Up next, important new information about murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent, murdered while protecting our border with Mexico.

    (COMMERCIAL BREAK)

DOBBS: A U.S. Border Patrol agent was murdered last night while protecting the people and the border of the United States. Border Patrol agent, Robert Rosas, is the first agent to be killed in the line of duty this year. The shooting took place in a remote mountain area in San Diego County which is, of course, right on the border. Casey Wian has the report from Campo, California.

    (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

CASEY WIAN, CNN NEWS CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): About a mile over this hill is the United States border with Mexico. It was here that border parole agent Robert Rosas was shot several times and killed Thursday night while pursuing a group of suspected drug smugglers or smugglers of illegal immigrants.

RICHARD BARLOW, BORDER PATROL SECTOR CHIEF: Approximately 9:00 out in the east county in, Campo area, Border Patrol agent, Robert Rosas, was murdered by assailants at the international border.

WIAN: The Border Patrol would not allow us closer to the scene of the shooting because federal and local law enforcement agents were still investigating.

DARYL REED, BORDER PATROL SPOKESMAN: They were tracking a group and the group broke up and so, the agents broke up to follow them. They lost contact with him, and unfortunately by the time they found him, he had suffered from some -- from multiple gunshot wounds, and I believe he was pronounced dead on the scene.

WIAN: Border Patrol sources tell LOU DOBBS TONIGHT the suspected shooter or shooters fled across the border. U.S. officials have requested and are receiving assistance from the Mexican government. A cross-border manhunt has so far yielded no suspects. The FBI said they have evidence one of the suspects was bleeding and wounded.

KEITH SLOTTER, FBI SPECIAL AGENT IN CHARGE: We'd also like to seek the public's assistance for any information that individuals may have that would be helpful to the investigation in bringing those to justice who are responsible.

WIAN: Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano issued a statement saying:

"This act of violence will not stand, nor will any act of violence against the Border Patrol. I have directed that the full resources of the Department assist in the investigation to find and bring to justice those responsible for this inexcusable crime."

Agent Robert Rosas was 30 years old, a three-year veteran of the Border Patrol. He leaves behind a wife and two infant children. He's the first Border Patrol agent killed this year and the 40th since 1989.

    (END VIDEOTAPE)

WIAN: The FBI is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the murder of agent Rosas -- Lou.

DOBBS: Casey, thank you very much. Casey Wian reporting from Campo, California.

That was all Lou Dobbs reported or had to say on the matter?

Since about January of this year he has stopped speaking his mind on illegal immigration. I wonder what he was threatened with.

Killing of Border Patrol agent prompts multiagency manhunt

A U.S. Border Patrol helicopter flies above the area in eastern San Diego County where agent Robert Rosas, 30, was killed late Thursday night while responding to an incursion just inside the steel border fence.

U.S. and Mexican officials are searching for those responsible for the death of Robert Rosas. Tecate police say they arrested a man walking near the crime scene with a Border Patrol-issued weapon.

Reporting from San Diego -- A U.S. Border Patrol agent was fatally shot while pursuing a group of people in a remote valley about 60 miles east of San Diego, triggering a manhunt by federal, state and Mexican authorities, Homeland Security officials said Friday.

Robert Rosas, a three-year agency veteran, was responding to an incursion Thursday night just inside the steel border fence when one or more assailants opened fire, authorities said. He died at the scene.

Rosas, a 30-year-old father of two, was the first border agent to be shot and killed in the line of duty in nearly a decade, officials said. "It was a cowardly act against an agent trying to protect this country," said Rick Barlow, acting chief of the agency's San Diego sector, where flags flew at half-staff outside of headquarters in Chula Vista.

U.S. officials said they were working closely with their counterparts in Mexico. Police in Tecate, Mexico, announced late Friday that they had arrested a man walking near the crime scene with a Border Patrol-issued weapon shortly after the shooting. The man, Ernesto Parra Valenzuela, 36, was injured and was taken to a hospital, according to a news release.

The FBI said late Friday that no one had been arrested or charged in connection with the killing.

Earlier in the day, the Mexican military sent about a dozen vehicles to secure the sparsely populated area south of the border fence. Mexican federal police were also seen searching.

The attack occurred near the rural town of Campo in eastern San Diego County. The hilly, scrub-covered terrain has long been a favored spot for smugglers.

There were signs of a struggle, and at least one of the gunmen may have been injured, investigators said. Two sources with knowledge of the investigation said K-9 units tracked a blood trail to the border. The assailants took Rosas' weapon and radio, according to the sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly.

Raul Tovar, a longtime Campo resident, said he was barbecuing when gunfire rang out in the distance. "I heard two shots. Crack. Crack. First I thought it was . . . my neighbor shooting coyotes, but it sounded like large-caliber bullets."

Within minutes, scores of agents began scouring the area and two helicopters hovered with searchlights, Tovar said.

The attack occurred during a period of relative tranquillity on the San Diego County-Mexico border. Apprehensions of illegal immigrants and assaults against agents are down significantly from last year.

But agents have made numerous drug seizures in the Campo area in recent weeks, mostly at the Interstate 8 checkpoint near Pine Valley, leading some observers to speculate that frustrated smugglers are retaliating.

U.S. authorities said it is too soon say whether smugglers are escalating their tactics.

The FBI announced a $100,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the attackers. Hospitals were urged to report any suspicious people seeking treatment. "There's still a lot of work to do," said Keith Slotter, the special agent in charge of the FBI's San Diego office.

The region south of the fence is a largely lawless expanse with little to no police presence. The nearest police department is in Tecate, about 20 miles away.

The events leading up to the shooting began about 9 p.m. Thursday, when agents using night vision equipment spotted a group near the fence. Rosas and other agents, in separate vehicles, headed to the scene near Shockey Truck Trail.

Agents heard the shots and tried to contact Rosas, but his radio had gone dead. Rosas had apparently gotten out of his vehicle to chase the intruders. Pursuing suspects alone is a routine part of the job, and in most cases, they give up without incident, Border Patrol agents said. But there are obvious perils.

"He was doing what agents do out there, trying to head them off on the trail," said Chris Bauder, the president of the local branch of the Border Patrol union. "But we never know who we're going to be encountering. You don't know whether they're coming into the country to work, or looking to do harm."

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the department's full resources would be used in the investigation. "This act of violence will not stand -- nor will any act of violence against the Border Patrol," she said.

    So....

It takes a government employee getting killed for the border problem to be recognized? Thousands of Americans are murdered each year due to illegal immigration. I read one time, and i don't know if it's accurate or not, that there have been more Americans killed by illegal immigrants than in the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Illegal immigrants that hold American jobs....STILL, still don't pay any income tax yet there are how many MILLIONS of Americans out of work? It's sickening to see so many losing their homes, jobs and lives while you look around you and see illegals wandering around freely pulling wads of cash out of their pockets, still going to work everyday and the federal government STILL doesn't get it. When are they going to wake up and start taking care of it's own citizens and deporting the trash that's ruining America?

Welcome d-lanzius! And your absolutely right regarding your assesment of this situation. These stories should be front and center in our MSM...but they aren't! In some cases, these stories are not even mentioned by our MSM! The execution of this brave Border Patrol agent is indicitive of the violence which is breaching that border on a daily basis. Most times however, there are no heroic Border Patrol officers to apprehend or wage battle with these enemies. They simply walk across that border unscathed.

And once they reach our cities, so called elected officials are ready to welcome them with their disgusting sanctuary policies and overall do nothing approach to combate these criminals. For the most part, they are home free if they can make it across the border.

Even our own so called Homeland Security is doing everything in their power to make life more comfortable for illegal invaders. Detestable!

This results in American citizens being forced to tolerate living amongst those who would be willing to execute a law enforcement officer, all because our government would rather play politics with that border and those who cross it illegally.

In any event, our government is a disgrace, completely failing those whom they have sworn to protect. Their continued reluctance to secure that border and enforce existing immigration law is resulting in American casualties on a daily basis.

I long for the day when our government considers the lives of American citizens more important than illegal invaders and their so called dreams of a better life!

This will only get worse! Our govt. cares more about giving amnesty & taxpayer benefits to illegals than to our own citizens! Are you aware that these illegals get free healthcare, Social Security, Welfare & all that goes with it? An amendment was submitted by the Senate to put Congress & the W.H. on this awful healthcare bill, as well as to omit the care for illegal immigrants? The House REJECTED being included (they want to keep their own health care, which is excellent), but they REFUSED to omit care for illegals! Yes, that is where U.S. citizens stand BELOW ILLEGAL ALIENS! When Janet Napolitano made that statement about our soldiers fighting in Iraq & Afghanistan coming back & joining right-wing terrorist orgs., I was livid! My husband was an Army officer & she desecrated every one of our military with that statement. Our border agents are in a war closer to home & deserve every support & respect we can give them. This admin. is not serving in the best interest of our citizens. It wants unchecked POWER!
