For whatever good it might do, I'm listing below the link to the social security death database on the LDS Church website. You can search by name as well as social security number.
If anyone has a number they suspect is being used improperly the site can be searched to see if the person is deceased.
Let me give this caveat: The database is not all inclusive. My understanding is that it includes only those persons who received a death benefit from social security or were receiving a social security payment at the time of their death.
I have used the database extensively for genealogy and have found probably 90% of the names I've searched.
