Thread: Are They Leaving?

One of Houston's largest nurseries chains is Houston Garden Center. For years every time we have gone to any of them we had to speak Spanish to get anything. Very few of the employees there spoke English and I have little doubt that most of them were illegal. Today I went to get some potting soil and they had a huge help wanted sign up on the fence for the first time I can ever remember. When they loaded the soil into my SUV the guy actually spoke English. Can it be that with all the heat ICE has been putting on local businesses this one finally chose to clean up and get rid of the illegals?

Whoot! Lets hope so. Maybe there will a few less jobless Americans in your area.

My question to you is, why give any business your money that doesn't/didn't have English speaking employees?

Not only would it be annoying, but giving them your $$$ is feeding into the non-assimilation problems, IMHO. Of course where you shop is entirely up to you, but just curious.

Our local Burger King now has drive through employees that speak English. And not just "watchoo wan?" Here's hoping.

Those 2 words/sounds (?) are more than most fast food employees speak in my area. The majority only knew the # of the menu item. OF COURSE I HAVENT GONE TO A FAST FOOD CRAP HOLE IN OVER A YEAR. Lets hope things are changing!

I went grocery shopping today in So Cal and everyone working in this store, besides the manager and asst manager were hispanic. I approached the service deli and interrupted a conversation between three employees as they blathered away in spanish. I caught another employee out of the corner of my, with his back turned towards (he didn't think anyone could see him) me, stuffing his face with something as be worked on some sort of pastry (they wonder why people are getting sick). The only thing I could think of is whether or not those employees had used fradulent social security numbers to get that job.

I was going to speak with the store manager and remind him that it's perceived as rude when customers have to listen to store employees speak in a foreign language while on duty. However, I just wasn't in the mood today to argue, which is often how these situations end up because of the vast ignorance on the part of those who hire these people.
