Ron Paul Wins 2011 Values Voter Straw Poll

First Posted: 10/8/11 03:51 PM ET Updated: 10/8/11 05:22 PM ET

Texas Congressman Ron Paul has been declared the winner of the 2011 Values Voter Summit Straw Poll, garnering 37 percent of the vote.

Herman Cain finished in second place with 23 percent, while Rick Santorum took third at 16 percent.

Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann finished in a dead-even tie for fourth at eight percent. The rest of the field saw Mitt Romney net four percent, Newt Gingrich at three percent and Jon Huntsman in dead last with zero percent.

After the vote, Slate's David Weigel spoke with Family Research President Council president Tony Perkins, who credited a key strength of Paul's presidential run: http://www.slate.com/blogs/weigel/2011/ ... econd.html

"Do the math," said Perkins. "Ron Paul and his campaign are very well organized."

Paul's campaign could prove to be a major 2012 GOP spoiler. The AP noted on Monday how Paul's libertarian lean has energized some conservatives. But when asked about the term 'spoiler', Paul had this to say:

"I have no idea what exactly spoiler means," Paul said recently while in New Hampshire. "If you're a participant and you have an influence and you win or come close and you influence the debate, I think that's pretty important. So I don't put a negative term on that as spoiling anything. Spoiling their fun? Maybe they need a little spoiling."

His support also showed during his speech itself. The Atlantic's Molly Ball captured how well Paul's rhetoric was received, describing his turn at the microphone as 'rambling, didactic, full of obscure references -- and rapturously received by his fans', backed by segments such as this one. http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc ... on/246396/

"As long as we allow the federal government to grow...things will get worse," he said. "But the good news is, a whole generation of Americans are rising up and saying, 'We were on track at one time. Let's get back on track.' Let's restore our liberty, prosperity and peace!"

MSNBC's First Read adds that another segment of this particular straw poll revealed voters' preferences for the GOP vice-presidential nominee. Bachmann finished in the top slot in that area, followed by Cain, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, and Santorum. http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/20 ... straw-poll

    A Decade in Afghanistan

    Reports the Associated Press:

WASHINGTON (AP) — A decade of war will pass quietly at the White House this week.

President Barack Obama plans no public events Friday to mark a moment the nation never really expected: 10 years of war in Afghanistan. Out of sight and off the minds of millions of Americans, the war is the most prolonged conflict this country has been engaged in since Vietnam. Obama has gone so far as to declare it “the longest war in American history.â€

Ron Paul Wins Straw Poll; Cain 2nd

By Michael Falcone | ABC News – 8 hrs ago

    Values voters love Ron Paul.

The Texas congressman and presidential candidate who remains in the single digits in most national polls emerged as the choice of 37 percent of those who cast ballots at the annual Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C.

Former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain, who has been surging in national presidential primary polls, came in second with 23 percent of the vote, followed by Rick Santorum who garnered 16 percent. Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann tied for fourth — both with 8 percent.

Current GOP front-runner Mitt Romney, who addressed the conference on Saturday, wound up near the bottom of the pack with 4 percent.

Here are the results of the straw poll:

    Ron Paul – 37 percent

    Herman Cain – 23 percent

    Rick Santorum – 16 percent

    Rick Perry – 8 percent

    Michele Bachmann – 8 percent

    Mitt Romney – 4 percent

    Newt Gingrich – 3 percent

    Jon Huntsman – 0 percent

    Undecided – 1 percent

Here are the top four vice presidential choices: Michele Bachmann; Herman Cain; Marco Rubio; and Rick Santorum.

Saturday’s results were very different from last year’s Values Voter straw poll. The support for both Romney and Newt Gingrich declined markedly. Last year, Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., won the straw poll and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee took second place. Paul barely registered in 2010.

As ABC News’ Jason Volack reported, Rep. Paul spoke to the audience of hundreds of social conservatives in Washington earlier today, telling them that war was the greatest threat to the modern family.

And ABC News’ Amy Bingham spoke with several attendees at the annual conference this weekend to take the temperature of the cultural conservative voters. Despite Paul’s straw poll win, Bingham heard lots of support for Cain, but the door is still clearly open for other candidates:

Bruce Gordon of College Grove, Ore., said he supported Cain because he seems “down-to-earth.â€

Downplaying Ron Paul’s Values Voters Victory

I’ve often joked that when Ron Paul gets to the White House, the media will declare the presidency irrelevant and focus on how Mitt Romney, Rick Perry and other establishment candidates represent the future of the Republican Party. A creative contributor at Ron Paul Forums put together an interesting collage of headlines showcasing how the mainstream media is spinning or downplaying Ron Paul’s Values Voters Summit straw poll victory on Saturday.

    httx://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/ ... story.html

He is the Republican party Presidential candidate, NOT the libertarian one.

Cain didn’t win, he came in a distant 2nd

    httx://www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc ... on/246396/

Would they say that about Cain if he won, or did they when he won FL?

[b][color=darkred][size=150]Nice big picture of Romney who came in 4th with 4% of the vote and of course diminishing and minimalizing Ron Paul, “least socially conservativeâ€

From Outsider to Leader of the Movement

In an op-ed for the Des Moines Register, Iowa Ron Paul 2012 campaign chairman Drew Ivers remembers how the GOP establishment once treated Ronald Reagan: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/articl ... r-movement

He had no trouble expressing his anti-Washington, anti-establishment feelings. And he maintained a strong grassroots following. His disdain for the overreaching hand of big government and all its regulatory tendencies provided an easy answer to complex questions: “minimum government authority.â€
