Brownback says his stance on immigration could hurt him politically

Sen. Sam Brownback said today that his stance on immigration reform has hurt his potential bid for a presidential nomination.

Brownback said his support of a guest worker program has drawn fire from a broad group of people.

"For a lot of people, they thought this was not the right way to go," he said after giving a Washington update to about 150 Wichita business leaders at a Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

But Brownback, who said he has still not made a decision about running for president in 2008, maintained that his opinion on immigration reform has been long-standing and that the American economy needs millions of immigrant workers who often cross the border illegally.
