I know some people think that illegal aliens should join the US military to make it up to us for breaking into our country, but from what I have seen and heard the idea of training illegals to use military hardware and tactics is a big mistake since so many of them hate our guts and hate America.

It's the law? What a joke! The law is broken the minute they slither into this country! After 26 is 'too late' to register? Why is that? What are they going to do, deport them?
Isn't our military being touted as America's finest? The brave men (what no women?) of the our armed forces? This must a very sick episode of the twilight zone!!!

The US military has recruited illegal aliens for as long as I remember. I don't know what will happen if they re-instate selective service and just start grabbing them up off the streets and fit them for uniforms.

In the 1960's and 1970's the illegals who joined up did it to get US citizenship. I know quite a few people who actually came by their citizenship in that manner and who are just as upset by the current cast of border jumpers as we are. The point is that those guys came by their citizenship legally and are good citizens. I know one former soldier personally and I know of others who came by their citizenship for enlisting to fight in the first Gulf War. The line gets blurred these days as to how many of these soldiers of Hispanic descent are legal and how many are illegal in this area.

But a lot of illegals don't seem to WANT US citizenship these days so I don't know if that carrot is going attract any takers. In fact, around here, the illegals as well as the legal citizens of hispanic background are complaining bitterly that Bush is doing the wrong thing by sending more. The recruiters are singing the blues because the parents are discouraging their kids from joining the military. Gee, I wonder why they would do that? Recruiters hang around the high schools and colleges regularly and show up to set up tables at craft shows. dozens of times a day there is a commercial depicting some kid who looks like a punk rocker or a gangster telling their parents they are going to join the military because of all the great things it can do for them. It is really sickening! I notice they got off the kick of promoting the military to girls, though.

But if Bush is going to send people to Iraq to get slaughtered, I'd rather they send ALL the illegal aliens than one American citizen. I'm sick and tired of this damn war. In this town, flags are flown at half staff every single day lately! Every single day another soldier or two from Ft. Bliss (and, yes I know it isn't the only place) is murdered by some suicide bomber while the borders remain wide open in this country and potential mid east terrorists fly into the airports and roost like vultures on our land.

It just makes you want to cry to know how many American service men (and women) are being slaughtered while hundreds of illegal aliens who are laid off from the jobs they came to steal sit on their asses in the comfort of homes that someone else is paying for!

One section of this town has an elementary school overflowing with Arab kids whose mothers run around in Arab garb to make sure we all know they are here. I can't help but wonder how many of them are here on overstayed visas and how many more of them there are whose kids are going to private schools on the sidelines where they teach them to be little terrorists while the public schools teach the Mexican kids "Reconquista!

To my knowledge the military does not recruit, nor does it enlist illegal immigrants. Please don't demean our military services or our country by suggesting such without supporting documentation. As a former Navy Officer Recruiter (4 years) and OIC of a military enlistment records processing division, I find what you're suggesting extremely offensive!

We have Mexican friends who have worked with my husband for thirty years or more who came by their US citizenship in exchange for their service in the US Military. These people were born in Mexico and were living on this side of the border illegally when they enlisted.

And there is a younger guy who kitty corner across the street from me with the same status.

They have shipboard and on-base ceremonies regularly to allow the "new citizens" to take the oath of citizenship.

That is proof enough for me and it it isn't for you, I'm sorry.

I'm not a lawyer (THANK GOD) but it would seem to me that this would put selective service at odds with US law. Am I missing something here??? If some illegal immigrant actually registers then shouldn't ICE be on to them like white on rice? How can US law state that it is illegal for them to be here and yet encourage them to register so they don't miss out on any benefits?????

The law says that if a male over the age of 18 is living in the USA, they MUST register for selective service. How would that be at odds? They are over 18. They live here. How much simpler can it get?

And ICE doesn't seem to give a darn whose here or why so I'm sure they aren't going to worry about people who are registering for the draft.

I'm not going to get into an argument with you on this, but I do believe you're confusing perception with fact. Non-citizens can enlist in the U.S. Military, but they must be Permanent Resident Aliens (Green Card holders). Illegal immigrants are not authorized to enlist in the U.S. Military. Furthermore, non-citizens can only serve in an enlisted capacity and they must become Naturalized U.S. Citizens to meet eligibility for reenlistment.

Yes, as I said, naturalization is required for reenlistment eligibility. Moreover, I believe 12 months of active duty now qualifies a resident to become a citizen (rule change during Iraq War). The folks you're referring to were legal residents of this country when they enlisted.

My problem with this is that Selective Service makes a special effort to address the illegals. I don't want them getting a damnn thing except a one way trip back across the border. I grew up as a military brat all over this planet and then spent 10 years on active duty. I would never want to serve alongside an illegal alien. PERIOD. How can I trust them to follow orders when they cannot even follow the LAW??????

PHOENIX – Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who gained notoriety for putting inmates on chain gangs and issuing them striped uniforms and pink underwear, has now ordered all illegal aliens in jail to register for the draft.
About 500 illegal aliens housed in the Phoenix-area county's jail system have not complied with a 1980 federal law that requires all men between the ages of 18 and 26 to register for the draft, regardless of their immigration status, Arpaio said.

"I can't say that I've ever heard anything like this, but we do appreciate any effort toward compliance," said Dan Amon, a spokesman for the Selective Service System in Washington, D.C.

He said Arpaio might be doing the illegal aliens a favor by ordering them to register, because Selective Service is tied to a number of benefits, including citizenship.

If they want to legalize their immigration status, the first thing they would be asked is whether they are registered for the draft, Amon said.
