Why Reed Prior..... now we know, another doper

Bush also commuted the prison sentence of Reed Raymond Prior of Des Moines, Iowa.

Prior was convicted of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. He was sentenced in 1996 in the Southern District of Iowa to life in prison with 10 years of supervised release. His prison sentence is now set to expire on Feb. 23, 2009, but the terms of the commutation leave intact and in effect the 10 years of supervised release with all its conditions.

Well-known names were not on Bush's holiday pardon list. There have been pushes to get Bush to pardon former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards, who was convicted in 2000 with four others in a scheme to rig riverboat casino licensing; disgraced track star Marion Jones, who lied about using steroids; Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, former U.S. Border Patrol agents who were convicted of shooting a drug smuggler in 2005 and trying to cover it up; and Michael Milken, junk bond king who was convicted of securities fraud.

Michael Milken, junk bond king who was convicted of securities fraud.
As a peon at Drexel Burnham Lambert during his rule, his shenanigans gave me a Christmas bonus of 13 weeks pay, though I had only been there two years. His scam was getting about 16 of his buddies (Meshulam Riklis, husband of the "fabulous actress and singer" Pia Zadora, head of Rapid American Corp. is the only one that comes to mind) bid up each others bonds before getting them on the open market. It was nothing more than a pump and dump scheme in the bond market.
Since then Milken has not touched the markets (that we know of) and has become a born-again Christian who preaches against sin according to a TV story a few years ago. I just wonder if he knows the difference between real sin which should also include financial sin.

IMO, the President of the United States shouldn't have the power to pardon anyone that has been found guilty and sentenced in a court of law.

The President need not provide a reason for a pardon, and the courts and the Congress have no legal authority to approve, disapprove, reject, or accept a pardon. The President can pardon anyone guilty of a federal crime. Heck, Bill Clinton pardoned his own brother Roger. Moreover, President Gerald Ford, for example, pardoned Richard Nixon before Nixon was ever charged with, let alone convicted, of any crime. Where's the justice in allowing a President to pardon a family member or a former President? I'm sorry, this is one point where I disagree with the framers of the U.S. Constitution. IMO, no one man should have the power to pardon someone judged as guilty by a jury of his or her peers. The judicial system provides other avenues for redress.

To the framers of the U.S. Constitution, the power to pardon, familiar as a power of the King of England, was necessary because the way the law was applied. In England, it was common for minor offenses to carry a sentence of death, with pardon by the King being the only way to avoid the punishment. The possibility of such a situation no longer exist here in the United States. Folks in this country are no longer given death sentences for crimes considered minor in nature. Therefore, the power to pardon should no longer exist. Just my opinion, for what it's worth.

Ramos and Compean tried to stop a drug dealer and Bush won't pardon them, but he will pardon a drug dealer. The United States has 5% of the world's population, yet TWO-THIRDS of the world's illegal drugs are right here. That tells me Bush WANTS illegal drugs in our country to poison our children......And Bush says he's a good Christian????

I don't have anything good to say about Bush and I voted for him both times. Bush didn't get outraged over the ACLU's tenacious attack on Christianity, abortions or anything else conservative. In fact, Bush stayed away from those issues to appease Democrats so they would side with him on aiding and abetting identity theives, job theives, rapists, drug dealers and other assorted third world pirates invading our country.
