SHTF essentials: What to pack in a pet preparedness kit

(Natural News) According to data, at least 70 percent of American households have pets. Many of these pets are also treated like family so if you’re a prepper, it makes sense to pack a pet preparedness kit or bug-out bag for your four-legged best friend.

Below are some items you may want to include in a pet emergency kit:
Pet food for at least two weeks, dog bowls

You need at least two weeks’ worth of pet food so you have enough to feed your dog if you are dealing with a long-term SHTF scenario.
Buy folding bowls that are easy to pack. Remember that your dog also needs water to drink.
Leash, harness, carrier and transport case

You don’t want to lose your pet in the panic after SHTF so make sure you have a leash, harness, carrier and transport case for your dog or cat.
Dog shoes/paw protectors, warm clothes

If you live in a state that gets cold, get warm clothes and dog shoes or paw protectors for your pet. This will help protect them from harsh weather conditions or rough terrain.
Extra pet medications

An old dog or a pet with health issues will need at least two weeks to a month’s worth of extra medications. If you’re packing for a trip or an emergency, let your vet know so they can help you stock up on pet meds.
Your pet’s tag or collar should also include notes on what medications they’re on. If you can’t get extra medications for your pets, make a list of vets nearby so you can go to them if you need more after SHTF. (Related: Do you have a first aid kit for your pets?)
Pet first aid kit

Did you know that you can save your dog with pet CPR? Before disaster strikes, learn how to do pet CPR properly.
You also have to prepare a pet first aid kit with items you need to provide emergency medical aid for your pet if there’s an accident. The kit will include similar items in a first aid kit for humans, like antiseptic cream and bandages for treating wounds.
But your pet first aid kit should also come with additional items that are pet-specific, such as:

• Anti-worm medications

• Flea and tick control items
• Flea combs and tick tweezers
• No chew bandage

Pet bed, toys and blankets

Like humans, pets will need comfort during a stressful disaster scenario. If you are bugging out to a safe location, bring their bed, toys and blankets so they can feel at home.
Pack some of their old toys and items so you don’t take away their current toys.
Poop bags or kitty litter

When SHTF, you still need to keep things clean and sanitary to prevent sickness among your family and pets. Bring poop bags and kitty litter for pets so your campsite stays clean.
Recent printed pet photos

If things get too chaotic, you might lose your pet when SHTF. This is why you need recently printed pet photos so it’s easier to look for them and ask people if anyone has seen them in the area.
The printed photos of your pet should also include any identifying marks, like unusual fur coloration or scars.
Copies of pet medical records

If you need to temporarily leave your pet at a shelter, you will need updated copies of your pet’s medical records.
Copy of feeding schedules and any behavioral issues

If you have to ask a family member or friend to keep an eye on your pet for a couple of days, give them a printed, detailed care schedule and notes to help them take care of your pet.
Pet microchip information

Microchip information is important and there are a lot of databases out there. Check who your animal is registered with and if your pet doesn’t have a microchip yet, get them one before SHTF so you can find them easily.
Print out the microchip information and put a tag on your pet’s collar saying they’re microchipped.
Regular vet/emergency vet contact information

Get the contact information of your regular vet and an emergency vet.
If your pet gets injured, friends, family members or boarding shelters can quickly check who to contact. Make sure emergency contacts also know that they’re your emergency contacts so they can expect a call if something happens.
List of other emergency contact numbers

If something happens to you, your pet documents should also include a list of family, friends, shelters and boarding centers that could take your pet in an emergency.
You also need an updated list of shelters that take pets so you don’t waste time calling around.

Activated charcoal has many survival uses, such as filtering water. You can buy activated charcoal for you survival stockpile. Alternatively, you can make it at home.One pound of activated charcoal costs $12 to $15 at the grocery, while making your own costs less than $1 per pound. For $20, you can have enough activated charcoal on hand for bartering or personal use after disaster strikes. (h/t to PrimalSurvivor.net)
You can make your charcoal to activate, but the extreme temperatures it takes to burn hardwood down to charcoal make it very time-consuming and energy-intensive. Instead, it's better to buy and use a 20 lb. bag of hardwood charcoal.
Supplies you need to make activate charcoal

Here are the items you will need to activate charcoal at home.
Calcium chloride/Pickle Crisp
If you're making a lot of activated charcoal, it's more economical to buy calcium chloride in larger tubs. Alternatively, you can use the Ball Pickle Crisp sold at grocery stores, but it might be more expensive. If you don't have calcium chloride, you can use lemon juice as an alternative.
Charcoal
You can use your preferred brand of hardwood charcoal briquettes. You will need pure hardwood charcoal, so don't get charcoal that has been soaked in lighter fluid or has other additives.
Glass jar
If you don't have a glass jar, use a non-aluminum mixing pot with a solid lid or a regular canning jar. This is important because mixing the calcium chloride causes a reaction that releases heat, and aluminum is a reactive metal. You don’t want to get this on your hands, so you need a glass jar or a sturdy container that won't leak. (Related: Prepper essentials: What to include in your SHTF first aid kit.)

You will also need eye protection such as safety goggles; cheesecloth or white sheet; cookie sheet or flat pan; water and measuring cup; and storage container for the finished activated charcoal
Activating the charcoal

Follow the steps below to activate charcoal.

1. Get your charcoal and powder it. Do this by smashing it carefully with a hammer or using a mortar and pestle. Transfer the powdered charcoal to a glass or stainless steel bowl.
2. Make a 25 percent solution of calcium chloride with water. Note that one hundred grams of calcium chloride should be dissolved in 300 mL of water. This equals 3.5 ounces of calcium chloride and 1.3 cups of water in ounces.
3. Make a paste by carefully adding the calcium chloride solution to the powdered charcoal. Stir until you have a spreadable paste. Drain any leftover solution.
4. Let the mixture dry in the bowl for 24 hours.
5. Spread the dried material on a clean white sheet or several pieces of cheesecloth. Don’t use materials with detergents or scents.
6. Rinse the dried material with clean water and catch all the water that goes through. Filter this water through a coffee filter to recover the carbon you would otherwise lose.
7. Put the coffee filter on a cookie sheet with the rest of the activated charcoal.
8. Bake the rinsed charcoal at 250 F for 30 minutes or until all moisture is gone.
9. Once done, cool and break apart the charcoal. Store it in an airtight and waterproof jar.

Having an assortment of survival gear is nice, but when SHTF, you will also need clean drinking water in your stockpile.Before disaster strikes, learn how to store and purify water for your daily needs. (h/t to BackdoorSurvival.com)
Clean water is something that many people, especially non-preppers, take for granted. When dealing with an emergency, you will have one less thing to worry about if you know that you have access to clean drinking water, so it's essential to learn how to find, store and purify water for your stockpile.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends storing at least one gallon of water per person and pet, per day, for a minimum of three days. However, preppers know that you might need more than that when SHTF.
A more reasonable recommendation is that you store enough water for at least two weeks. That means if you are prepping for two people, you would need 28 gallons. This much water should cover your basic needs for drinking, food preparation and hygiene. (Related: HRS solutions: Must-have survival drinks for your pantry.)
DIY water storage

To save money on water storage, you can start your stockpile by filling thoroughly washed plastic or glass containers with tap water and sealing them tightly.
Follow these steps to store water for emergency use:

1. Thoroughly clean plastic bottles and jugs with dishwashing soap and water. Rinse them well to get rid of any residual soap.
2. Sanitize the containers by adding a solution of one teaspoon of unscented liquid household chlorine bleach to one quart of water. Make sure that the bleach you are using is fresh.
3. Swish the sanitizing solution in the containers to cover all interior surfaces. Sanitize the lids and caps as well.
4. After sanitizing the containers and caps, thoroughly rinse out the bleach solution with clean water.
5. Wear latex or nitrile gloves to maintain sanitation and avoid contaminating the caps by touching the inside of them with your fingers. Fill all sanitized containers to the top with tap water.
6. Add two drops of non-scented liquid household chlorine bleach to the water, then tightly close the containers using the original caps.
7. Label the outside of the bottles with the date using a permanent marker.
8. Store the containers in a cool, dark place.

As a precaution, rotate your water supply every six months to a year. Dump the water, re-sanitize the jugs and start the process all over. If you have the space, mark the jugs as "non-potable" and save the water for non-drinking emergency purposes.

Even if you're not a prepper, you should think about stocking up on emergency foods for different survival scenarios. This is important because fueling your body with nutritious foods and staying hydrated during a crisis can differ from your regular diet during "normal" times.Below are some suggestions on what you should have in your survival stockpile before disaster strikes. Consider the nutritional value of the food you're buying

If the emergency is disease-related, such as during the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) in 2020, you and your family need to eat nutritious foods that will help support your overall health. And because you'll have a limited supply in your emergency preparedness kit or survival stockpile at home, the higher-quality foods you eat the better.
Barry Swanson, professor emeritus of food science at Washington State University, has advised that you will need calories during "a disaster or an emergency."

But that doesn't mean you can only eat bland foods when SHTF. Plan ahead and make a list of non-perishable items that you can use to make healthy, tasty meals during emergencies.
Below are some items for your survival stockpile:
Bottled water
You should drink enough water every day to stay hydrated. Ensure that you have at least a three-day supply of clean drinking water, and remember that you need at least one gallon per person daily.
If you are normally active, you can prevent dehydration by drinking at least a half gallon of water each day. You can use the other half gallon for cooking and washing.
Don't forget to stock up on clean water for your pets and livestock.
Canned fish
Canned food such as chicken, tuna, turkey or salmon will usually last at least two years in the pantry. Canned fish is also a great source of essential protein.
If you're stocking up on canned food, make sure you have a manual can opener and an extra one for emergencies.
Canned fruits and vegetables
While fresh produce is great for a balanced diet, canned fruits and vegetables are a great alternative when dealing with survival scenarios.
They can provide you with essential nutrients, making them an ideal hurricane food or natural disaster option.
Alternatively, you can stock up on freeze-dried fruits and vegetables if you want to add more variety to your stockpile. Compared to canned options, freeze-dried fruits and vegetables can last for several years in your stockpile if stored properly.
Nuts and trail mixes
Nuts and trail mixes are high-energy foods. They're also a convenient and healthy snack for different emergencies like a hurricane or tornado.
Buy vacuum-packed containers, which prevent the nuts from oxidizing and losing their freshness over time.
Peanut butter
Comforting and a great source of energy, peanut butter is full of "good" fats and protein. Unless the jar indicates otherwise, you don't have to refrigerate peanut butter after opening.
