Senator: Immigration Bill Unlikely in '06

CAPITOL HILL -- One of Capitol Hill's fiercest opponents of what he calls an immigrant "amnesty" says, "The Senate should be ashamed of itself."
Republican Senator Jeff Sessions says a filibuster is unlikely, so a plan to rewrite U-S immigration law will probably pass the Senate next week. But the Alabama Republican also predicts a compromise measure with the House isn't likely to make it off Capitol Hill this year.
The House bill is largely a get-tough enforcement package that would make being or hiring an illegal immigrant a felony. The Senate bill calls for heightened border controls, a new guest worker program and a shot at eventual citizenship for (m) millions of illegal immigrants.
