US Prepares To block Influx Of GM Food

US prepares to block influx of GM food

AFTER a decade of exporting its genetically modified crops all over the world, the US is preparing to block foreign GM foods from entering the country - if they are deemed to threaten its agriculture, environment or citizens' health, that is.

The warning was given to the US Department of Agriculture, which polices agricultural imports, by its own auditor, the Office of Inspector General (OIG): "Unless international developments in transgenic plants and animals are closely monitored, USDA could be unaware of potential threats that particular new transgenic plants or animals might pose to the nation's food supply."

The OIG expects the number of GM crops and traits, and the number of countries producing them, to double by 2015, raising the risks of imports of GM crops unknown to the USDA.

The report urges the USDA to strengthen its links with countries where research is exploding, such as China, India and Brazil. China, for example, is ready to launch the world's first commercial GM rice, but it has yet to be approved by the USDA. Problems will arise, says the OIG, when new GM products enter the US undeclared - the USDA would be unprepared to test or even identify them.

The OIG cautions against blocks on imports that could be seen as trade barriers, however. In 2006, the World Trade Organization ruled in favour of the US, arguing that the European Union's stringent regulations on GM crops were anti-free trade.

GM crops and foods should be banned fromt the entire globe. Corporations are attempting to patent their version of natural foods. If they hold the patent on a food or crops and those crops invade natural crops (by pollenation) then corporations can end up owning a version of crop or food that use to be produced naturally. If they control patents to crops and foods, then they control everything. In addition, we dont know if these crops or foods are safe to eat. Farmers in many countries, including USA have reported finding GM crops invading their natural crops. And then corporations like Monsanto sue the farmer for violating their "patent". This has got to be stopped immediately.

You got it Redpony353. In many areas it is alledged that Monsanto intentionally spreads GM seeds to take over the natural crops. Globalists are on the attack on many fronts.

Even worse, if they cause sterilization or weaken the other crops defenses against disease, environment or insect...

People have been developing these crops for thousands of years through natural selection and one bad crop could spoil the whole bunch.

Who is going to put a stop to this company Monsato? Why doesn't our government do something about their invasive plants?

My husband works in a warehouse that receives fabric shipments from overseas, and even those shipments have to be inspected for anything that could pose an environmental problem here in Oregon. They spray the shipments down for invasive insect species.

As well, boats being brought from elsewhere in the nation, have to be fully inspected and treated now, as we have had a problem with different snails and other marine life that is not natural here, so why do we let this stuff go on with companies like this?

I have read many articles in this topic in the last several months. Some farmers here in USA have nicknamed them "Monsatan"

Oh now that I read your post it reminds me.....they are also developing terminator seeds. These seeds develop crops that have seeds that dont grow so the farmer cant save seeds from one crop to use the next year. That way the farmer must always buy new seeds. Nice eh? And it looks like the bees dont like it either as they seem to be disappearing.

And of course Monsanto was/is trying to patent some pigs because the pigs ate their modified grain and they could somehow claim the pigs. I just know it is a big mess and it has potential health threats, not to mention they can control the amount and prices of foods and hold the farmers and public hostage to their demands.

We in this nation have hurt ourselves, to some degree by getting away from family farming. People used to be fairly self-sufficient, but now we are not and paying for it.

I for one would love to have my own little "farm" to some degree. I could not butcher my own animals, but there are plenty of people you pay a fee to do it, and they also take away all the "leftovers" and leave you with your meat to freeze.

Gardening is a snap, and so would your own eggs (it would take only a few chickens to produce enough eggs for one, 4 member family and they take little to upkeep).

But..in a rental, not really possible, thus the reason most of us can't.

Seems to me, this problem all started when people could no longer homestead and claim enough land to self-sustain. Conspiracy theorist I am not, but you have to wonder, it does seem so much of this all just went hand in hand.....

Leaving the lands for only a small few to own and farm, and leaving out the average person. On top of that, start dragging down the wages and incomes with huge influxes of illegal aliens, and there you go, an outright war on the ability to be independent from the government.
