Immigration agents arrest illegal workers at Woodfin plant

    Josh Boatwright and John Boyle

Agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement this morning raided a Woodfin manufacturing plant, arresting 57 people on charges related to immigration violations.

The workers used fraudulent documents to get jobs at Mills Manufacturing Corp., a government defense contractor that makes parachutes, special agent Del Richburg said. He called the raid the largest ever in Western North Carolina.

The company is not the target of the investigation and has been cooperative, the agency said. Company officials did not know the workers were illegal, Richburg said.

The workers apprehended were being bused to the Henderson County Detention Center. Some will be taken back to the plant in Woodfin under order to appear later in an immigration court, he said.
The majority of the workers arrested are from Mexico. Some also are from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Ecuador, Richburg said.

Homeland security concerns, with Mills Manufacturing being a defense contractor, was a driving factor in the raid, he said.

John Oswald, executive vice president and chief executive officer of Mills Manufacturing, said his company was unaware of the improperly documented workers. The company checks all employees’ documents, which typically include driver’s licenses, Social Security cards or Green Cards, but it does not have experts who can detect sophisticated forgeries.
Employers have to walk a fine line “between discriminating and making sure we get documented empoloyees,â€

Mr. Oswald is a LIAR no doubt about it.He knows about E-Verify but did not use it.I am sick of employers getting off because they are good liars !! E-Verify must be made MANDATORY because some employers are greedy crooks.

Immigration Raid Nets Defense Contractor's Workers

    POSTED: 10:50 am EDT August 12, 2008
    UPDATED: 12:47 pm EDT August 12, 2008

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Federal officials have taken nearly 60 employees of an Asheville company into custody as part of an operation to arrest suspected illegal immigrants.

The 57 people are employees of Mills Manufacturing Corporation, a government contractor that makes parachutes for the U.S. military.

U.S.Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Ivan L. Ortiz-Delgado said that arrests are part of a targeted investigation.

Ortiz-Delgado said that Mills Manufacturing is not a target of the investigation and has been fully cooperative. The 59 workers who have been detained are out of a total company workforce of 160, Ortiz-Delgado said.

In all the case so far, the workers detained used fraudulent documents, ICE officials said.

Most of the people detained are from Mexico, but others are from Guatemala, Ecuador, Honduras and El Salvador.

About half of the people detained were released for humanitarian reasons, ICE said. Those reason include child care and medical situations.

The rest are being held at the Henderson County Detention Center. The county has a an agreement with ICE to process and hold people accused of immigration violations.
