Border Patrol Agent Shot and Killed in Desolate Area Near Mexico
    Friday, July 24, 2009

CAMPO, Calif. — A U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot to death in a remote area near the Mexican border as he tracked suspected illegal immigrants or drug smugglers, authorities said Friday.

The agent was identified as Robert Wimer Rosas in a statement from Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. The Border Patrol declined to release further details until a news conference scheduled for Friday afternoon.

"I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of one of our own," Napolitano said.

The story was updated at 12:21 PM Pacific time

Napolitano said she had directed the department to use its full resources to aid in the murder investigation.

The FBI also is investigating, spokesman Darrell Foxworth said.

The agent spotted a suspicious group of people Thursday night in the Campo area in San Diego County near the border and called for additional agents to help track them, U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Daryl Reed said.

When the suspicious group split up, the agent followed some of the suspects on his own, Reed said.

Other agents lost radio contact with him shortly after 9 p.m. then heard gunshots. They found the agent, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department said he was shot in the head.

Law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and Mexico searched both sides of the border but failed to find any suspects.

Statement by U. S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Jayson Ahern on Death of Border Patrol Agent Robert Rosas

    (Friday, July 24, 2009)

Washington - “Last night, Border Patrol Chief Daavid Aguilar and I were devastated to learn about the senseless killing of one of our young Border Patrol Agents, Robert Rosas. Agent Rosas’ murder is a tragic reminder of the ever-present dangers CBP officers, Air & Marine and Border Patrol agents face as they protect our nation’s borders.

“By his service and sacrifice, Agent Rosas joins a long line of law enforcement officers and agents who have served—and died—in the law enforcement tradition of honor, valor and dedication to duty.

“The FBI, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, our brothers and sisters in ICE, and the government of Mexico all are working with CBP in an international effort to locate and bring to justice the perpetrators of this atrocious act.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Rosas family at this time —and always—and they have our solemn promise that we will do everything possible to find—and bring to justice—those responsible for this heinous crime.â€

Border Patrol agent killer may have been injured

By GILLIAN FLACCUS, The Associated Press
    2:20 p.m. July 24, 2009

SAN DIEGO — Authorities investigating the shooting death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent say evidence indicates at least one suspect in the killing was significantly injured and could be seeking medical treatment on either side of the U.S.-Mexico border.

FBI Special Agent Keith Slotter said Friday investigators are checking hospitals and other medical facilities in Mexico and the United States in hopes of tracking down the suspect or suspects who killed agent Robert Rosas late Thursday after he responded to a Border Patrol call near Campo.

Slotter says there was no evidence of drugs recovered at the scene, but investigators are not ruling out an attack by drug smugglers or illegal immigrants trying to cross the border.

Slotter says Rosas was dead by the time other agents responded.

    Border patrol agent killed!!

What drives me crazy about this is that if the situation had been reversed and the BP agent had been the shooter, he would have been sent to prison for 10 years (i.e. Ramos and Campean)
