetual "Temporary" Customs Union Backstop.
Actually, I am happy for Macron for those custom union threats.
Hopefully it will wake up the UK parliament enough to vote down this pathetic deal that Theresa May is attempting to cram down the UK's throat.

Paris protesters damage Arc de Triomphe monument in worst riot in a decade; Macron vows action

    USA TODAY Published 1:15 p.m. ET Dec. 1, 2018 | Updated 4:29 p.m. ET Dec. 1, 2018

    (Photo: Alain Jocard, AFP/Getty Images)

PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron denounced violent protesters who attacked police and vandalized a Paris monument — protesters tagged the Arc de Triomphe with multi-colored graffiti — promising they will be “held responsible for their acts.”
Macron said Saturday that the protests which have left dozens injured and at least 224 arrested “have nothing to do with the peaceful expression of a legitimate anger.” He says “no causes justifies” attacks on police or pillaging stores and burning buildings.
Macron said he is holding an emergency government meeting Sunday on the protests. He spoke from the Group of 20 industrial nations summit being held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
France’s prime minister also announced he was cancelling a planned trip to a major environmental conference in Poland on Sunday in the wake of his country’s worst urban violence in more than a decade. Prime Minister Edouard Philippe’s office said he will send the environment minister, Francois de Rugy, in his place to the COP24 conference in Katowice, Poland.
The cancellation came after violent “yellow jacket” protests engulfed Paris, with protesters vandalizing the Arc de Triomphei, overturning and torching cars and ransacking stores. Protesters are angry over rising taxes and the high cost of living.
France’s interior minister says police were not able to keep protesters from damaging the Arc de Triomphe monument in Paris or spraying it with graffiti.
France saw its worst urban violence in a decade on Saturday as protesters trashed areas of central Paris.
French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner, speaking on French television TF1, said “while some (protesters) invaded the Arc de Triomphe, our police forces were protecting other protesters and bystanders.”
French television showed images of protesters inside the famous monument, spraying graffiti and taking selfies.
Castaner said troublemakers were mixing in with ordinary protesters, called “yellow jackets” for their fluorescent vests, so they could run from police more easily. He urged protesters not to take part in violence. Central Paris was locked down by Saturday afternoon, with all roads leading away from the arc closed off as more police moved in. Police said at least 224 people have been arrested in Saturday’s riot in the French capital.
French far-right leader Marine Le Pen urged the protesters to go home in a tweet.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo tweeted her “indignation” and “deep sadness,” saying that violence is “not acceptable.”
Protests against the high cost of living elsewhere in France on Saturday were largely peaceful.
