Summary
A powerful M7.7 earthquake struck off Flores Island in eastern Indonesia, leaving at least 20 people dead in early rescue reports, collapsing buildings and triggering a tsunami alert across several coastal regions.

The earthquake hit before sunrise on August 15, 2026. Violent shaking damaged homes, hospitals, government buildings and port facilities in Maumere and communities across East Nusa Tenggara. Landslides blocked sections of the Trans-Flores Highway, while power and communication failures complicated rescue operations.
