In this video, we follow Alosha as he builds an underground hobbit-style home from scratch on a $2,000 budget. Using natural materials and organic, curved design, the house is carefully shaped into the earth to blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
From excavation and log walls to arched ceilings, waterproofing, insulation, and a living grass roof, the entire build is shown step by step. The home features natural ventilation, a wood-burning stove, and a curved glass front that fills the interior with light.
This project is a hands-on journey of craftsmanship, creativity, and connection to nature—showing how a simple underground shelter can become a warm, livable home.

In this incredible project, @Tornado_Dave transforms an ordinary backyard into a full-scale underground bunker connected by a secret tunnel — all built by hand, from start to finish. Watch as Dave digs deep beneath his property, reinforcing each section with precision engineering and clever homemade tools.
From designing a tunnel-boring machine to fabricating a custom lift system, electric cart, and hidden entrance disguised as a log burner, every stage of construction reveals next-level craftsmanship and persistence. This build combines engineering, survival planning, and creative problem-solving at its finest.
You’ll see the entire journey — digging, reinforcing, waterproofing, pouring concrete, managing drainage, and creating a secure passageway between two underground bunkers. This is not just a build… it’s a masterclass in underground construction and human determination.

Strategic bug-out locations: 9 Safe havens beyond the wilderness
01/13/2026 // Evangelyn Rodriguez // 70 Views
Tags: bug out, Collapse, disaster, emergency shelter, off grid, preparedness, prepper, prepping, security, SHTF, survival, survivalist, tips

- Prioritize secure, semi-permanent shelters over isolated wilderness survival. Ideal options include private land, trusted friends' properties, and public and state-owned lands with legal access to resources.
- Owning remote property (with water, solar energy and supplies) is ideal. Pre-arranged agreements with relatives or friends for mutual support (labor, security) offer viable alternatives.
- Federal and state-managed areas allow legal camping, hunting and fishing. Research regulations and scout low-traffic zones for extended stays during crises.
- Abandoned factories, ghost towns and office buildings provide shelter and salvageable materials, but use cautiously post-collapse of law.
- Power line easements and logging roads offer secluded access without deep wilderness risks, though property boundaries may be enforced during unrest.
When disaster strikes, many survivalists instinctively envision fleeing to the wilderness. However, the romanticized notion of living off the land in the woods is impractical and dangerous for most people. Instead, experts recommend identifying secure, semi-permanent locations that offer shelter, resources and safety. Here are nine strategic bug-out locations that provide better odds of survival than an isolated forest:
1. Private land you own or are buying
Owning remote property remains the gold standard for bug-out preparedness. Ideal locations are outside densely populated areas and feature fresh water sources such as wells, springs or ponds. Pre-stocking supplies, setting up rainwater collection and installing solar power can transform a remote plot into a sustainable refuge.
2. Home of a relative or trusted friend
For those without private land, a trusted relative or friend’s property, particularly a farm or rural home, can serve as a viable retreat. Pre-arranged agreements ensure mutual support: In exchange for shelter, survivors can contribute security, labor or supplies. Advance planning allows for stockpiling food and fuel, easing the transition during an emergency.
3. Federal public land
National forests, wildlife preserves and other federally managed lands permit dispersed camping for up to 14 days. While wooded, these areas offer legal access to hunting, fishing and shelter-building. Annual or lifetime passes (available to seniors, veterans and disabled individuals) ensure legitimacy if questioned. Scouting locations beforehand maximizes familiarity with terrain and resources.
4. State-owned land
State parks and reserves provide similar benefits to federal land but with varying regulations. Researching local rules and identifying low-traffic areas ensures a smoother transition during a crisis. Some states allow extended stays in designated zones, making them viable for medium-term survival.
5. Campgrounds
For short-term emergencies, established campgrounds offer infrastructure like restrooms, fire pits and sometimes electricity. Selecting lesser-known sites reduces competition during evacuations. Pre-booking seasonal passes or discussing emergency plans with campground owners can help you secure priority access.
6. Industrial buildings (factories or warehouses)
Abandoned factories and warehouses, often sturdier than residential structures, may contain generators, tools or leftover supplies. While trespassing risks legal consequences post-crisis, in a true societal breakdown, these buildings provide shelter from looters and extreme weather.
7. Ghost towns
Long-abandoned ghost towns, particularly those untouched by tourism, offer isolation and usable structures. Scouting in advance ensures access to stable buildings and nearby water sources. In prolonged disasters, repurposing materials from crumbling structures can fortify makeshift shelters.
Examples of useful materials you can gather include broken bricks, wooden beams, metal sheets, shattered glass and loose nails or screws. Salvaged ropes, torn fabric and splintered planks can also be repurposed for structural support or insulation, while discarded pipes, rebar and collapsed roofing tiles can be used to reinforce walls or anchor temporary coverings against wind and rain, according to BrightU.AI's Enoch.
8. Abandoned office buildings
Urban survivors may find refuge in deserted office complexes, which often have basements (for tornadoes) and upper floors (for floods). Generators, supplies and barricadable entry points enhance security. However, like industrial sites, these should only be used when rule of law has collapsed.
9. Power line easements and abandoned logging roads
Maintained utility corridors and old logging roads grant access to secluded areas without deep wilderness risks. These routes are less likely to be monitored but still require caution; property owners may enforce boundaries aggressively during unrest.
Surviving a long-term crisis demands more than wilderness skills—it requires foresight in securing viable retreats. Whether through private land, trusted networks or legally accessible public spaces, strategic planning ensures safety beyond the unpredictable dangers of the forest. By prioritizing shelter, resources and legality, preppers can navigate disasters with greater confidence and resilience.

Fire Starting For Survival | episode 232
Today I’m going to talk all about fire starting for survival. This is part of my National Preparedness Month series. I go into many reasons why you would want to be able to start a fire. And not just for a SHTF scenario. You might need to start a grill and your lighter is out. Where I live a store trip takes at least fifteen minutes. Fire starting is an invaluable skill to have for survival.
There are a million different ways to start a fire. Some very easy and some incredibly hard. Starting a fire with a lighter and vaseline-soaked cotton ball is about as easy as it gets. On the other end is hand-drill fire and natural tinder. Finding natural fuel in the humidity of the south is not an easy task.
I talk about several of the methods for starting a fire. The different tools you can use and pair them with. There’s two parts to it. You need a way to generate a spark and a way to ignite that spark.

Budget prepping: Ways to make your food budget last longer
May 11, 2022 - Posted by Zoey Sky
(Natural News) If you’ve been paying attention to store items for the last few months, you may have noticed that food prices have been increasing. A prepper’s guide to LONG-TERM FOOD STORAGE: How to safeguard your pantry for emergencies

- Commercial packaging fails to protect food against spoilage, pests and oxidation. Proper storage extends shelf life from months to decades.
- Dry goods like grains, legumes, baking essentials, snacks and dried fruits/oils benefit most from proper food storage.
- Top storage methods include vacuum sealing (prevents oxygen exposure, best for sturdy items), Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers (blocks moisture/pests, ideal for bulk storage), food-grade buckets (lined with Mylar for bulk; Gamma Seal lids for easy access), canning jars (good for small quantities; store in darkness) and repurposed containers (e.g., soda bottles for rice/popcorn).
- Avoid dry pack canning. Oven-heating jars doesn’t remove oxygen and risks breakage. Freezing sealed containers kills pests more safely.
- Proper storage ensures nutrient-rich, long-term food security for emergencies and self-sufficiency.
In an era of increasing uncertainty, many households are turning to long-term food storage as a critical survival strategy. But simply stockpiling groceries isn’t enough. Most commercial packaging isn’t designed to preserve food for years, leaving families vulnerable to spoilage, pests and nutrient loss. To build a truly resilient pantry, food must be repackaged using specialized techniques that extend shelf life while maintaining safety and flavor.
Why repackaging matters
Foods purchased from grocery stores often come in flimsy plastic bags, cardboard boxes or thin plastic sleeves, none of which provide adequate protection against humidity, insects or oxidation. Items like dried fruit, pasta, rice and baking mixes may already contain microscopic insect eggs or degrade quickly when exposed to air. Repackaging these staples into airtight containers with oxygen absorbers or vacuum sealing them can extend their shelf life from months to decades.
Foods that need repackaging
Nearly any dry or shelf-stable food benefits from better storage. Common candidates include:
- Grains and legumes: Rice, beans, oatmeal, cornmeal
- Baking essentials: Flour, sugar, powdered milk, chocolate chips
- Snacks and mixes: Crackers, popcorn, pretzels, pancake mix
- Dried goods: Raisins, nuts, spices, tea bags
Foods containing oils (like cookies or nuts) are particularly prone to rancidity and require oxygen-free storage. Even sugar—though it doesn’t spoil—can harden or attract pests if left in its original packaging.
Best methods for long-term food storage
Several techniques ensure food remains fresh and safe for years:
1. Vacuum sealing
Vacuum sealers remove oxygen, slowing spoilage and preventing insect infestations. Ideal for sturdy foods like beans or rice, vacuum sealing works best when double-bagged to prevent punctures from sharp-edged items (like pasta). However, bags should be checked annually for air leaks.
2. Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers
Mylar bags paired with oxygen absorbers create an impermeable barrier against moisture and pests. These lightweight, flexible bags fit inside 5-gallon buckets for bulk storage and can be used independently for smaller portions. Oxygen absorbers (measured by cubic centimeters) are essential for grains and dried goods but unnecessary for sugar, salt and honey.
3. Food-grade buckets
Heavy-duty plastic buckets are ideal for bulk storage but should be lined with Mylar bags or divided into smaller portions for practicality. Once opened, contents should be used within six months or resealed. Gamma Seal lids provide easy access while maintaining airtight protection.
4. Canning jars
Glass jars sealed with vacuum attachments are perfect for smaller quantities or crushable foods like crackers. Though breakable, they offer visibility and reusability. Store jars in dark places to prevent light degradation.
5. Repurposed containers
Clean, dry 2-liter soda bottles can store items like popcorn or rice, offering a free and space-efficient option. BrightU.AI's Enoch engine also explains that preppers can reuse sturdy plastic containers like margarine tubs to store measured portions of soups, stocks or leftovers, while sanitized two-liter bottles can hold grains, beans and legumes for long-term food security. These repurposed containers help with portion control, prevent spoilage and keep food organized in off-grid or emergency situations.
Avoiding pitfalls: Dry pack canning debunked
Some survivalists advocate "dry pack" or "oven canning"—i.e., heating dry foods in jars to kill pests before sealing. However, this method fails to remove oxygen, doesn’t prevent light exposure and risks glass breakage. Freezing sealed containers for a week is far more effective for eliminating insect eggs without nutrient loss.
Building a long-term food storage system requires planning, the right materials and an understanding of which methods work best for different foods. By repackaging staples in Mylar bags, vacuum-sealed containers and food-grade buckets, households can ensure a reliable, nutrient-rich food supply even in the face of prolonged emergencies. Whether preparing for short-term disruptions or long-term self-sufficiency, proper storage transforms ordinary pantry items into a lifeline for the future.

If You Need to Survive in the Wild, You Need These
by Eric Beuning
September 19, 2024

Departing the modern world to live in the wild isn’t the sort of thing you want to do on a whim. To keep from ending up like Chris McCandless, you need to pair the right gear with your skill set.
For the purposes of this article, I’m going to assume you have your basic hunting kit already figured out. You know what kind of rifle and shotgun you need to handle bit game in your area. I’m also assuming that you’ve got the right tent or other shelter to meet your needs along with a sleeping bag rated to the lowest temps in the area.
I’m also assuming you’ve got the basic clothing items figured out. You know to bring a proper hat for the weather, and you’ve got enough socks to make sure you can always keep your feet dry.
For the purposes of this article, we’re going to look at some wilderness survival items you might be tempted to leave behind or take a shortcut on to save some money. We’ll also look a spin through some nuts-and-bolts items that you might want to tweak or what sets one type apart from the others.
A Proper Compass
Getting lost is arguably the number one reason people get into trouble in the wild.

I had a cousin who got lost on a back country hunting trip in Montana using the same compass my dad used to have glued to the dash of his minivan!
If you’re going to try to live in the wild, you need a proper compass with features like adjustable declination, sighting mirror, and a clinometer.
This will let you make your own map, or justify your position based on the tallest landmarks in the area.
Related: Essential Survival Know-Hows Modern People Have Forgotten
I also recommend one that has some sort of low-light or illumination feature. The last thing you want to do is drop a buck at sunset, then get lost because you can’t read your compass at a glance while dragging it back to camp.
Good Knives
My great-grandfather considered himself one of the last mountain men. The saying he passed down through me to my daughter is “Never go into the woods with less than a knife.”
I recommend two knives. The first is a high-quality folding pocketknife for simple things like cutting food or whittling a stick. The other is the knife that does all the real work, and bushcraft.
A Quality Hatchet
After a knife a good hatchet is arguably the next most important tool to bring with you for surviving in the wild. You can use it to chop wood and improvise it as a hammer or other bushcraft jobs.
In my twenties I beat up a lot of so-called quality hatchets until the handle or the wedge would give up the ghost. If you’re going to survive in the wild, I would go with a hatchet that has a high carbon steel head, and a fiberglass handle.
Good Cordage
Good cordage is absolutely essential if you plan on living in the wild for more than a few days. I’m a big fan of 550 rope as a general-purpose rope.
It’s got the weight capacity you need to handle most functional things like a bear hang or reinforcing a ridge pole. While also being small enough to fit in your pack.
I don’t like 550 for any sort of climbing just because the narrow diameter is hard on the hands, and I’m not a master climber. If you’re going to survive somewhere that will require making steep elevation changes or you need to do a lot of climbing, I would also make sure to put some bona fide climbing rope in your pack.
A Waterproof Lighter
I know seeing waterproof lighter on the list might seem a little strange. I’m going with the assumption that you already know how to manually start a fire manually. You probably already know how to protect your fire with an ember bundle.
A waterproof lighter sealed in a zip top bag is for those unforeseen times when a massive downpour or a flash flood puts your fire out. In a desperate moment like that, you’re wet, and hurting. The last thing you want to do is rub two damp sticks together. Otherwise it’s never used for casual fire starting.
Fishing Gear
Growing up in the land of 10,000 lakes, I think fishing gear is absolutely essential for surviving in the wild. While I have the deepest respect for fly fishing, I would rather bring a fiberglass rod around 5’6” with two open faced reels.
A small fishing net with a collapsible handle is also a good idea. It keeps you from losing fish at the shore or side of the canoe. You can even repurpose it for other things around camp or when scrounging.
Wilderness Long-Term Survival Guide
Wilderness Long-Term Survival Guide is the first handbook ever that helps people NOT just to survive in the wild, BUT to LIVE there!
You can use it to turn the wild into your second home and become self-reliant in nature long term.
With this guide, you can make the wild your bug-out location that will keep you safe even in the worst of times.
If a major crisis hits and you need to head for the woods, with the knowledge in this book you can rebuild everything from scratch, just like our ancestors who chose a piece of land in the middle of nowhere and restarted their lives.
A Dry Bag
A good size dry bag is a great way to keep your clothes and essential items dry in wet conditions. I took a five-day wilderness retreat in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and just used a big dry bag as a dresser for all my clothes.
Then crammed my sleeping bag and memory foam pillow into it each morning. Really came in handy when a tree branch ripped a hole in my tent during a storm!
Back Up Food with a Limit
Even if you’re planning to hunt and fish for your primary food source, you still need to bring some staples with you to survive in the wild. This might be a bag or rice, or even a cache of self-heating MREs.
You need a backup food source for those times when the fish unexpectedly moved to deep water, or the big game stay on the other side of the ridge for a whole week. You also need to set a limit on how far you let that food stash dwindle.
Once the rice in the bag gets below the line you drew on it, you pack up and head to greener pastures. That might be heading home with your tail tucked between your legs, or to the trapper cabin in the next drainage over to ask for help. Whatever it is, when you hit that line, you make the safe choice without question!
Tarp
A good tarp is worth it’s weight in platinum when it comes to living in the wild. You slip it under your tent to keep the floor dry in wet conditions. You can use it to create a temporary shelter if the weather moves in while you’re glassing for game.
Related: Shelter Mistakes That Can Get You Killed
You can use it to create a rain catch or create a wind break. You can even use a small, dedicated tarp to give you a clean workspace when field dressing or butchering an animal.
I recommend tarps made from ripstop nylon or polyester to prevent tears. A polyurethane coating or silicone treatment for water proofing. It should also have good grommets that aren’t going to rip out under modest tension.
Reliable Traps
Trapping relatively low energy output, with the chance to bring in some valuable protein. If you’re going to be out in the wild for a while, make sure to use that journal we talked about to note small game, and then trap responsibly so you don’t wipe out the population of rabbits, squirrels, or muskrats you’re trapping.
In a pinch homemade snares and dead fall traps sound easy, and will minimize what you have to pack out. However, they’re also very unreliable. You burn a lot more energy making and setting those traps than you do a manmade trap.
First Aid Kit & Medical Supplies
The longer you plan to live in the wild, and the more remote your location is, the more extensive you want your first aid kit and medical supplies to be. Most of my wilderness retreats have been within an hour’s hike of where I parked the car and another half hour drive to the main road.
People knew where I was, and I could even call out for trouble once I got to the car. So, I didn’t take much beyond a standard hiking first-aid kit with me.
My Uncle Donny lived 12 times over the horizon, in East Texas. He kept a small medical clinic with him.
He once famously amputated his own index and middle fingers on his left hand at the middle joint. Then stitched them using his Marine Corps medical training and the suture kit from his medical supplies.
One item you should never forget adding to your medical kit is antibiotics. Having a stockpile of antibiotics is crucial. Without antibiotics, your chances of survival during a crisis go way down, especially if you are in the wilderness. You can’t generally buy antibiotics over the counter, so here is how to stockpile antibiotics without a prescription.
Subsonic 22 Rifle Ammo
When most people think of wilderness survival it conjures up an image of a guy lugging a freshly shot deer, or black bear back to his hunting shack. Let’s imagine you go out hoping to bag a deer, and you get skunked. On the walk back you spot a chunky squirrel or a tasty-looking rabbit to fill your desperately empty stomach.
Pulling out the .30-06 is going to turn it into pink mist and blow out any game living in the area. Even a 410 shotgun or a 22 rifle might make so much noise that it will spook out the deer you’re hoping to get tomorrow.
My uncle Donny’s trick for a moment like this was to carry a 22-rifle loaded with subsonic ammo. So, when he did get skunked deer hunting, he’d pop a squirrel or a rabbit on the walk back to his shack.
A Foraging Book
A book that helps you accurately determine the safe forage foods in the wild area you’ll be living is invaluable. The last thing you want to do is accidentally poison yourself when you’re already so far out from civilization.
Instead of relying on information from the internet, I recommend getting The Forager’s Guide to Wild Foods by Dr. Nicole Apelian. In this book, she poured over 20 years of plant knowledge and her first-hand experiences in both making natural remedies and finding foods in the wild.
The Loyalty of a Fine Dog
You could rightfully argue that you don’t absolutely need a good dog with you to survive in the wild. It even counts as yet another mouth to feed beyond your own. If you had a poodle or a poorly trained schnauzer, you’d be absolutely correct, and I wouldn’t argue with you for a second.
If you have something like my well-trained golden retriever and German shepherd cross with hunting bloodlines, a good dog at your side will your wilderness survival experience to the next level. I spend an hour a day in the wilderness preserve with my dog, and our communication rivals any scene from I am Legend.
Not only will a man’s best friend bump up your hunting success, but it gives you some much-needed company. To survive in the wild, you need to keep your mind right. A good dog will keep your emotions pointed in the right direction when you’re in the toughest of times. It will also give you someone to talk to other than yourself.
