STOP Taxpayer Funding of Obamacare Translators in 180 Languages!

STOP taxpayer funding of Obamacare translators in 180 languages!
October 8, 2013

Last week, the new Obamacare exchanges opened for enrollment all across the nation. During a TV interview on MSNBC, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius—who is responsible for implementing the new health law—openly admitted that interpreters in 150 different languages would be on hand at the 24/7 call centers to ensure that non-English speakers understand how to enroll in the program.

SEBELIUS: “There’s also a call center […] People can call on the phone. And we have translators available in up to 150 languages to answer questions, help people understand some of the terminology.”

The White House had originally announced plans to provide translations in conjunction with the opening of the Obamacare exchanges over the summer. However, the notice HHS posted in August listed exactly 180foreign languages that had to be accommodated for both the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) Services 24/7 contact center as well as CMS’ Health Insurance Marketplace call center.

There is no reason that taxpayers should be funding expensive translations in 180 languages to coax non-English speakers to enroll in a new entitlement program!

Not only that, but an estimated 36 million U.S. residents reported speaking Spanish as their primary language in 2011. The number of U.S. residents who speak the other 179 languages is miniscule compared to the number of English and Spanish speakers, so why is the government wasting hard-earned taxpayer dollars to translate almost 200 rarely spoken languages?
