Ted Cruz Ad Shows Horde of Business Professionals Crossing The Border Illegally

A new television ad from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) shows a bunch of professionals in business attire crossing the U.S. border with Mexico illegally, purportedly showing them coming into America to take jobs away from America’s elite.

“I understand that when the mainstream media covers immigration, it doesn’t often see it as an economic issue,” Cruz says, using audio from the mid-November debate in Milwaukee where he made this point, in the ad.

But, I can tell you for millions — of Americans at home watching this, it is a very personal economic issue. And, I will say the politics of it will be very, very different if a bunch of lawyers or bankers were crossing the Rio Grande. Or if a bunch of people with journalism degrees were coming over and driving down the wages in the press. Then, we would see stories about the economic calamity that is befalling our nation.

The ad then cuts to a split-screen of him versus the non-conservative pro-amnesty Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who’s become for now the establishment GOP frontrunner replacing his mentor former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush for that role.

“If I’m elected president, we will triple the border patrol. We will build a wall that works. We will secure the border,” Cruz says, drawing a contrast with Rubio—the former “Gang of Eight” amnesty pitchman for Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

Rubio famously worked alongside not just Schumer but also the now-indicted Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Sens. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) as well as Sens. Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on the amnesty bill.

Cruz, meanwhile, worked against the amnesty bill that Rubio served as Schumer’s pitchman for—fighting it alongside Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), eventually defeating Rubio’s amnesty plan.

Interesting & appreciated - Mr Trump has inspired & emboldened him.

Too bad he didn't relate it to quadrupling STEM workers with H1-b foreign worker visas which he was/is for- (not sure at this point).

He actually introduced a bill that would increase H1B visas by 500% and that would double the green cards issued per year from 675,000 to 1.3 million. Last year in 2015, the US legally admitted 3 million new immigrants, so I'm sure Mr. Cruz's handi-work was involved. There is no tape or video that I can find where he opposed the increases.

Ted Cruz is very dishonest on immigration and trade issues. Not sure why people are falling for it, because it's so clear.

Cruz's past support for tripling legal immigration was the biggest beef I had against him. However, he has now changed his position on that.

As for Trump inspiring him. I'm not so sure that is true. Cruz has wanted a wall across Texas since 2012. He has also supported tripling the number of border patrol agents since then too.

Cruz wanted a "fence", the little fence that Trump makes fun of. It's in his testimony in 2013 on an amendment to the Gang of Eight bill what he wanted, the fence that any illegal aliens can cut through or climb over.

Lying at a Debate in front of 18 million people less than a month ago because Rubio exposed him for his long-standing support of legalization, is not changing your mind in my book. It's lying to the American People to try to stay in a race for President.

How Ted Cruz's new immigration ad trumps Trump's

The ad’s careful construction may be yet more proof that Sen. Ted Cruz is attempting to slipstream behind Donald Trump while snatching some of his voters

    By Peter Grier

Ted Cruz has released a new immigration-themed ad that’s as hard-hitting, in its own way, as Donald Trump’s recent sledgehammer of a spot. But Senator Cruz’s effort is perhaps cleverer – making it seem more restrained than his bombastic rival’s.

The Cruz ad starts with what one critic labels a thought experiment: What if illegal immigrants were predominantly white collar instead of laborers and other lower-skilled workers?

And that’s what it depicts. With tension-raising drumbeats sounding in the background, a bunch of well-dressed executive types wade through water and race across a stubby field in slow motion. The acting and cinematography are excellent. A woman pausing to pour water out of her high heel is a particularly nice touch.

Meanwhile, you hear Cruz speaking. The mainstream media don’t cover immigration as an economic issue, he says, but it is an economic issue, and a "very personal" one at that.

“And I can tell you that the politics of it would be very, very different if a bunch of lawyers or bankers were crossing the Rio Grande,” Cruz says. “Or if a bunch of people with journalism degrees were coming over and driving down the wages in the press.”

At this point in the narration, a desperate fleeing refugee drops her laptop, but a colleague in a bespoke suit urges her on. He seems to be saying, never mind the MacBook Air! Keep running! MSNBC will give you a new one!

“Then we would see stories about the economic calamity befalling our nation,” says the unseen Cruz.

The rest of the spot is Cruz saying that as president, he will secure the border, accompanied by a shot of Marco Rubio – who trails Cruz in Iowa but is edging him out for No. 2 in New Hampshire – looking nervous. Then “Trust” and “Ted” morph to create “TrusTed” on-screen.

The ad’s construction may be yet more proof that Cruz is attempting to slipstream behind Mr. Trump while snatching some of his voters. It combines two issues that are of great importance to the predominantly less-educated, lower-income core of Trump’s vote: economic insecurity, and immigration.

Plus, it slams the media, lawyers, and bankers – unpopular professions all. No mention of doctors or tech entrepreneurs racing across the Rio Grande, we notice.

Critics say Cruz’s assumptions here are bogus, however. Writing in Vox, Matthew Yglesias says it is “simply false to say that the current rate of immigration to the United States is an economic calamity.” Research shows that incomes of native-born Americans are higher, not lower, due to the economic activity generated by immigration, according to Mr. Yglesias.

But focusing on the economics of illegal immigration is less inflammatory than simply calling many Mexican immigrants rapists, as Trump has done. In that sense, Cruz’s approach is softer.

Plus, the ad just looks good. At least, that’s what the right-leaning Erick Erickson argues at his new website, The Resurgent.

Mr. Erickson says he’s heard people say Cruz’s spot offends them and that it misstates the issue. But those folks are missing the point: The Texas senator has produced “the most professionally polished, sharp ad of the season,” in Erickson’s view.

That means it could make a difference at a critical moment in the campaign.

“Whether you like it or not, I assure you it is going to stand out from a crowded field of ads in Iowa and southern states with both the image and message,” according to Erickson.

Ted Cruz knocks mainstream media over immigration in new ad

By Seth McLaughlin - The Washington Times - Tuesday, January 5, 2016

GOP presidential contender Ted Cruz took aim at the “mainstream media” Tuesday by charging in a new television ad that it would see the issue of illegal immigration through a different prism if a herd of lawyers, bankers and journalists were charging across the U.S.-Mexico border.

The new “invasion” ad depicts a swarm of women in high heels, and men in black suits and ties, with some carrying briefcases atop their heads, others struggling to hang onto their laptop computers, sprinting across a desert and clumsily wading across a river.

“I understand that when the mainstream media covers immigration, it doesn’t often see it as an economic issue, but I can tell you, it is a very personal economic issue,” Mr. Cruz says in the ad, replaying comments he made on a debate stage earlier this year. “And I will say the politics of it would be very, very, different if a bunch of lawyers or bankers were crossing the Rio Grande, or if a bunch of people with journalism degrees were coming over and driving down the wages in the press then we would see stories about the economic calamity that is befallen our nation.”

The Cruz campaign said the 30-second ad would run statewide in New Hampshire beginning Tuesday.

Mr. Cruz has taken a hard-line stance on immigration, vowing to take a strict stand against both legal and illegal immigration. He has promised to enforce laws on the books and shifted on the issue of legal immigration, saying he no longer supports the massive increases that he once did.

And it should be noted that Cruz is a lawyer married to a Goldman-Sachs banker and they both worked for the GW Bush Administration.

I can't think of a worse combination to lead our nation.

Shifted .... yeah, he's shifty alright. No longer supports massive increases that he once did. Yeah?

Since when? Oh yeah, since the 5th GOP Debate on December 15 when he was corned by Rubio. Three weeks ago. He's like every other politician, lie, get the job and then stick it to 'em.

Tricky Ted. "Cagey" Cruz. Mr. "Wiggle Roomer Slippery Weasel."

We've got plenty of those in the US Congress. We don't need to elect one of 'em to the White House.
