From today's San Francisco Chronicle.

San Francisco's Human Services Agency today released a report of its biennial homeless count, which was conducted in January.

The report includes the info that 78% were living in the City when they became homeless. This is up from from 62% in 2007. Twenty-five percent of those surveyed said that losing a job contributed to their being homeless.

Forty-five percent are homeless for the first time, but homlessness is becoming chronic. More than 45% said that they'd been homeless for more than three years. This is up from 35% in 2007.

Older people are affected more than are the young. Sixty-five percent of those surveyed were between the ages of 41 and 60.
