Utilize the soothing properties of these 21 botanicals to help with the common cold
11/07/2025 // Lance D Johnson // 490 Views

As darker evenings fall and as the sugar overload of the holiday season takes its toll on the herd, a familiar, unwelcome guest often follows: the common cold. For many, the immediate reflex is a trip to the pharmacy, an aisle lined with brightly colored boxes promising rapid relief. Yet, a quieter, more profound symphony of healing has been playing for millennia, one composed not in a laboratory of coal tar but in the rich soil of the earth.A growing body of scientific inquiry and a resurgence of traditional wisdom are turning the spotlight onto a vast apothecary of natural remedies, from the humble ginger rhizome to the enzyme-rich pineapple, each offering a unique and powerful note in the chorus of immune support and symptomatic relief. This movement is not about rejecting modern medicine, but about rediscovering a foundational layer of healthcare, one that empowers individuals with knowledge of the potent phytochemicals and therapeutic properties residing in common plants and foods, providing a multifaceted approach to shorten illness, ease discomfort, and revitalize the body during an immune challenge.
Key points:
- A diverse range of over twenty natural remedies, including herbs, fruits, and simple environmental adjustments, can effectively combat cold symptoms.
- Scientific research is increasingly validating the mechanisms behind these traditional remedies, such as the anti-inflammatory curcumin in turmeric and the mucilage in marshmallow root.
- Many remedies offer multiple benefits, addressing issues from lung congestion and sore throats to digestive upset and low energy.
- Historical use in systems like Ayurveda and traditional European herbalism provides a long-standing context for their application.
- Integrating these remedies involves a holistic approach, considering everything from the moisture in the air to the enzymes in our food.
The respiratory defenders and throat soothers
The battle against a cold often begins where the air meets the body: the respiratory tract. Here, a class of botanicals acts as both shield and solace. Ginger, a rhizome revered for centuries, does more than just warm the body; its bioactive compound, gingerol, is a powerhouse with natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Research suggests it can significantly reduce airway resistance, making each breath less of a labor.
Similarly, thyme, a fragrant kitchen staple, contains flavonoids like thymol and carvacrol that grant it potent antimicrobial and antispasmodic effects. These compounds are the reason thyme extract has been shown in studies to be more effective than a placebo in quieting the relentless coughs of bronchitis, working to calm the spasms of irritated bronchial tubes.
For a throat rendered raw and scratchy, marshmallow root offers soothing comfort. When processed, the root exudes a thick, gummy substance called mucilage. This mucilage creates a slick, demulcent gel that coats the throat’s membranes, providing a protective layer that soothes irritation and reduces the urge to cough.
Licorice root, another demulcent herb, contains glycyrrhizin, a compound that not only soothes but also possesses antiviral and immune-boosting properties, making it a dual-action remedy.
The simple act of gargling with warm salt water leverages osmosis to draw fluid from inflamed throat tissues, reducing swelling and flushing out irritants.
Even the air itself can be a therapy; reintroducing moisture with a humidifier, or inhaling steam infused with eucalyptus oil, helps to hydrate dry airways, loosen congestion, and provide immediate, gentle relief. Eucalyptus, rich in the compound eucalyptol, acts as a decongestant by breaking down mucus and fighting inflammation, a fact supported by a 2011 study that found a throat spray containing eucalyptus provided significant and immediate improvement in upper respiratory symptoms.
The immune system’s cavalry and inflammation tamers
When a virus breaches the body’s initial defenses, the call goes out to the immune system, and a different regiment of natural remedies marches forth. Echinacea, the iconic purple coneflower, is not merely an antibacterial agent; it stimulates the very core of the body’s defense network, encouraging white blood cells to mount a more vigorous response. This immune-modulating effect is why consistent use of Echinacea has been linked to shortening the duration and severity of colds.
The vibrant yellow spice turmeric offers a different kind of support through its primary polyphenol, curcumin. With research pointing to potential benefits for over 850 health conditions, curcumin has shown particular promise in improving breathing function and controlling asthma-related inflammation, making a warm cup of golden milk a deeply therapeutic beverage.
The importance of vitamin C in immune function is well-known, but its sources extend far beyond the orange. Rosehips, the fruit of the rose plant, provide a exceptionally dense and bioavailable source of this crucial vitamin, along with a suite of minerals that aid in tissue repair and energy production.
Pineapple brings a unique weapon to the fight: bromelain. This protein-digesting enzyme, concentrated in the fruit’s core, possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties. Multiple studies, including those on children with acute sinusitis, have found that bromelain can lead to a statistically significant faster recovery, helping to reduce sinus pressure and the dry cough that often accompanies post-nasal drip.
Stinging nettle, often foraged as a spring green, is a nutrient-dense herb whose leaves contain compounds that may help modulate the body’s inflammatory response to allergens, which can sometimes mimic or exacerbate cold symptoms. Its historical use as a spring tonic speaks to its role in revitalizing and strengthening the body after a long winter.
The holistic harmonizers: from digestion to energy
A cold’s impact is not confined to the head and chest; it is a full-body experience that can drain energy and disrupt digestion. This is where a broader class of remedies, the holistic harmonizers, comes into play. Honey, a natural wonder crafted by bees, is far more than a sweetener. Its low water content and acidic pH create an environment hostile to bacteria, while its thick consistency coats and soothes the throat. A double-blind controlled trial even found a honey and coffee paste to be more effective than steroids for persistent post-infectious coughs.
The warming spices often found in chai tea—cinnamon, clove, cardamom, and black pepper—form a synergistic blend. Cinnamon, with its cinnamaldehyde compound, exhibits strong antimicrobial effects, while cloves, rich in eugenol, provide analgesic and expectorant properties. A dash of cayenne pepper introduces capsaicin, which has been shown to reduce chronic coughing and help clear phlegm.
For those feeling weary and drained, a tea made from lemon balm, a herb used since the time of the ancient Greeks, can calm nervousness and aid restorative sleep, allowing the body to direct its energy toward healing.
Mullein, with its velvety leaves, has a long history of use for lung complaints. Its saponins are believed to help loosen phlegm, while its mucilage soothes the respiratory tract.
Even the simple apple and carrot, often relegated to the realm of basic nutrition, play a role. Apples are a source of quercetin, a flavonoid that can support immune function, while carrots provide beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A, a critical nutrient for maintaining the integrity of mucosal linings in the respiratory system.
From the tart, cranberry-like roselle (hibiscus) rich in vitamin C to the mineral-rich blackstrap molasses, these remedies work in concert to nourish the body deeply, promoting detoxification, improving energy levels, and lessening the overall burden of symptoms, guiding one gently back to a state of health. It's time to get back to nature's wisdom and begin equipping your home with an herbal apothecary!

Bare Mountain Farm shares how to create a more sustainable soil blocks for seed starting.
It is better for the environment ( less plastic ) and healthier for the seeds as they grow into plants then transferred into the garden.

He tells us “A finished tray ready for transplants. The cool thing about these blocks is the soil mix already has natural compost fertilization for a good start built right into the block.“

Learn how to properly hide your valuables and firearms to prevent inevitable looters from taking a successful haul

If you’ve ever had your home broken into, your personal belongings ransacked and looted, you learn real quick how important it is to hide the things that matter in discreet places. You don't want to hide your valuables in places that can be easily accessed or in safes that are in plain view, so that looters can take hostages to gain access to them.
In a world teetering on the edge of economic chaos and hunger, protecting your belongings becomes more important than ever. The modern prepper faces a dual threat: natural disasters can wipe out a home and a cache of supplies in an instant, and desperate looters are waiting to take advantage of the next well-stocked pantry. For these reasons, preppers have a target on their back and must take extra steps to hide in plain site and lock down their valuables and survival stash in unorthodox places.
The ancient military tactic of the cache, perfected by guerrilla fighters from the French Resistance to the Taliban, is now being adapted for suburban homes and rural retreats, creating a silent, underground economy of security for those who believe in being ready for anything. The central thesis is that true security lies not just in accumulation, but in strategic invisibility, a lesson learned on battlefields and now applied to basements.
Key points:
- The practice of caching, or hiding supplies, has deep historical roots in asymmetrical warfare and is now a cornerstone of modern preparedness.
- Secrecy is paramount; the knowledge of a stockpile is a vulnerability that can spread quickly through casual conversation.
- Diversifying hiding spots, both inside and outside the home, prevents the total loss of supplies if one location is discovered.
- Psychological tactics, such as leaving a "sacrificial stash," can mislead looters into believing they have found everything of value.
- Creative concealment methods, from modified furniture to false walls and buried outdoor containers, leverage everyday objects to create secure hiding places.
The guerrilla history of hiding your goods
The impulse to bury valuables is not new. It is a thread that runs through the history of every resistance movement that has faced a superior force. As detailed in the guide by authors Joe Nobody and T. Pike, the French Resistance during the Nazi occupation relied on cached weapons and supplies air-dropped by the Allies, hiding them in bread panniers, culverts, and holes in the ground. Decades later, the Viet Cong elevated this tactic to an art form, constructing elaborate underground tunnel systems to hide not just weapons, but the very means to sustain their prolonged campaign. They would attack, break contact, bury their gear, and vanish into the local population, a tactic that caused immense frustration for American troops. One of the authors, a former Marine in Afghanistan, witnessed this firsthand, recalling the discovery of a crude cache after a firefight, a PKM machine gun hidden beneath a burning pile of hay. He notes that for every cache found, countless others likely remained hidden, a testament to the method's effectiveness. This martial history provides a stark backdrop for the modern prepper, who may not be facing a mighty army but understands the principle: what is hidden cannot be easily taken.
Thinking like a looter to outsmart them
The first and most critical step in protecting a stockpile begins long before any disaster, in the quiet routine of daily life. The cardinal rule is secrecy. Bragging to a friend, posting on an online forum, or even letting a child mention the family’s preparations to a schoolmate can unwittingly broadcast your readiness to a wide audience. When society frays, that knowledge becomes a map for desperate people. The next step requires a shift in mindset, to see your own home through the eyes of a looter. They are not forensic experts; they are rushed, desperate, and will head for the obvious spots first—the pantry, the garage, the master bedroom closet. This is precisely why storing firearms in these common locations is a significant risk. A burglar, whether in peaceful times or during a collapse, knows to ransack the nightstand and the closet. Hiding them in uncommon, creatively concealed spots is the only way to ensure they remain in the owner’s hands.
This psychological game can be advanced further with the concept of a "sacrificial stash." By leaving a small, meager collection of supplies in an obvious location—a few open boxes of food, water jugs with only a few sips left—a prepper can create a powerful illusion. Looters who find this will likely assume the homeowners have already been picked clean or were poorly prepared. They take the paltry offering and move on, never suspecting that the true wealth of supplies is hidden in plain sight, tucked away in a network of smaller, more creative caches. This strategy of diversification is crucial; putting all your survival eggs in one basket is a gamble with catastrophic odds.
From false floors to buried barrels: A guide to concealment
The practical application of this philosophy turns a home into a puzzle box of hidden compartments. Inside, the opportunities are limited only by creativity. Hollowed-out furniture, like an ottoman or a bed frame, can create significant hidden voids. A false wall behind a narrow, paneled-over bookcase can conceal long-term non-perishables, accessed only when truly needed. For those with a hand for minor carpentry, false floors are a classic and effective method. One can nail old milk crates to the stringers beneath a closet floor, covering them with thin flooring and a carpet. No one stepping into a small closet would notice the slight give, and the cache remains accessible by peeling back the corner of the carpet. For basements, a hidden root cellar fashioned from painted cinderblocks can wall off a section of the foundation, invisible to anyone who isn't taking measurements. Even an old, decommissioned fuel oil tank can be cut open along its seam, filled with goods, resealed, and repainted to become a massive, unsuspected vault.
The final layer of security, however, lies beyond the home's walls. Burying supplies on one's property is the ultimate insurance policy. As the military guide emphasizes, searching a house is far easier than digging up an entire pasture. A properly sealed 55-gallon drum or a five-gallon bucket, buried with its lid just inches below the surface, creates a weatherproof, temperature-regulated stash. A raised garden bed can serve as a distraction for a buried cache of weapons and supplies.
If a home is overrun, these buried caches become lifelines, allowing a family to flee and later return under cover of darkness to retrieve enough supplies to survive. Even a rain barrel can be weaponized for concealment; an extra, non-functional barrel can store sealed bags of supplies, or an existing one can have goods submerged inside, giving the appearance of a normal water source to any casual observer. In the end, these methods are not about paranoia, but about a quiet, confident self-sufficiency. It is the understanding that in an uncertain world, the most valuable things are those that no one else knows exist.

November’s Secret “Sneak It In” Garden
by Bill Heid
in Survival Gardening
How Cold Soil Grows the Hardiest Harvests
It might sound downright crazy, but November’s actually one of the best times to start a garden—especially if you love gardening and would rather fill your own pantry than fork over cash at the supermarket.
Most folks think the season’s over once the leaves fall, but that’s when the earth quietly opens her second window. From garlic bulbs to sugar snap peas, late fall soil hides a treasure trove of crops that come alive in the chill—rewarding you with food long after everyone else’s trowels are hung up.
Why November Is Garden Gold

Autumn’s real wealth: honest work, muddy boots, and a basket filled with November’s hard-earned garden gold.
Truth be told, November plantings can even outshine anything you’ve sown in spring. (depending on where you live, of course.) Cold nights accentuate flavor, deepen sweetness, and stretch harvests. Roots dig in strong. Leaves turn crisp and bright. The fun part? When your neighbors are scraping frost off windshields, you’ll be snipping kale for breakfast.
Step outside one frosty morning—feel the damp earth under your boots, hear the russet leaves crunch, see your breath hang in the still air. That’s the perfect time to plant garlic, kale, spinach, and beyond.
Garlic: Your Multiplying Money-Maker
If any crop feels like pure alchemy, it’s garlic. You break apart a bulb, tuck each clove into November’s cold soil, and by early summer, every one of those cloves has turned into a full head—sometimes tenfold what you started with.
Sure, a pound of seed garlic might set you back five bucks, but by July you’ll be looking at fifty dollars’ worth of bulbs. Plant cloves pointy side up, two inches deep and a handful apart. Mulch thick with straw and let the frost work its quiet magic. Hardneck types thrive in northern ground; softneck varieties do better down south. Skip garlic getting garlic in this month and you’ll regret it come midsummer.
Kale: The Frost-Sweet Powerhouse
Kale’s the tireless workhorse of any homestead. Plant it in November and you’ll be clipping greens for salads and stir-fries straight through the freeze. Cold weather doesn’t scare kale—it sweetens it. Each frost kiss turns those tough leaves into tender, sugary gold.
Give the plants a foot of elbow room though, sprinkle compost around their roots, and cover with row cloth when the mercury dips low. Even in the low twenties, kale stands tall like a green flag of victory.
Spinach: Fast, Relentless, and Sweet
Spinach loves a chill more than most crops ever will. Plant it now, let a light frost nip the leaves, and you’ll end up with crisp, candy-sweet greens. The trick is simple—harvest outer leaves and leave the heart intact. Spinach will just keep cranking out new growth week after week.
Keep sowing fresh seed every couple of weeks until the soil finally freezes. Old standbys like Bloomsdale or Tyee handle the cold like champs. A well-kept row can give you thirty pounds of greens before spring even wakes up.
Lettuce: The Quick Change Artist
Lettuce thrives in November’s cool mood. Mix Buttercrunch, Romaine, and loose-leaf varieties for a colorful salad bar right outside your door. Sprinkle seeds thickly, thin them out as they grow, and eat those baby trimmings as microgreens.
A simple plastic sheet or cold frame can turn that patch into a mini greenhouse. Snip leaves above the crown—lettuce rebounds two or three times over. When you’re eating your own fresh greens instead of paying $5 for a plastic box, hey, it’s tasting independence and freedom.
Rainbow Chard: Beauty That Feeds You
Nothing brightens a gray November like rainbow chard. Its stems glow crimson, gold, and pink against the dull earth, promising nutrition and cheer. Chard shrugs off frost like it’s nothing and just keeps producing.
Plant it about a foot apart, mulch deep, and let it ride through winter. Even dusted with snow, it keeps sending up fresh leaves. Chop it into soups, stir-fry it, or treat it like spinach—it’ll never let you down.
Sweet Roots: Carrots and Beets
Planting carrots now is like burying treasure you’ll dig up later. Cold weather locks in their sugars, making them crisp and sweet. Leave them underground under a thick straw blanket and harvest as needed—nature’s refrigerator at work.
Beets double your bounty—harvest the young greens first, then dig the ruby roots later. Try Detroit Dark Red or Bull’s Blood for color and flavor that stand out in any stew.
Radishes: Lightning-Fast Rewards
Radishes are the speed demons of the fall garden—ready in under a month. Sprinkle seeds thickly, thin for space, and harvest before the ground freezes solid. Their crisp, peppery crunch livens up cold-weather meals, and kids love their quick payoff. Keep sowing in short rows for a steady rotation.
Broccoli: Side-Shoot Bonanza
Broccoli loves a chill. Start sturdy transplants now, give them two feet of space, and feed them compost. Once you cut the main head, the plant throws out little side shoots for weeks—bite-sized broccoli crowns perfect for soups and stir-fry. Cold weather means richer flavor and less bolting.
Brussels Sprouts: Frost’s Finest Gift
Those little cabbages on a stick only get sweeter after frost touches them. Space transplants three feet apart, snap off lower leaves to feed the sprouts, and harvest from bottom to top. With steady care, you’ll be picking till midwinter.
Storage Kings: Cabbage and Turnips
Few crops store like cabbage. A single head, grown now, can weigh ten pounds and sit happily in your root cellar till spring soups and stews. Quick types mature in small beds; big storage kinds keep your shelves heavy for months.
Turnips are two crops in one—greens in three weeks, roots in fifty days. Mulch deep and dig as needed. Purple Top White Globe is a dependable classic every year.
Onions: The Quiet Bridge Crop
Onion sets belong in the ground right now. These tiny bulbs sleep through winter, then wake up strong. Snip the greens for cooking, or let them swell into full heads by spring. A few left behind will sprout again next fall. Frost doesn’t faze them one bit—and each bulb you grow means fewer you’ll buy.
Spicy Greens: Arugula and Mustard
Arugula’s wild peppery bite turns winter salads into something special. Plant once and it’ll keep reseeding year after year—nature’s own renewal plan. Mustard greens, too, are built for cold, getting tastier after a frost. Pick outer leaves for soups or sautéed greens. They bounce back strong after every harvest.
Winter Rarities: Mache and Claytonia
If you want to impress yourself, grow mache. This little European green, sold for big bucks at markets, thrives in dim light and bitter cold. Scatter seeds mixed with sand for even spacing—it loves neglect.
Claytonia, or miner’s lettuce, is another forgotten gem. Its round, crisp leaves and tangy taste brighten winter meals, and its vitamin C helped pioneers keep scurvy away. A bowl of this is like eating spring in January.
Collards and Bok Choy: The Tough and the Tender
Collards might just be the toughest green alive. They face freezing nights without blinking and keep feeding you till summer. Young leaves work raw; big ones soften perfectly in a skillet. Give them compost, water, and time—they’ll take care of the rest.
Bok choy, on the other hand, brings a tender crunch to Asian dishes and country stews alike. Tight rows give you baby harvests; wider spacing grows full heads. Cool, short days make bok choy thrive where summer heat would wreck it.
Vertical Victory: Peas
Don’t forget climbing peas—snow or sugar snap. These vines love cool weather and sweeten in the cold. Give them a trellis and they’ll reward you with handfuls of pods week after week. Even better, they fix nitrogen in the soil, priming your beds for whatever comes next.
The Golden Rule: Water Less
Here’s the old-timer’s secret: in November, less is more. Cold soil holds moisture like a sponge. Too much watering and you’ll drown your seeds before they wake. Let fall rains, dew, and humidity do the job. If the dirt’s damp two inches down, leave it be. That patience builds strong, deep roots.
Wrap-Up
So don’t let the calendar fool you. November isn’t the end of the gardening year—it’s the quiet start of your next harvest. Every clove, seed, and sprout you tuck into the soil this month pays back in flavor, nutrition, and hard-earned independence.
Listen to nature’s cues, trust her rhythms, and let the cold season fill your pantry while the rest of the world waits for spring.

Our new off grid solar power system from Inergy, Apex has arrived and is ready to be installed at the small cabin in the woods Inergy: https://glnk.io/q0w/the-wooded-beardsman
We will attempt to mount the solar panels way up in the tree, 40 feet up in order to get maximum power from the sun. When that fails, we are forced to mount them to the gas generator house we call 'the dog house'. We'll need to move the power house generator further away from the cabin and in the sun later in order to produce free off grid power for the tiny house.
We will show you how to install the solar system which runs a small portable battery system. Included are two fixed, rigid solar panels, and one soft portable panel that can be taken with us on off grid adventures in the wilderness and power all our needs.
The solar system we are installing would work for a shed or rv, motor home or small house. It comes with a portable solar power bank and is a complete system. We will review the operation of the solar system in future adventures.
