Gallegly accuses Obama of 'back-door amnesty' policy
By Mike Harris
Posted August 26, 2011 at 5:41 p.m.
Rep. Elton Gallegly, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement, has sent a letter to President Barack Obama calling a new administration policy "a backdoor amnesty" program for undocumented workers.
"As someone who has worked on this issue for more than 20 years, I cannot sit back and not express my extremely strong disapproval with your new policy," Gallegly, R-Simi Valley, stated in the letter released by his office Friday. "I urge you to reverse this policy."
Sent to the White House on Tuesday, Gallegly's letter echoes similar criticisms by other Republicans, including Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer.
The administration announced Aug. 18 it will allow low-priority undocumented immigrants facing deportation the chance to stay in the United States and apply for a work permit, while focusing on deporting undocumented workers who are convicted criminals and potential national security or public safety threats.
The new policy will entail a case-by-case review of about 300,000 undocumented immigrants facing possible deportation in federal immigration courts, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said.
Gallegly's letter accused the administration of "in effect ... implementing a backdoor amnesty for people who are violating federal immigration laws."
Gallegly argued the new policy "is a direct assault on the 14 million Americans and legal immigrants who are looking for a job to support themselves and their families. It will result in higher unemployment and lower wages and benefits for many Americans, especially, but not limited to, those in the minority community."
An administration spokesman could not be reached Friday for comment. But Cecilia Munoz, White House director of intergovernmental affairs, defended the new policy on the White House blog.
"There are more than 10 million people who are in the U.S. illegally; it's clear that we can't deport such a large number," she wrote. "So the administration has developed a strategy to make sure we use those resources in a way that puts public safety and national security first."
The policy, she wrote, will focus deportation efforts on "people who have been convicted of crimes in the United States," rather than "people who are low priorities for deportation," such as young people brought here as small children.

Mitt Romney just moved up to a C - on numbersUSA. Not that a C - is good.
Ron Paul in 2011 "[...]no amnesty should be granted. Maybe a 'green card' with an asterisk should be issued[...]a much better option than deportation."

Have we learned nothing from the last election ? Wake up people these people are professional liars. They will say and do anything neccesary to get elected. Looking more and more like Ron Paul is the only one of the bunch that is honest, Hopefully Bachmann can be included in that. The GOP cannot be trusted. Period.

I am very happy the public is becoming more and more aware of Ron Paul's anti-Americanism. He should never hold the office of the President in the United States.Ron Paul in 2011 "[...]no amnesty should be granted.
