Survival Communication During SHTF – Midland 75-822

In a SHTF scenario, communication is going to be vital. During Hurricane Sandy, there were people charging a $10 fee for people to charge their cell phones. People paid the fee because they were in desperate need to get in touch with their loved ones.

I bought the Midland 75-822 several month ago, but never posted a review. I’m still learning how to use it, so forgive me if this review isn’t as in depth as you might like it to be. You can read the reviews on Amazon, and they will help you fill in anything that I’ve missed.

    The Good

The price is decent at $79.00 and it has pretty good reviews. It’s very lightweight and pretty easy to use. I think my favorite feature is the automatic scanner, which lets me find active channels, hands free. For those of you that travel at night, it has a strong green back light that allows you to see in the dark. In fact, the light is so powerful that you can use it in the day time too, and see it clearly.

    The Bad

Without the extra antenna, you only get a few miles communicating radius. However, with the addition of the Wilson Little Wil antenna, you can extend that radius up to 10-30 miles depending on weather conditions.

    The Ugly

I don’t think I’ve discovered anything that I find unbearable. Perhaps the only thing would be how easily you can accidentally change the memory settings for channels, but I always use auto scan, so its not that big of a deal for me.

    Total Investment

If you are on a small budget, save up for this one. Its definitely worth adding.

    1. Midland 75-822 ($79.00)
    2. Wilson Little Will ( $35.68 )
    3. Bestek AC to DC Adapter ($14.09)*

*The Bestek adapter is only needed if you want to use your radio in the house without using batteries.
