    Colorado Activism

Thank you all ALIPAC activists for your help in Colorado! EVERY effort (e-mail, calls, face to face) is ALWAYS appreciated! I'm with the others who have voiced their concerns about people not appreciating even the most base efforts. I can't make phone calls either, and for those of you who can FANTASTIC I personally appreciate your extra effort! But the reality is that most of us do not have the time or money to make phone calls. For those of us who can only e-mail we are just as effective in the effort and just as important to the efforts as any one of you on the phone, so give us a break okay. Some of us STILL have jobs, we want to keep them while they last. I for one put all the time and attention that I can spare to fighting illegal immigration. Being at ground 0 (LA CA) I have a close and personal vestment in this activism, as I sure most of you do, but please don't ask people to do what they cannot, it's unfair, to all of us. We NEED to be united in this fight or we lose.

On the topic of discussion I e-mailed every senator on the list, and so far I got 7 replies. Those definately in our corner are: Supporters of the cause; Keith King Senate District 12, Mark Scheffel, Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry of Grand Junction, Ted Harvey State Senator Douglas County, Senator Mike Kopp District 22 Minority Caucus Chair. Our opponents are Senator Paula E. Sandoval District 34, and Senator Jennifer Veiga. Of those who did reply the score is 5-2 in our favor. Let's hope this is indicative of how the vote on the senate floor will go.

    Always yours in the fight!

Great work team! You all deserve a great round of applause!

We have other battles we must move on quickly, but please savor your hard earned victories like in Arkansas, New Jersey, and now Colorado.

    GREAT News from Colorado!

I got the word from 4 senators today informing of the final outcome of the senate vote today. Here they are:

I have good news for you on Senate Bill 170 - the Senate voted 18-16 to kill it this afternoon after nearly five hours of debate.

I cast my vote against this deeply flawed measure, along with all my Republican colleagues and four brave Democrats: Carrol, Keller, Newell, and Tochtrop. Although this deeply misguided measure will likely resurface in future years, I am encouraged by the fact that the will of the public prevailed.

Thank you for your vigilance on this issue – the number of e-mails and phone calls the Senate has received about SB 170 has been overwhelming. On a close vote, public input can make all the difference. Do not hesitate to contact me in the future with any questions or concerns: 303-866-4881.

    Sincerely,

    Ted Harvey
    State Senator, Douglas County

Together we did it. Today we defeated SB 170—the in-state tuition for illegal immigrants bill. We couldn’t have done it without your support. Thank you!

Thanks for writing me regarding SB 170.

As you may know, the bill was defeated by a strong bipartisan group of
legislators who believe in the rule of law.

Attached is a clip of my remarks during the floor debate.

    Thanks for writing,

    Josh

Got this email from CAIR , more dirty tricks on the way!

In State Tuition for Illegals Still at Risk

Thank you for all your efforts to stop this Mini-Amnesty. Our watchdogs are keeping tabs on this warning:

The bill is dead for the year, but the issue may not be

"Democratic Sen. Chris Romer, who sponsored the bill, said Colorado is one of three states that won't be able to offer in-state tuition to its illegal immigrant students even if Congress passes the DREAM Act, which stands for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors. The federal measure would allow illegal immigrants enrolled in college to become legal residents.

But a bill passed with bipartisan support during Colorado's 2006 special legislative session on illegal immigration bars giving state benefits to illegal immigrants with limited exceptions, such as emergency medical care.

Romer said other bills pending in the Legislature could be amended to prevent that 2006 law from stopping the state from offering in-state tuition to illegal immigrants should the DREAM Act pass."

    *****

The following paragraph is what would allow the Federal Dream Act to be applied in CO. This is part of the Amendment passed at the Appropriations Committee hearing, but that ultimately failed with 170 on the Senate floor:

24-76.5-103. Verification of lawful presence - exceptions -
reporting - rules. (3) Verification of lawful presence in the United
    States shall not be required:
    (h) FOR PERSONS DESCRIBED IN SECTION 23-7-110, C.R.S., WHO ARE CLASSIFIED AS IN-STATE STUDENTS FOR TUITION PURPOSES SOLELY PURSUANT TO SAID SECTION.".
