Paul and Romney's Secret De-Facto Alliance

Submitted by Benjamin Vander Jagt on Wed, 03/21/2012 - 10:47
Delegates

While none is stated, there's an obvious cooperation between the Paul and Romney campaigns. Supporters on the ground are working together to prevent Santorum from running away with delegates. The two candidates have lobbed softballs at eachother or avoided criticizing each other altogether. As Ron Paul said in an interview with Jay Leno, it's "so secret, we don't know a lot about it."
The truth is that simple. Just as Paul famously says, "I don't like parties. I like coalitions." They do work together when it's towards a common end. I believe that the small thread that does tie the two together is that that both want to replace Obama, and they both realize that there's no pathway to do this without Paul.
I'm not saying that the two have made any plans or deals toward this end. They are both smart enough to see the winds of change, and Paul knows to stand fast, and Romney knows he's in the wrong place.
Mitt Romney is wrong on many issues, and he's made personal stabs at Ron Paul in the past. However, as opposed to Santorum and Gingrich, Romney's not arrogant. He isn't foolish enough to discount Paul. He desperately wants Paul's supporters.
What do you think the Romney Campaign muses about?
They know that just giving Paul a cabinet position will not win the Paul supporters. Even if Paul were to abandon his principles and run as his VP, his supporters would not vote for the team.
Ahh, but what if Gov. Romney abandons his principles? He's obviously willing to do that for political purposes. What if he were to make a deal with the Paul campaign that he will change his foreign policy position, support a full audit of the Fed, and end the drug war as a concession in order to have Dr. Paul as his running mate? Like the good doctor said, the other candidates are gradually turning his way.
Mitt Romney isn't stupid. He has to see the problem he faces, being unable to win the presidency fighting against Ron Paul. It's not outside the realm of reason that Mitt might want to be Paul's VP. If your goal was the presidency and it has taken you this long to get there, wouldn't you like to have eight years as vice president, followed by eight years as president?
The great thing about this unintended alliance between the Paul and Romney campaigns is that it only makes our goals more clear. We simply have to keep voting our conscience and spreading truth. By keeping the "How Would Ron Vote" policy, we will be the loose-knit but powerful force that a real grass-roots movement should be. We courageous few control the whole game. We just have to stand firm, no matter what.
Ron Paul has already won. It may be that the worst blow to the Romney campaign would be for the Paul campaign to lose.

"The Three Political Parties of America" Robin Koerner

Submitted by Zak Carter on Wed, 03/21/2012 - 16:50 Daily Paul Liberty Forum

There are three political parties in the United States today, and they are all fielding candidates for the presidency.
The parties are the Republicrats, the Scared Religionists, and the Freedom and Peace Party.
By far the largest party is the Republicrats, who have held sway with their current platform since at least the 1940s. They are offering two candidates for president in 2012: their names are Mitt Romney and Barack Obama.
Being such a large party, they have adopted a clever means of ensuring that they hold power perpetually: they split themselves into two wings called "Democrat" and "Republican." This rather clever setup allows them to compete with each other in the formal competitions of American democracy by emphasizing different pieces of the platform, while ensuring that one of the wings will always hold sway, allowing them to implement their shared social democratic platform.
And what is this platform? It is a corporate socialist one. They stand for enlarging government, the replacement of individual civil rights with centralized programs, the redistribution of wealth from working individuals to the non-working but mostly corporate and special interests (their main sponsors) and a military presence throughout most of the world.

A Ron Paul day in LA

Submitted by gee_blee on Wed, 03/21/2012 - 09:05 Ron Paul 2012

Brian Doherty at Reason:

Still-fighting Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul hit Los Angeles today for two fundraisers and an appearence on NBC's Tonight Show starring Jay Leno.

His lunch appearance was before well over 150 folk paying $350 a head at the Burbank Airport Marriott. The attendees got a chance for a personal photo with Paul, plus a half-hour speech with 15 minutes of Q and A from the candidate.

Everyone seems happy to stand near Paul for their photo; a couple of people force hugs on him which he gamely accepts. He is thanked, thanked often, and told "You are so right" by his fans. This crowd is young-skewing; no more than a handful of over-60s, and the usual range from mohawked Hispanic young men to well-composed Asian woman, on the whole a crowd more well-dressed and bourgeois in appearance than the typical Paul roadside sign-waving crowd.

Paul's talk was standardly non-standard--not canned and in his usual discursive lack-of-order, but nothing anything shocking or surprising to his fans.

Among the highlights: Continue

Ron Paul to Hold Giant Town Hall Meeting in Maryland

Engages supporters and undecided voters at the University of Maryland in College Park

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – Next week 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul will hold a giant town hall meeting in Maryland, continuing the 12-term Congressman from Texas’ tradition of attracting large numbers of supporters and undecided voters.

Ron Paul’s college campus town hall meeting, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Wednesday, March 28th at the University of Maryland. The event will commence at 7:00 p.m. EST inside the University of Maryland’s Ritchie Coliseum, located at the intersection of Baltimore Avenue and Rossborough Lane, College Park, MD 20742. Doors open to the public at 6:30 p.m. To reserve your seat for the event featuring Dr. Paul and enter the venue 30 minutes earlier than the general public, please click here.

“The University of Maryland chapter is one of our strongest in the country, recruiting more than 2,000 supporters for the campaign so far. Supporters are working tirelessly to organize this upcoming event so Ron Paul can speak directly to students and Maryland voters about his ‘Plan to Restore America,’ an economic blueprint that includes cutting $1 trillion in his first year in office and balancing the budget within three years,” said Edward King, National Youth Director for the Ron Paul 2012 Presidential Campaign.

“Ron Paul is the only candidate who will solve our debt crisis. That’s why he attracts so many young people, and that’s why he is the best candidate to defeat President Obama in November,” added Mr. King.

Ron Paul’s campus town hall meeting at the University of Maryland is being organized in part by ‘Youth for Ron Paul’ (YFP). YPF, an initiative of the Ron Paul 2012 Presidential campaign, launched in September 2011, and since its inception students nationwide have organized 588 chapters and recruited more than 50,000 people. Business Insider: “Ron Paul is Winning Another Caucus”

Reports Business Insider’s Grace Wyler:

While Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum duke it out for delegates in high-profile primaries like Illinois and Pennsylvania, Ron Paul’s quiet pursuit of delegates appears to be paying off.

Early results from Missouri’s caucuses this weekend show that the long-shot presidential candidate is significantly outperforming his rivals in the race for delegates. Senior campaign advisors tell Business Insider that Paul appears to have picked up the majority of Missouri’s delegates, despite having lost the state’s nonbinding primary to Rick Santorum.

“We did do real well in Missouri,” Benton said.

“Some county conventions are still going on, but we’ve got good turnout.

Anecdotal evidence shows we won multiple caucuses, and it looks like we’re going to pick up the majority of delegates.”

Although the final delegate tally won’t be determined until the state party convention this spring, Paul’s success in Missouri is a validation of his low-key caucus strategy. The Paul campaign has recently shifted its focus to winning unbound delegates in caucus states, where delegates are elected at state conventions rather than by the popular vote…

Ron Paul On Leno: We Will Win Conscience Votes At Brokered Convention

Congressman determined to go all the way in GOP race

Steve Watson
Infowars.com
March 21, 2012

Gop presidential candidate Ron Paul appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night and said that he will not waver on the road to the GOP national convention, despite calls from the establishment and the media for him to quit the race.

The Congressman discussed his strategy of gaining a sizeable amount of delegates and also the very real possibility of a brokered convention.

Explaining that if no candidate outright wins on the first ballot in August, a likely scenario based on caucus results so far, delegates would no longer be committed to vote for their previously declared candidate in subsequent votes.

“The second go around, they can go with their conscience,” Paul said, “then, I believe, we’ll get a lot of the votes.

This past weekend, results from Missouri’s caucuses show that Paul is significantly outperforming his rivals in the race for delegates. The campaign believes that it has picked up the majority of delegates in the state.

“We did do real well in Missouri,” Campaign manager Jesse Benton said.

“Some county conventions are still going on, but we’ve got good turnout.

Anecdotal evidence shows we won multiple caucuses, and it looks like we’re going to pick up the majority of delegates.

The Paul campaign also believes that Rick Santorum’s campaign is “scrambling” to keep up with Paul, but is lagging behind due to lack of organisation.

“He does have some party insiders and establishment people who have been lending him their organizations, but he doesn’t have one.” Benton told Business Insider.

Revealing that the Paul campaign’s internal count has Santorum in third place, Benton added “His consultants should stop misleading him. They are destroying his credibility.”

Another topic raised during Paul’s discussion with Jay Leno included Secret Service protection for the other candidates. Joking that if he had to he would taking the code name “Bulldog”, the Congressman explained that he doesn’t want any Secret Service protection because it’s “a form a welfare.”

“You know, you’re having the taxpayers pay to take care of somebody and I’m an ordinary citizen and I would think I should pay for my own protection and it costs,” Paul told Leno.

“I think, more than $50,000 a day to protect those individuals. It’s a lot of money.” the Congressman added.
Paul also addressed the ongoing conspiracy theory perpetuated by the mainstream media that he may have cut a deal with Mitt Romney.

“It’s very secret, because he and I don’t know a whole lot about it,” said Paul.

“I have to consider whether I want to be a czar or head of the Federal Reserve, and I’m toying with the idea of which one to take,” Paul joked.“And then you can eliminate your own job,” Leno retorted.

Ron Paul blasts Obama for killing Americans

RT
March 20, 2012
Presidential hopeful Ron Paul has publically attacked the Obama administration’s abolishment of due process in a new editorial, calling the move a turning point in American history.

Responding to Attorney General Eric Holder’s recent justification for the extrajudicial killings of three American citizens on foreign soil, Republican Party candidate Ron Paul has penned a scathing op-ed condemning the White House for circumventing the US Constitution. Earlier this month Holder spoke at Chicago’s Northwestern Law School to discuss last year’s execution of alleged terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki and two other US-born clerics in Yemen, a decision he says the White House still defends despite criticism from citizens and lawmakers alike.

Although both US President Barack Obama and the CIA signed off on the airstrike that killed the American citizens, Washington has been relatively quiet on the matter until Holder spoke earlier this month.

After Attorney General Holder justified the assassination of Americans, a congressional inquiry revealed that Robert Mueller, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, wasn’t certain that the same laws could be applied to killing Americans on US soil. With the FBI and Oval Office both hiding behind vague verbiage to allow the assassination of their own citizens, Ron Paul is critiquing what he calls a complete disregard of the Constitution.

“It is particularly bizarre to hear the logic of the administration claiming the right to target its citizens according to some secret selection process, when we justified our attacks against Iraq and Libya because their leaders supposedly were targeting their own citizens,” writes Rep. Paul. “We also now plan a covert war against Syria for the same reason.”

The congressman adds in his explanation that he is all for justice brought on those that threaten America or its people, but that the US Department of Justice has — and should continue — to view these issues on a case-by-case basis. On the contrary, argues Paul, it seems as if the president puts himself above all other branches of the federal government, essentially eliminating the system of checks and balances constructed by America’s forefathers.

Holder, says Paul, “tells us that this is not a violation of the due process requirements of our Constitution because the President himself embodies ‘due process’ as he unilaterally determines who is to be targeted. As Holder said, ‘a careful and thorough executive branch review of the facts in a case amounts to “due process.”’ That means that the administration believes it is the President himself who is to be the judge, jury and executioner.”

“Our civilian court system, with the guarantee of real due process, judicial review, and a fair trial, is our strength, not a weakness,” writes Rep. Paul. “It is not an impediment to be sidestepped in the push for convictions or assassinations, but rather a process that guarantees that fundamental right to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”

After the CIA ordered and executed a “targeted kill” on Awlaki and alleged al-Qaeda operative Samir Khan last year, Ron Paul responded the same day to condemn the assassinations. “Nobody knows if he ever killed anybody,” Paul said at time. “If the American people accept this blindly and casually…I think that’s sad.”

Now that the US has formally acknowledged that it stands by the killing months later, the congressman seems to be even more concerned with the turn America is taking, describing Holder’s explanation as something “history likely will record as a turning point.”
