The other thing I forgot to mention was that one day, on the "free" list in Craigslist (Portlanders give away all sorts of stuff, so we peruse this for either needed furniture, or things for others we know), and there was a free ad for a car.

Now I meant to copy the ad, as it was classic. This person was giving away this funky car whichdid run, because typed in broken English, he/she said they were going back to Mexico and it had to be gone from the property.

As well, I have just seen a lot less out and about lately, along with what the neighbor kid told us. I do think that some may try to hang on, but in the long run, it seems some are choosing to get out while the gettin's good !

Glad to hear others are seeing it too. It sounds like OK is about the best place to so far as that goes, for Americans, almost makes me want to live there (but then who would look out for my pet sasquatch? ).

I've noticed that glare a number of times, too. I'm just hoping I myself won't get the stoop shouldered look of dejection as our economy comes tumbling down and there are few construction jobs to be had. This country has gone on a feeding frenzy of building--and of course hiring illegals--and it is likely to go into an equally exaggerated bust cycle. I saw a report on CNN about Florida condos being auctioned off at 50% of asking price.

Captainron, I understand that one. My brother used to have his own gas installation and maintenance business (as in fireplaces, lines, furnaces and such) and it has just been one thing after another for him, now he is working for another guy. He said there has been a loss of construction jobs across the table and all too many of the contractors want cheap workers. It really hurts.

Here is what I am seeing here. Shopping has gone way down. I see at least a 60% decrease in the locals in my complex bringing in bags of stuff and even food. I see almost no newer/different cars rolling in and certainly times appear to be quite lean, with MANY of the men simply at home (no jobs?).

Most recently, we have had some take off from their units in the middle of the night and leave ALL of their belongings behind, including food and clothing.

I do think Christmas will tell me how things really are, although I beleive many still will raid the local charities as I saw them do last year (saw them rolling in with many bags and boxes of food and toys from them, most marked obviously on the outside), as well as their own massive shopping at Walmart and K-Mart. If we do not see too much activity, it could be telling us that there is less expendable income and jobs might just be drying up for them.

Let's all keep tabs locally. What I am seeing right now tells me we are heading in the right direction. Tell me all, what you are noticing across OUR nation?
Since the McDonald raids I am seeing less of them ever where I go. I hope they are leaving the state or even better the country.

In July '07 my town applied for 287g. We have seen some changes since then for sure. A Taqueria near me has closed. And this store, whose picture I've posted numerous times here! has been closed for a couple of weeks. Today I saw a red sign on the front door saying "Not fit for inhabitation." I can only imagine what's going on in there.

Waukegan is, or was? 70% Hispanic.

We have MANY homes for sale as well.

    Mkfrnam,

Wow, I'd be very interested to hear what you have read. Please post or pm me.

We do have a new bilingual director and she reported this last night at the board meeting the two paragraphs below. -the video of her statement will be posted later on youtube. It's scandalous. Our new school board says they want students exited out in 1 to 3 years. We'll see! I speak to my kid's bilingual classed friends -their English is just fine?!

We were warned that test scores are going to go down because the bilingual students can no longer take the IMAGE test in place of regular standardized tests. She also said that not a single 5th-grader was exited from the program last year, because the former administrator did not believe in exiting them. 14% of bilingual students have been in the bilingual program for 6 years or longer (and that does NOT count kindergarten or pre-K). There's more, but those are some of the highlights that I can remember off the top of my head. I will have this video up later this evening.

You are also correct-The current administration should be very ashamed that our bilingual students can not compete with nonbilingual students in the state and take the ISAT. Last year they gave the IMAGE test to many students who had not ever been in bilingual or who had exited many years before to inflate the scores and make the superintendent look good. I would like to know whose decision that was-Now they have to pay the piper and they will be running scared. Waukegan is going to score at the bottom of the state lists. Using the excuse that the kids can't take the IMAGE this year should not be an excuse at all. There are principals who purposely kept kids in bilingual programs so the kids could take the IMAGE test to make the school's scores look higher. Why do you think kids never exit the bilingual program?
